Power is out in a lot of Fram but not here! We're still open, warm, and have light and good beer.
In other news we have recently taken delivery of this most incredible perry from legendary cider maker Kevin Minchew.
It's a single variety Moorcroft, that's ended up being aged for 23 years after Kevin stopped producing cider or perry. The barn it's been stored in is scheduled for demolition and thus the perry had to be disposed of. Thanks to and and a few other helpful folk it's been released.
Moorcroft is also known as Stinking Bishop. A name you may know via a certain cheese that is washed in Perry. Specifically, Moorcroft/Stinking Bishop perry (though not this one I assume!).
The perry itself is stunning, it has a real depth of complex character, as you'd hope from something aged that long. Plenty of stewed pear and molasses flavour, plenty of rich oaked body and brioche savouryness, but don't assume that means it's sweet. A tickle of acidity lifts the whole lot and rounds it all out for one of the most special drinks we've had, or sold, this year.
Incidentally, it pairs very well with Stinking Bishop cheese which the cheese shop in Durham Indoor Market currently has in stock.
