Last weekend Shelby & I gave a talk on bees to the children of Ely Wildlife group at their bug hunt. I took a frame of honey out of one of the hives and it was full! Need to get extracting. Watch this space - especially the people I owe a jar (or 5) of honey to.

Just moved the bees we extracted from the wall in soham from nuc boxes into a new hive. There are loads of wasps around robbing their honey so I will need to put out another wasp trap & feed the bees. Also found this huge bumble bee dead by the boxes. Never seen one so huge. Head to tip it's about 3/4 inch.

Love these new stamps

We think these new Royal Mail bee stamps are brilliant!

Since May 2014, the British Beekeepers Association (the organisation behind Friends of the Honey Bee) has been working with the Royal Mail to produce a new range of stamps featuring bees and their lifestyle.

They go on sale on August 18th, so keep a look out for them (and if sending us any post, remember to use your bee stamps!).

This afternoon/ evening's excitement was removing a colony of bees from a wall in Soham. Loads of comb - more than would fit in the nuc box & tens of thousands of bees flying around. Heading back shortly to collect & bring them home. They will have to live in the nuc box for a couple of days until I can get another hive here. This is when I am particularly thankful for all the wonderful people who have sponsored the bees so I can go buy another hive.

Many flowers are attractive to bees, with different types of bee varying in their particular preferences. In particular, long-tongued bumblebees such as Bombus hortorum tend to favour deep flowers, and of course short-tongued bumblebees such as Bombus terrestris prefer shallow flowers. Sometimes sho…

A call from a lady in littleport this afternoon meant stu & I jumped in the beemobile (again) to go and collect. This time the ladies had gathered inside the roof of a shed which was about to be demolished. We brushed them into the cardboard box & have left the box for them to settle into. Will be going back later to collect &;bring home

We had a call this afternoon from a man in Soham with a small swarm (caste) on a bush in his garden. Off to the beemobile Stu & I went & put them in a nuc box. We will go back to collect them this evening. I'd better get building the hive that turned up yesterday.

As you may be aware I am a local beekeeper who has been quite busy the last few weeks with swarms of bees. Lack of hive space is becoming an issue and someone suggested local people sponsoring a hive. I would like to offer local people the chance to support a honey bee hive in the Littleport area. £10 sponsorship for a year would include a jar of honey when harvested. The money would be used to buy beekeeping equipment including hives, frames & foundation, jars & labels for honey and other bee related paraphernalia. I would also hope to hold information sessions locally as time allows. Any assistance from interested parties would be welcomed. If you would be interested in sponsoring a hive Please LIKE THE PAGE & I'll send further details.
