Delighted to be launching our first wine subscription that’s just a bit different from the usual box of 6 or 12. We know that wine lovers shop around, we do it too. The idea is that at least once a month you want to have an extra special wine to open, we want you to trust us that these are two stunning wines.

One of the wines is exclusively sourced for the wine club subscription and the wines of the month promotion, so it won’t be available to shop customers during the offer period.

The wines offer great value for money, with a price point that showcases quality for both classic styles and up-and-coming gems. The place comes after the description this time as here we have a Pinot Noir bursting with fresh, juicy berries and the delightful crispness of stony soils. It’s incredibly expressive and stylish while maintaining a sophistication much more recommended to its Burgundian cousin once removed. Second fill French Oak subtly complements the fruit with spicy notes, accentuated by mild spices like allspice and cloves. On the palate, it’s delicate and elegant, featuring generous, dark fruit and youthfully polished tannins. With transparent vibrancy and slightly saline minerality, it flows fruit-forward into a spicy, cool finish.

Battenfeld-Spanier is a still a baby, set up by the ambitious Oliver Spanier in 1993. His vineyards are in the south, centred around the villages of Hohen-Sulzen, Nieder-Florsheim and Molsheim. The vineyard is run to certified Biodynamic principals and without the use of fertilizer or pesticides. After hand harvesting, the grapes are kept on their skins for between 8 hours and three days depending on the vintage, before being fermented spontaneously. Vinification for all dry wines is done in 1200 litre wooden barrels, with constant topping up to minimize oxidation, the wines staying on their fine lees until the day of bottling. At Battenfeld-Spanier their focus is on producing great dry wines from top Rheinhessen vineyards with a minimum of intervention. In doing so they favour the savoury and the mineral over the overtly fruity.

Despite the disguise this is 100% no muggle Pinot Noir, every bit an old world evolution in the winery that’s changed hands for over 200yrs

Founded in 2003, Les Clos Perdus, a small winery nestled in the village of Peyriac de Mer, Corbières, embodies the spirit of discovery. The name itself reflects the finding of isolated old vine parcels, ‘lost’ in the Haute Corbières and Vallée de l’Agly. These small vineyards, often overlooked due to their low cropping potential and inability to be machine-worked, have been transformed into a testament to Paul Old and Ben Adams’ vision.

Spanning 16 hectares, the winery is divided into 35 small parcels, strategically located across three distinct areas: Corbières maritime, Haute Corbières, and Vallée de l’Agly. The goal is to meticulously select specific varietals for each soil type, guiding the vineyards towards a harmonious balance and health that can be sustained with minimal intervention. Organic viticulture, biodynamic principles, and the lunar calendar play a pivotal role in this holistic approach.

The winery’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the meticulous hand-picking and sorting of healthy and vibrant fruit. Wild yeast fermentations, precise extractions, and extended elevage with minimal interference contribute to the creation of unique wines that authentically express their regional heritage.

Vines averaging 50yrs produce this wine, organic and biodynamic the attention to sustainability, low intervention and lack of filtering and fining it’s a joy to drink. The blend of Carignan 50%, Grenache 35%, Mourvedre 15% makes this a classic of the region. Bright damsons, sour cherries, and earthy notes fill the nose. Soft tannins give way to a light and vibrant floral lift. The wine boasts a nice complexity and length to suit any spring requirements.

Carlo makes delicious wines in the Asti foothills of Piemont. This Brachetto grape was originally from Provenance where it made rose and light reds. Here the team make a red wine at just 5.5% alcohol with a spritz of fizz that elevates the glass to be a real treat. Sweeter raspberry fruit with rose petals jump to your nose followed by cherry and shock horror red grapes once you taste it.

Perfect as it was for us with home made pizza, it can take some spice from Nudja or rich pasta sauce and sautéd mushrooms.

This and many more wines are ready to make your Saturday. Pop down to to try the red and white wines we have picked for our tasting machine all weekend

Big rugby weekend coming up, the temperatures might have gone up a little but it is still a time for a warming red wine. This is a perfect example from the lower reaches of the rocky limestone Dentelles du Montmirail, the higher and cooler vineyards of Gigondas can produce reds which add a welcome mineral structure to generous southern Rhône Grenache. Most vineyards are bathed in morning sun; sheltered by the Dentelles and with a mainly northerly aspect. Grapes mature more slowly and the harvest is later than other appellations; the extra time being highly suited Gigondas’ dominant variety of Grenache Noir. A blend of Grenache with a small proportion of aromatic Syrah and Mourvèdre fermented in traditional 20hl concrete vats. Aged for a year in French oak the wine shows lovely garrigue aromas, a slight mint note. Silky and balanced with powerful and fresh red fruits notes. A versatile wine that is perfect with stew, duck or a vibrant cheese board post match

A cracking alcohol free beer from this IPA is very drinkable. The pronounced hops on the nose carry’s into a very enjoyable beer. It’s actually reminiscent of the Duechars produced in the early 2000’s when the brewery was still independent and won best ipa in the world. Newbarns have done another homage to classic Scottish style and it really works as a proper ale

Under £30 for Rose Champagne, is there a better Valentines?Quite a delicate nose that begins with some soft strawberry and blackberry notes. After a few swirls of the glass, more watermelon and raspberry notes emerge which gives a lovely summery feel. On the palate, the wine is silky and well rounded with aromatic strawberries to the end.

Two lovely bottles of bubbly for Valentines Day this week, Champagne from giving that serious Rose style with colour from the Pinot Noir skins enriching the berry fruit. Or a Cremant De Limoux where Pinot Noir has been permitted since 2003, this Rose from .laurens still a Chardonnay blend with a balance of Chenin Blanc to compliment the Strawberry of the Pinot Noir.

We have a huge selection to chose from and every base just about covered for Thursday. We will even gift wrap with a jaunty bow

After last weekends duty rise on alcohol we have already started the quest to find new wines that deliver value and quality under £15. This is a wine that 7/8yrs ago we used to sell under £10. Now it’s just under £12 but the world has changed and it’s a fine example of what closeness to Europe and non regional wine can give us. With the cooling effects of the Med this Grenache & Syrah is full of prickley hedge fruit, plum and touches of spice on the finish. Great with pizza or stew there is a lot to love without busting the bank

Sunday Red and White taken care of, Broken Record Shiraz is a bouncing berry fruit from South East Australia, vegan if required but really this and lamb kofta is the pairing of gods. The Vermentino is a magical white wine filled with zesty lime, green apple with herby hints of rosemary on the nose.

Both perfect for a Sunday &

Glorious day, it’s no longer D*y January it’s Try everything February, also for Scotland’s first game of the six nations at home to Italy. If you are out in the New Town pop by and try some great wines in our Enomatic wine tasting machine. 4 reds and 4 whites to help you find that perfect bottle to pair with squashed Italian dreams. May we suggest this mighty fine blend of mostly Sauvignon Blanc, some Chenin Blanc and a snip of delicious Semillon from the fine slopes in False Bay South Africa. The care taken in the vineyard to produce the cleanest and brightest wine starts with the soli. Grown using Biodynamic farming practices the result is a wine that tastes flawless, the slow pace of life, horses pulling the plough through the soil with only natural pest prevention and fertiliser used. Gravity powers the juice from the roof of the winery with grapes pressed slowly, the gentle trickle fills the various tanks and barrels used to make and mature the wines. The mixed fermentation provides a spice rack of styles and parts to be brought together by the wine making team into this grown up serious white wine
