A lady from the council planning department called to the shop today, we are going to need planning permission for the new shop front, which is going to mean more of a delay while we assemble the required documents and drawings they are asking for. The form is also advising that we enquire if we need building regulations as well. This feels like more obstacles and hoops to jump through. On a positive note, the lady from the council has said once our paperwork lands in their office they are now aware of our situation and will do their very best to speed the process along. Watch this space for more information as we get it

Yet another update on the new shop front saga we are faced with. We are waiting on a simple yes or no response from the council as to whether or not planning permission is needed for the new shop front. I've rung several times to only be told each time that it can take up to 21 days for them to respond. I paid the £90 fee on the 8th of August and sent the form in the same day. They likely got it on the following Monday 12th. So far the only correspondance we've had is another receipt for the money sent, we got a receipt automatically when I paid online.

I've tried to engage our local MP Councillor Sam Cross to see if he could investigate on our behalf. That was last Sunday and thus far, I've had no response, not even an acknowledgement email.

This isn't a simple planning issue where we want to change something. This is a change that has been foisted on us out of necessity. We don't have any doors and the front window glass and frame are broken. Quite simply we just need a new shopfront so that we can re-open to trade.

We are still trying to trade from the rear entrance but trade is very spasmodic so we are still closing by midday each day.

The new shop front design has been drawn up, submitted to insurance who have ok'd it and submitted to council for their approval. We are waiting on the wheels of the council to turn a bit faster and give us the nod. Once that happens, we can place the order and then it's a 4 to 6 week lead time for the shopfront to be built. We are getting there, progress is being made albeit slowly. We should be open I would say, late September or early October.

Another reminder that we are still open each day until around 11am, sometimes a little later, especially at the weekend. The shop is fully functional, all aspects of the goods we offer are still here with the exception of the Pick and Mix sweets.

Access to the shop is via Chapel Street, our entry is opposite 13 Chapel Street, to the end through the gate, down the steps and round the corner. If the steps are too much for you, just shout from the gate, we can come out to you and get whatever it is you need.

We are insured for loss but not for the loss of goodwill and peoples' change of habits. Please don't forget us.

There is a plan to put 26 flat in the old Hylands Care Home. While this sounds a good idea, it will likely be more holiday lets. Nothing for the local community and lots and lots more cars in an already crowded Town.

If you feel strongly about this, please object to the proposal. I'll put a link to the council website where you can lodge an objection or approval if you think it's a good idea.

An update on what's happening with the shop. The loss adjuster is coming out on Tuesday so hopefully we will see some movement after that.

If anyone needs a weekend paper and is able bodied, we are open around the back of the shop. Access is via Chapel street, our entry is opposite 13 Chapel Street to the end gate and then down a couple of steps. We would love to see any of you, it's been a bit quiet here since we had to close.

The front of the shop is not safe for customers at the moment so we will remain closed for the time being.

We are closing at 11am each day but may stretch that a little on Saturday depending on footfall.

We will be making morning newspaper deliveries. The front of the shop is boarded up so there is no access to customers. If you have a shop save that you wish to pick up, pop round the back, we will be here until around 11am each day until further notice.

For those of you who haven't heard yet. A car has come through the front of our shop today. No one was injured thankfully.

The shop is not able to trade at the moment, we will endeavour to make morning paper deliveries from the back of the shop. Anyone having papers saved can come to the back door via Chapel Street to pick their paper up.

Not sure how long it will be like this.

The saga of the new phone system continues. We are unable to listen to any voicemails left by customers and the system is not fit for purpose as far as we can see. Ringing the call centre about it gets us nowhere. We will have another go over the weekend to try to sort this out and if we can't do it, we will set wheels in motion to put a different option in place that will work. Please bear with us, we feel as though we have been pressured into putting in a phone system that we neither needed or asked for just because they are turning off the analogue signal next year.

Our fridge has decided to break down today. We have an engineer booked for tomorrow morning between 8.00 am and 11.00 am

Unfortunately, I also have a hospital appointment tomorrow in Hull and have to be there before midday.

If the engineer comes more towards 11.00 am. We will have to temporarily close the shop to deal with the engineer.

Fingers crossed we're first in the queue and he manages to fix it.

The phone mast is still out of action. We have switched our phone line over to the digital signal at the back end of last year. This means that although we have a 'landline' number the phone is still reliant on the phone mast being on. Sorry for the inconvenience, it's beyond our control.

It's 7.20 and there are no papers in the shop. We have contacted Menzies and they say they are still in the depot. They say it's due to contractor issues. Not sure if we will even get papers today. Sorry for this, it's beyond our control.
