Fascinating little wine! Deeper colour for sure but less on the nose to suggest the extra skin contact but I think the Gewurtztraminer character is powering on through. But when you first open it does have a dry mid palette from the tannin which eases once it’s opened for an hour.

Really want to try this with a few spicy dishes or cheese.

The Vin de France Blanc “Centenaire” is crafted from Chenin Blanc grapes, grown on 6.5 hectares of old vines using biodynamic methods by Alice and Antoine Pouponneau in the village of Le Thoureil. The wine undergoes whole cluster pressing, malolactic fermentation, and is aged for 18 months in 228L barrels, with 1/3 of the barrels being new oak. This results in a wine with exceptional texture, refinement, and a pure expression of the grape.

Wow! Looking great, these are our last few bottles and we thought we would revisit …

It’s gained a little more weight in the bottle and classic Pinot Gris aroma and character, brilliance and understated and absolute cracker!

It’s a Fiasco :) great little lunch time wine that has a playful gnod to Chianti of the 1980’s. It’s not simple by any means but very drinkable fresh and satisfying. Also in a handy litre for sociable drinking. It’s named after the classic flask whicker bottle Chianti is famous for. It’s made from Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Malvasia Nera, Colorino sourced from all over Italy.

We also have their Classico which is much more serious but we have a real soft spot for this…

2022 Domaine Grange Saint-Sauveur Le Martray

The Vin de France Rouge “Le Martray” is a blend of 40% Grolleau Noir, 40% Gamay, 20% Pineau d’Aunis. 48 hour partial carbonic maceration, élevage for 8 months in demi-muids.

France is seeing a lot of natural wines and these are an excellent example.

End of week treat!

This is a sensational Sherry!!! and is made from a very special vineyard “Miraflores” which is close to the sea and from vines over 50 years old. Sherry is rarely made this way. Grapes closer to the ocean have more elegance and freshness. They also pick up plenty of salinity and aging in Sanlucar only adds to this salinity.

This is so concentrated, rich with complexity but dry nutty and razor sharp acidity. The flavour just runs and runs and you will still taste this long after swallowing. It really is heavenly stuff.

Azienda Agricola Reverdito…

Nascetta (a rare, indigenous Piemontese varietal) has sone of the minerality of a Pouilly-Fumé without any of that overt greenness but with delicious hints of white flowers instead. It’s powerful stuff, indeed 14% so hearty stuff but will be great with something like Vitello Tonnato.

Reverdito’s Verduno Pelaverga is made from Pelaverga piccolo grape. The wine has a pale red colour, almost a Rosato, and is light bodied with spicy notes of wild strawberries and pink peppercorn. This needs an hour or so in a decanter but very Pinot Noir. Lightly chilled this would be perfect with Vitello Tonnato.

Wow!

Just working on a South African old vine tasting and I always held back a few of gem’s for such a tasting. So we opened one to see how it was doing!!!!!

Sadie Family T’Voetpad (Die Ouwingerdreeks) 2013 - sensational balance, character and freshness. Second it poured a lovely light gold we knew it was in great form. Lovely freshness and minerality but layers of soft white fruits and tangerine some nuttiness. The wine has a lovely texture and creaminess (the wines always had richness I’ve found). We could have drunk a magnum with ease!!!! while drinking it at that moment I would not have swapped it for anything else.

A field blend Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris, Palomino, Chenin Blanc, and Muscat d’ Alexandrie and most of the vines were planted between 1900. - 1928 on their own rootstocks. The vineyard is in a hot valley North of Swartland, where vines would not grow but for an underground stream providing much needed water.

All these years in the wine trade and still you come across wines made from grapes we had not heard of let alone taste …. So step up this delightful, light, fruity wine is made from Genouillet grapes. Historically it covered 7,400 acres of the region of Issoudun in Centre-Loire. The variety nearly completely disappeared due to Phylloxera last century. It’s similar to Gamay with soft spicy notes and a nice acidity.

Was a lot of fun doing a wine pairing private event last night This was the venison loin which on its own was a great match with the Newton Johnson Pinot Noir but with the chard and venison we thought the Turley was the winner…. Always fascinating and both were delicious but interesting how a little change can alter perceptions.
