20/06/2024

Campbeltown whisky has a rich history, previously holding the prestigious title of ‘whisky capital of the world’ in the 1800s.

At this time there were over 30 distilleries utilising the ideal location & natural resources on offer. A port town filled with ships transporting its signature salty, smoky whisky. Today the town only has 3 distilleries but is seeing a real resurgence with two distilleries currently being built & one soon to begin construction.

We have received some new bottles from this remote region from the famed & well loved distilleries.

Kilkerran 12 year old is a lightly peated dram & perfect introduction to the Kilkerran range, with characteristic citrus notes & a recognisable Campbeltown oiliness on the palate.

Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 10, this is only released twice per year at cask strength & around 45PPM. Notes of freshly baked shortbread, cream soda, banana loaf & coconut shavings introduce this heavily peated dram.

Springbank 10 is a fan favourite & beloved bottle from this region. Matured in bourbon casks as well as sherry casks, adding a wonderful depth of flavour. Lightly peated, it marries a complex mix of maritime notes as well as fresh fruity flavours. A classic for a reason.

Woodrow’s of Edinburgh Campbeltown 7 year old is a blend of Campbeltown whiskies, almost all from Glen Scotia. Independently bottled here in Edinburgh. Aged in first fill bourbon barrels giving a creamy elegant sweet palate of bread pudding, white chocolate, popcorn kernels & dried mango.

Campbeltown Loch which is a blended malt created solely from Campbeltown’s five distinctive single malts.
Blended & bottled by Springbank. Offers fantastic value for a taste of this style while not compromising on flavour. Expect peach, apricot & floral honey with zesty notes of lemon pudding & a touch of salty soot.

Glen Scotia 12 year old ‘The Mermaid’ is a limited edition unpeated Palo Cortado Sherry finished single malt. It has a lovely sweet & nutty character with the classic maritime nuances of saltiness & Atlantic sea brine notes on the nose.

Most of these bottles are in very limited quantities so if one takes your fancy don’t wait around.

DOMAINE DAGUENEAU XXI 💫

The eagerly anticipated release of the 2021 vintage from iconic French winery Domaine Dagueneau in the Loire Valley.

Founded by Didier Dagueneau & today operated by his son Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau who took over in 2008 following Didier’s untimely death.

A true master of Sauvignon Blanc, Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau produces cuvées for their purity & precision.

Due to an incredibly challenging, small-yielding season (where over 60% of the crop was lost due to hail) & then a high level of rot towards harvest (from excessive Summer rain), the XXI is the only wine produced by Domaine Dagueneau in 2021.

It is a blend of the various cuvées that would typically be bottled separately. It’s all mouth watering gooseberry & elderflower on the nose with green apples & a tangy sense of refreshment on the bright finish. It reflects the cooler side of the vintage with a good grip holding the mouth.

The vineyard practices are & always have been a combination of the exacting (extremely low yields, hand harvesting in multiple passes to ensure each grape is picked at the perfect time) with the unusual, such as using horses to plough the soil between vines & using only organic sprays.

A very special wine that we know will not appeal to everyone as it comes with a particularly special price tag too! We are always over the moon to get a small annual allocation of Domaine Dagueneau’s & we love to talk about them when we can. They come with a fascinating history & an unwavering commitment to regenerative organic farming that aligns them with our philosophy for our wine range.

Thanks for reading! 🤓

We are very excited to get two new ciders in from Flemings and Linn from just across the Firth in the Kingdom of Fife! We had another Flemings Cider but it was so popular it's already sold out!

First up we have Flemings Le Mariage, a richer style of Cider but with all the clean, bright stone fruits you could wish for. There's some tannin there too to make a great cider for some fattier weekend dinners.

Secondly, we have Linn Cider Pet Nat, a rare blend of both apples and pears bringing the best of both worlds to this delicious sparkler!

These are both made in very small quantities so come grab them whilst they are still here.

We love working with smaller independent makers, distillers & businesses, it makes sense that we understand the ingredients, production chain & the people behind the bottles we sell. 🌱 🌾✨

Thompson Bros & Dornoch Distillery bottles have been on our shelves for many years now, we have done some one off whisky cask bottlings with them & we love to champion their products.

Congratulations is in order for their Organic Mediterranean gin just winning ‘Best Gin in Scotland’!!!

Excellent timing considering World Gin Day is approaching next week! Inspired by warm, slow Italian evenings, with distillations of fresh, seasonal organic herbs: lemon, orange, bergamot, thyme, rosemary and bayleaf. 🥇🍊🍋🍃☀️

We have their excellent value & delicious blends in at the moment, though they tend to fly out quickly - Lowrie’s Reserve, SRV5 & TB/BSW. 🥃

Plus two brand new arrivals, independently bottled by Thompson Bros from Dalmunach & Dailuaine, aged 8 years & 9 years respectfully.

With the Dalmunach expect flavours of white grapes, strawberry, praline & lemon tea on the nose, while the palate is creamy & honeyed with green apples. Under £50 & would make a great gift for Father’s Day or for a whisky lover who likes a smooth fruity dram, easy drinking with lovely complexity from fruit & sweet spice.

The Dailuaine is one for the Clynelish lovers! 🦡 🕯️

Its nose oozes with stonefruit, drenched in melted butterscotch with a side of vanilla ice cream. The palate has a gorse-flower, coconutty sensibility, with waxy peaches & that classic Clynelish-like candle wax texture. The finish is reminiscent of creme anglaise with meadowsweet. Delish. 🍦 🍑 🥥

Some lovely June evening light hitting our new monthly wine pack 💫

Here is a wine pack full of new things that we recently tried & enjoyed. Great value, tasty wines & fun labels for your dinner table & wine rack.

Inadvertently we have created a nearly all French pack with a Portuguese creeping in! We hope you enjoy this French themed pack with some of the best known regions & grapes featuring. 🇫🇷 🇵🇹

Nothing says British Summer like strawberries & raspberries & some of these wines are packed full of these flavours too! A bowl of Scottish red berries in a glass, or a slice of Summer Pudding.
We have not forgotten the quintessential Summer activity of BBQ’ing – come rain or shine we love to cook outside where possible. These wines will be great for entertaining & sharing in the garden. Easy, breezy, crowd pleasers for fun June times!

Includes 4 brand new wines, a fan favourite big red designed to eat with cold sausages at an evening BBQ & a crowd pleasing Sparkling from South West of France.

Enjoy!!! 🌞🥂🍾🍷 🍇

The Summer Fair was the first time we have held such a large tasting with a beer focus - There were over 100 beers & ciders open for tasting & they were tasting epic! 😍

Cork & Cask is very much a shop with a strong split between wine, beer & spirits, so it was fantastic to have an event that showcased all of these categories.

We opened our doors in 2013 as predominantly a beer venue & over the last 11 years we have grown to the full, colourful & varied shop we are today.

At the fair, we had a whole room (plus an extra table!) dedicated to beer & cider, we leaned into the brilliant local Scottish breweries we have stocked for years.

It also happened to be perfect cold beer sipping weather with the sun streaming in, doors open, a mini beer garden & a lot of sunglasses needing to be worn inside & out 😎

Thanks so much to the brilliant brewers & suppliers we have that fill our beer & cider shelves with excellently made produce all year round.

Thanks so much to all those who spent that beautiful sunny day inside pouring delicious liquids for our guests!! ☀️☀️☀️

If you were there on the day, there are just a few days left to spend the £5 voucher included with your tasting booklet. We have lots of the favourites from the fair still on the shelves - stocked up for Summertime. 🍺🍷🍇🥂🍾🍻🥃🍸🍹

Here we have some staff favourites from the Summer Fair from one of our wine tables, a long standing supplier we have worked with for many years.

Roland specialises in natural wines from small producers in Eastern & Central Europe with a focus on indigenous grape varieties.

It wasn’t even 2 weeks ago that we were all together at Marchmont St Giles with the sun out & good times flowing. The sun hasn’t been out much since but we have been blown away by the positivity from those who attended & lots of you have been in to pick up bottles & cans of your favourites.

Here we have just three staff picks but we could have easily picked more - we went for a French white (which is an unusual thing to find on Roland’s list!) a Serbian orange & a German Rosé in a litre bottle.

There is lots to read about them & the makers on our website but you’ll find some tasting notes below to get you salivating. 🍇

Les Errances ‘La Baignade’ -

A pure elegant Chenin Blanc from Loire Valley at just 10.5% alcohol. You’ll find lemon, apple & elderflower in this crisp refreshing mineral white, perfect to cool you down on a Summer’s day. A cold glass of this will have a similar effect to a jump in the pool like the label!

Oskar Maurer ‘Kovidinka’ -

An easy fun juicy orange wine from Serbia made with the grape variety of the same name as the wine. Packed full of stone fruit, mango, passion fruit, orange peel & a delightful herbal note, all of this fruitiness smacks with acidity to keep it feeling fresh, also at 9% alcohol for lunchtime picnics.

Andi Mann Rosa X -

Super drinkable juicy rose, with bucketloads of fruit – imagine cherries, raspberries, redcurrants & nectarines, screams for park & sunshine. Comes in a very shareable litre bottle.

We hope some of these can provide inspiration for your weekend drinking. Weather forecast is looking goooood 🍦☀️

ONE FOR THE BURGUNDY FANS

We have recently received a small allocation of 4 wines from Domaine Roulot!

Domaine Roulot is an esteemed Meursault producer, making wines focused on purity rather than the weight that the area is famed for. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 1999, all is in place for first class raw material and Jean-Marc is not afraid to pick early if the condition of the grapes suggests it.

Roulot's Monthelie is one of the rare red wines to emerge from his cellars. It comes from two parcels of roughly 40-year-old vines situated north of Meursault and to the west of Volnay. As with the Domaine's whites, there is beautiful purity and restraint, with low extraction and lovely aromatic finesse, With floral notes and bright red fruit. This wine is elegant enough to be enjoyed now, but can also be cellared for several years.

Next, his Aligote comes from two parcels in Meursault, one 50 years old and the other 70 years old, vinified entirely in stainless steel. A taut and linear expression with a restrained nose of lime zest, nougat and light spice. It's all about controlled power on the palate with refined pastry and citrus flavours, searing lemon acidity and a steely mineral edge.

Roulot's Bourgogne Blanc is a very pretty wine with a gorgeous center of stony minerality driving the citrus-tinged flavors. This is a serious example of Bourgogne Blanc with real intensity and tons of character.

Lastly, Roulot's flagship Meursault is an exceptional wine, both rich and elegant, with remarkable aromatic complexity and depth of flavor. The fruity aromas blend harmoniously with the oak barrel aging notes, offering a rich and nuanced tasting experience. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for over a decade.

These are extremely limited and so are one cuvee per person. Going live at 5pm.

A few of our favourites from one of our wine tables at the Summer Fair. 🍾🌟🍷

The sun may no longer be shining but these three wines were tasting particularly amazing & we wanted to highlight.

Maybe you tried them on the day & this is a reminder for you or perhaps you couldn’t make the fair but you’d like to hear our top picks…

Nanclares Dandelion Albariño

Alberto Nanclares produces Albarino from the Rias Biaxas area in Spain, using certified organic methods & dabbles in biodynamic practices. Benefiting from cooling ocean breezes, his wines possess a certain salinity that compliments the wines naturally aromatic & intense qualities. He has a minimal intervention style in his winemaking, allowing the true nature of the wine to take shape on its own. High in acidity with a zingy, pronounced style, this is a powerhouse Albarino! With a noticeable lees edge, the body is round & full, flavours of lemon, peach, nectarine & grapefruit in the glass.

Thibault Ducroux Morgon

A gorgeous natural Beaujolais from the famed village of Morgon. This had a wonderful purity of fruit with a ripe juiciness that kept you wanting another sip.

This shows as a classic Morgon through & through, with a dark cherry fruit profile balanced by fresh acidity, softly structured tannins & a long mineral finish.

Thibault is a new young winemaker who deepened his dedication to minimal intervention wine through encounters with Beaujolais natural trail blazers like Jean Claude Lapalu, Michel Guignier, Isabelle & Bruno Perraud & more. This is just the beginning for the winery, watch this space.

Gaintza Tzakolina Rosado

A rare treat as this is made in very small quantities due to the scarcity of the red Hondarrabi Beltz grape, a relative of Cab Franc. Fresh red cherry & cranberry are the perfect match for warm Summer nights!

Txakoli comes from the Basque country on the cool, green Atlantic coast of Spain. Typically it’s a slightly spritzy dry white, with a saline tang, cousin of other Atlantic wines Muscadet & Vinho Verde, it’s a natural partner to the abundant local seafood.

This Rose would also be excellent with BBQ prawns, pork or scallops & could handle a wee bit of spice.

We love Spanish wine & so do many of our customers!
🇪🇸

We like to champion the lesser known indigenous grape varieties, organic farming, smaller wineries as much as we shout about the classic much loved regions & famous grapes.

When we recommend wines from Spain, we like to talk about the diversity available from Sherry from Jerez, Txakoli from Galicia, Natural orange wines from Penedes, Ice Wine from Manchuela, Cava & Pet Nat’s for your Sparkling options & of course fantastic examples of Tempranillo from across the country.

The Tempranillo grape certainly reigns supreme in Spain. With its bold flavours of strawberry, cherry & red berries, deep ruby hues & versatility with oak for added spice & to***co complexity. Tempranillo grapes are the cornerstone of Spain’s greatest red wines for a very good reason, flavour & ability to age.

When most people think of Spanish wine or Tempranillo, Rioja is the first thing that comes to mind but for lovers of Tempranillo, it pays to look a little bit further & we love to direct people to Ribera del Duero. A fantastic wine region that is home to many of Spain’s most iconic wines. ⛰️ 🍷

This month we have three new arrivals from this specific region as well as other new wines from across Spain so we can spread some of that Spanish sunshine. ☀️☀️☀️

We were lucky enough to have a visit from Teresa at Bodegas Emilio Moro with lots of her wines open for a tasting that was incredible. You will now find two of their Tempranillo’s from Ribera del Duero on the shelf as well as a beautiful bright peachy Godello from Bierzo.

We also have a Summery Rosé from the region, made with Tempranillo, indigenous variety Blanca del Pais (also known as Albillo) to create a blend of red & white varieties. Flavours of strawberry & fresh acidity from the Tempranillo with the tropical fruit aromatics of the white grapes make a great food friendly Rosé!

Another great example of the type of wines that make Ribera del Duero a region to sample.

Please pop by for a chat about our new bottles or your favourite Spanish wine.

A few of these sexy tote bags available too as modelled by Connor 🍇

Sweet wine is not just for Christmas & they are also not just for desserts.

We have some incredible new bottles in that display such quality of winemaking & complexity that they would be just as good with a cheese board, charcuterie, pâté & bread or simply a beautiful glass of wine as a digestif.

All in half bottles, to open & pour a wee glass shared with friends.

There are some fascinating techniques happening to create these, to balance the sweetness, to get the concentration of flavour & maintain natural acidity.

We have a really special naturally made Vin Santo from the Chianti region in Tuscany by Fattoria di Sammontana. The local Italian grape varieties of Trebbiano, Malvasia & San Colombano are harvested late, laid out on racks to dry for a few days to concentrate the sugars. The nose on this is intense. So complex & slightly reminiscent of an old Madeira. On the palate it is alive! Fresh, zesty, with an insanely long finish of walnuts & hazelnuts.

The Szolo is a modern take of the cult dessert wine Tokaji using biodynamically farmed grapes Harslevelu & Furmint, an absolutely glorious blend of peach & elderflower flavours with vanilla & cinnamon. The sweetness & the acidity completely in harmony.

Staffelter Hof’s Auslese is from 2017 which was a particularly great vintage in the Mosel Valley. It has seen 5 years of bottle age in the winery’s cellar which leads to some beautifully integrated development in the wine. Stone fruits & lime zest with the start of more tropical notes. Finishes with an incredible hit of acidity on the finish to show off the quality of the biodynamic Riesling fruit.

There are not many wineries that have built their success by focusing on just one grape variety, let alone one that has been permanently out of fashion, but that is precisely what Bodegas Ximénez-Spínola have done since 1729. They dedicate themselves exclusively to the Pedro Ximénez grape & what they make is completely incredible from dry wines to sweet. This Delicado is well worth a try!

21/04/2024

We are very happy to introduce new English wine to our shelves. Made by Westwell in Kent, in Southern England, this winery follows the same ethos as lots of our wines making it a perfect addition.

In the vineyard, Westwell’s goal is to grow the best grapes that they can while protecting & strengthening the soil. They combine organic, sustainable & conventional practices, minimising chemical intervention to conserve the vineyard health & surrounding environment. They want to promote biodiversity with beautiful wild flower meadows & co-planting around the vines. 🍇🌱🌻

Innovation as well as sustainability is very important to Westwell, they were the first English vineyard to make an amphora aged wine & the first to successfully keg wine (better environmentally as they can be reused over & over). They continue to experiment - from making piquette using waste grape pressings & less traditional styles including pet nats & skin contact wines.

We have started off with two of their most classic wines -
Double Pinot 2022 🍷

A blend of Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier, it is classic cherry red in colour with aromas of wild strawberry & cherry on the palate. A light fresh Summery red with some real depth of fruit flavour & a lovely soft finish. 🍓 🍒

Pelegrim Traditional Method Sparkling ✨ 🍾

This is a Sparkling made in the same method as Champagne using the same grape varieties - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier. The wines are lees aged in bottle for 36 months to give depth, biscuity aromas & complexity. Expect a rich, toasty citrus & a little honeyed flavours in the glass. 🥂

Happy World Malbec Day! 🍷

We have a large range of this well loved grape from across the world including France, Spain & of course Argentina. 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 🇦🇷

Malbec’s origins lay in France where it is also known as Côt 🍇 but it has become synonymous with Argentina now after its planting there in the 1800’s.

Here in the shop we have many expressions of this red grape showing it off in different styles - fruit forward, oaky, organically farmed, spicy, rich & naturally made with minimal intervention.

Well worth having a chat with us next time you’re in & you can explore a bottle that sounds good to you.

Malbec doesn’t always have to be a steak wine either, but its dark brooding fruit does make a great match for meats or smoky bbq’d veg like aubergine or stuffed peppers.
The concentration of flavour with a Malbec also makes it lovely with spices & herbs such a black pepper, sage & rosemary, even mint alongside a lamb chop perhaps.

We have just welcomed a new organic Malbec at £13 to our shelves & we are due a fresh arrival from natural winery any day now too, whose wines we have loved for years.

It seemed a perfect time for us to celebrate this Malbec Day! 🥳

NEW MUSCADET 🇫🇷🌊

Domaine Bonnet-Huteau is run by passionate winegrowers Jean-Jacques, Rémi Bonnet & Vincent Pineau. Family-owned for over 150 years, it sits in the centre of the Sèvre et Maine appellation. Here they strive to develop the full range of flavours achievable from well-grown Muscadet & the minerality of each terroir they own (gneiss, mica schists, amphibolite & granite)

Les Gautronnieres - The nose of this lip-smacking Loire Valley white is filled with delicious notes of ripe lemons, wet stone & white flowers with a hint of butter. The palate is medium-weighted & saline with citrus skins & lemon pulp. The finish is a concentrated mix of more-ish bitterness & a salty touch. 🧂 🍋
The Les Gautronnières cuvée comes from Melon de Bourgogne vines planted on amphibolite rocks on silico-clay soil.

Clos Moulin Chartrie - Super delicious, mineral-led, precise wine. Aromatics of ripe white fruits, flint, citrus fruits, white flowers & stone. The palate has a gentle balance of weight & tension. A very pretty Muscadet which showcases the full potential of this beautiful grape variety. A classic match for fish & seafood 🦪
The Clos Moulin Chartrie cuvée from Domaine Bonnet Huteau comes from vines planted on Orthogneiss terroir composed of shallow soil. 🪨

New Mills Beer ✨🍺🍾

Mills Brewing are one of the UK’s most acclaimed wild ferment focused breweries. Mills Brewing was started in 2015 by Genevieve & Jonny Mills. They make small batches of beer with minimal modern intervention, relying on local wild yeast cultures & the influence of nature to ferment. A brewery with minimal intervention at its core. This is in keeping with how we approach our wine & cider range too.

However, with this release we have a slightly different direction, a 375ml ale yeast fermented beer in a half champagne bottle with cork & wire cage.

‘Standing Beer’ is somewhere between a farmhouse ale, a Belgian pale & a 19th century IPA. The beer is highly effervescent & heady, with aromas of citrus, stone-fruit & wood. The palate is dry, medium bodied & cleans off with an assertive peppery snap. ⚡️

This is the largest release have ever made to allow for more people to get a taste of their beers. This is the first in a series of beers so keep your eyes peeled for the next release - A pils that has been lagering over Winter!
