Here we have René Rostaing, 2014, Côte Rôtie, ‘Ampodium’ - an outstanding wine; medium bodied, classically styled and elegant. Lots of rich red and black fruits and toasted spice characteristics on both the nose and palate.

JULIEN SUNIER’S WINES, BACK IN STOCK!

If you’d like to get back into Beaujolais before Christmas, here is a great selection to begin with!

All natural wines which are pure and alive.
The use of chemical, synthetic fertilizer and herbicides are banished as Sunier prefers to stimulate the microbiological life with contributions of composted fertilizer. Soils are plowed and turned over at specific times throughout the growing season.

Sunier uses only natural yeast, minimal SO2 and rarely filters his wines, which are characterised by scintillating floral aromatics, great freshness, and a sense of place and energy. He is now well-established as one of the region’s star producers, part of a wave of talented, ambitious young winemakers (many of those dedicated to organic viticulture) who are today redefining how Beaujolais is perceived.

An elegant rich shade of violet and intensely aromatic. Wonderful aromas of freshly picked violets, zingy pomegranate, red cherries, blackberries and redcurrants mingle with richer notes of strawberry jam, fresh pine and potting soil

A medium-bodied palate, packed with an array of ripening red and black berries, nuances of new leather and marzipan. Tannins mellow after a few swirls in the glass and offer balance to all of the fruit with a black tea depth, and whilst the fruit components are as yet still a little unknit, L'Ancien tends to really hit its stride at about 2 years, the 2020 however is already precociously delicious…

Medium bodied with smooth, elegant tannins. The palate is layered with notes of dried cranberry and orange peel, liquorice, damson jam and cooked red fruits. I spend most of my time in the vineyards, I have learned to know them, I respect them and I cultivate them with care. In order to respect the lifeblood cycle and improve their immune defence system, I have opted for Guyot Poussard pruning. For your Bank Holiday Weekend - the outstanding, organic & biodynamic, LES ROCHER DES VIOLETTES, Petillant Naturel Originel

100% Chenin Blanc, pale gold colour with beautiful lively aromatics. A bouquet of acacia and honeysuckle with tiny hints of lavender. Fresh red and green apples, cooked apples and sweet apple sauce. Green grapes, lemon pulp and a flinty wet stone minerality.

A fine gentle mousse, the bubbles were created during a single fermentation under pressure in bottle using its own natural yeast and sugar - NO DOSAGE. (This method is known as ‘methode ancestrale’ which actually predates the traditional method of Champagne/Crement/Cava etc which use a second fermentation to create bubbles) Wonderful high acidity - the palate is alive with rich, mouth-wateringly ripe green pears, pink lady apples and lemon bon-bon’s. Wonderful malolactic flavours; shortbread and custard cream biscuit, buttery croissant and hazelnut. Finishing on a high with a kiss of white pepper warmth...

Xavier Weisskopf is an amazing young winemaker, and one of 5 growers who are actually making Pet Nat - a RARE, natural appellation that mandates low yields and ZERO modern intervention!

With the forecast for this Bank Holiday Weekend not looking great, we’ve chosen a selection of wines to help brighten things up!

Our first choice is Domaine Cheysson’s ‘Chiroubles’ - Chiroubles lies at the highest point of the Beaujolais Crus, the village nestles in a perfect amphitheatre of steep slopes and decomposed granite soils. The wines from the commune possess a striking red colour, and are supple, bright and elegant, with high-toned floral notes and at their best an unctious richness of clear red fruit. Domaine Cheysson was founded in 1870 by Emile Cheysson, who was apparently variously an undertaker, a sociologist and a statesman. (One cannot help but wonder in which order!) Cheysson built the current house over the rather more venerable existing cellar, and would retreat here whenever he could to make wine and tend to his livestock. The domaine, which comprises some 26 hectares (60 acres), is now run by Jean-Pierre Large of Morgon. The wines that he crafts here are characteristically bright, fruity and perfumed, with pronounced red fruits – redcurrant, wild strawberry, a twist of sour cherry, all goriously sleek and utterly delicious. Though in good years the wine is capable of ageing for a decade or more, it is so irresistible in its first year or two that I suspect it rarely is given the chance. This is quintessential high-altitude gamay, and we could quite happily live with little else.
