We're teaming up with the Children's Book Project to help give more children access to books.

We're setting up points in our larger stores for customers to donate pre-loved children's books. Last year our customers donated more than 100,000 pre-loved books into special collection trolleys which enabled every child in 140 primary schools nationwide to each choose and take home two free books of their own. For many, these were the first books they had ever owned.

To celebrate the relaunch our community champions will also be hosting reading activities and bringing ‘Storytelling Magic" to life in their stores and local communities in partnership with BBC’s Tiny Happy People. Community champion Hayley Carrington from our Sutton in Ashfield store, pictured, said: "The project was a huge hit last year with generous customers and colleagues donating lots of books and we are looking forward to it being a great success this time round."

Children’s Book Project Founder and CEO Liberty Venn said: “The support that Asda families have already shown for our work is incredible. It shows just how much parents understand the potential for the books they enjoyed with their children to make another child laugh or dream and to create shared reading opportunities at home."

When a regular customer drove for 40 minutes to do the weekly shop at our Milton Keynes store only to find her new bank card wouldn't work our checkouts colleague Elaine immediately stepped in to help.

The customer, who's in her 80s, was getting upset at the till when she realised she hadn't fully registered her new card and that she faced a long return trip with another way of paying. The customer shops at Elaine's checkout each week and, as she knows her so well, Elaine said she'd pay for the shopping and that the customer could pay her back the next time she called in, which she did.

Elaine said: "I didn't hesitate. I couldn't see her going all the way back home and back here again! She's a lovely lady and we always have a good chit chat. She was very grateful."

Elaine didn't tell anyone at the store what she'd done – but when he heard about it store manager Babur was so impressed that he nominated her for an Asda service superstar award.

Babur, pictured here with Elaine and deputy manager Mustafa, said: "She is really inspiring and has made me, the store and the company very proud."

Happy Valentine's Day to Angie and Rob, who are our Wolverhampton store’s very own Romeo and Juliet.

They met in the store on Valentine's Day 30 years ago when they dressed as Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers and gave out chocolates and sweets to customers!

Angie, who's the store's community champion, said: "Rob was a manager on grocery here at the time and I was working on ambient and someone asked me if I could dress up as Juliet and then they asked Rob to dress up as Romeo. The store hired the costumes for us and I had a proper Shakespeare-type dress and Rob had the tights and everything! Rob was a bit shy but he did it. It's just a shame we don't have any photos from that time."

Rob, who's now food hall trading manager at the store, later asked Angie out for a date and she agreed and the rest is history. The couple, who have a daughter, Alicia, were joined by friends from Asda when they got married five years ago. Angie said: "Everyone loves Rob and we get on well with everyone. When we are at work we just do our own thing – I do make him the odd cup of tea though. Living together and working together just works for us."

Nineteen-year-old home delivery driver Joe from our Westbrook store in Warrington came to the rescue when he found 81-year-old customer Thomas had fallen down the stairs and needed urgent help.

Joe suspected something was wrong when Thomas didn't answer the door, so called his son Julian, whose phone number was on their online order. With his permission, Joe and a neighbour went into the house, where they found Thomas lying in the hallway. Joe called 999, grabbed blankets to keep Thomas warm and chatted to him and his wife Patricia, who has Alzheimer's, until paramedics and carers arrived. Thomas has since made a good recovery. Joe said: "I'm just glad he's doing well. I hope that most of the people I know would have done the same thing. I just did what I thought was right."

Julian said: "Joe was fantastic and I believe he saved my dad's life. I am truly blown away by his concern. I live more than three hours away so he kept updating me by phone. His main focus was the safeguarding of my parents. He stayed with my dad until a neighbour I had contacted could sit with my mum once the ambulance took my dad to hospital. Joe's been asking for updates on my dad, which shows what a remarkable individual he is. I really can't thank him enough."

His sister Amanda also contacted the store to thank Joe, who she says "deserves a medal". She said: "The world is a better place because of people like this."

Zaavan from our Hyson Green store in Nottingham was driving to work when she saw one of her regular customers had been clipped by a car as she crossed the road with her pull-along shopping bag.

Asda customer Breda, who has arthritis, fell to the ground and suffered bruising in the accident. Zaavan ran to help Breda, got her safely into her car and brought to the store to be checked out by a first aider, before taking her back home.

Breda has made a good recovery and called in to thank Zaavan for her help. She has been shopping at the the store at least twice a week since it opened and always goes to Zaavan's checkout. Breda said: "Zaavan is a lovely lady and really looked after me. She made sure I was okay as I was a bit shaken up. She drove me home to my partner Paul and then she called round on her way home that evening to check on me and to give me some flowers, which was really nice."

Zaavan said: "I had to help her. I couldn't just drive past. It could have been a lot worse, I think I was in the right place at the right time. A lot of my regulars are pensioners and I like to look after them. If it happened to me I would want someone to look after me.”

Colleagues at our stores across the UK are celebrating the return of Rollback and the famous "That's Asda Price" Pocket Tap.

We're lowering the price of thousands of products in stores and online, with an average discount of 25%. Asda community and customer champion Keira from our Alloa store is one of our colleagues getting into the spirit of things by posting a video to TikTok showing colleagues doing the Pocket Tap and showing some of the products included in Rollback. She said: "Everyone's really excited about it and there's a real buzz about the place at the moment."

Asda colleague Sheryl knows from personal experience just how tricky going shopping with an autistic child can be – so when she saw ten-year-old Olivia getting overwhelmed in our Rochdale Kingsway supermarket she stepped in to help.

She had a good chat with Olivia and then, with her mum Laura's permission, took her to the checkouts and made her day by letting her have a go at scanning groceries. Sheryl said: "Olivia was upset when she came in the store and sat on the floor, so I went up to her and asked if she was okay. Her mum said she is autistic and was getting a bit overwhelmed. I asked if she could come and work with me for a while. She stayed by my side and then I needed to go the checkouts, so I asked if she wanted to help and her face lit up. Her mum's friend went though the till so I let Olivia put her shopping through. She loved it. My six-year-old daughter Kadie-Leigh has autism so I know what it can be like, especially when out shopping; it can be quite overwhelming and quite challenging."

Laura said: "Olivia still talks about her time on the checkouts; it really did make her day. She left the store with a big smile on her face. You do get people who don't understand what is going on and just stare at Olivia when things get too overwhelming for her. She's actually been barred from some shops because of her meltdowns, but not Asda as everyone there is so kind to her. When I walk into that store I get a 'hello' from every single colleague. I have full blown conversations with them like I work there!"

When Dan from our Maidstone Living store spotted a man had fallen into the River Medway behind the store he immediately leapt into action – throwing a life ring for the man to hold onto and calling emergency services.

The fast-flowing river was swollen following the recent bad weather, so Dan used all his strength to hold on to the life ring's rope until firefighters arrived with a telescopic ladder. He said: "The rope had actually cut in to my hands and I had burns too because I was holding on so hard. If I'd have let go then it would have been it. Thankfully he had some strength left to climb out of the river and onto the ladder.

"I don't think what I did was heroic; anyone would have done the same. It's human nature to help others. I was at the right place at the right time."

Store manager Paul said: "We are all so very proud of Dan. He really is a hero."

Well done to 21-year-old Kieran from our Blantyre store who spotted that a customer had left his mobile phone at the self scan checkouts and kept it safe until he returned for it.

After calling in to pick up his phone, the grateful customer later wrote to the store to thank Kieran and said: "For your great customer service ... from the daftie who left his mobile at the checkout, but you sorted it."

Kieran said: "I'd hate to lose my phone, so I knew our customer would be worried. It was so nice that the gentleman took the time to thank me!"

The store's customer service manager Yvonne said: "Kieran is really popular with both younger and older customers. You always get him the same way and he's secretly known as our 'Happy Chappy'."

First-aider Jo from our Neasham Road supermarket in Darlington has been called a "guardian angel" for helping a customer who collapsed while she was shopping.

The customer and her husband, who are in their 20s, had just left the store when the lady started to get severe abdominal pain. Jo knew something was wrong as soon as she saw them in the car park, so helped them into the store so she could safely look after them. The lady fainted, so her husband called 999 while Jo put her in the recovery position and checked on her until paramedics arrived. The lady's husband later wrote to the store to say that his wife was OK and that Jo was "an angel sent our way."

He wrote: "Jo truly deserves all the praise and good things in life. We want her to know how deeply appreciative we are for everything she did." The customer and her husband returned to the store once she was was fully recovered so she could give Jo a big hug.

Jo said: "It was so nice to see them in better circumstances. The lady was so sweet. I was on checkouts when they came in and she came round to see me and give me a cuddle. She was very grateful. It was so lovely. It was so nice to see her better."

The Body Coach Joe Wicks surprised pupils at Dunbar Primary School with a special visit to congratulate them on finishing as the top fundraisers in our Cashpot for Schools initiative.

Cashpots for Schools has raised more than £5.7 million for 22,000 state-funded primary schools across the UK and Joe, who fronted our campaign, presented the school with a cheque for £4,215.88. The money will be spent on upgrading their playgrounds and creating a sensory garden. He said: “I know first-hand from the work I’ve done in schools just how much of a difference the Cashpot for Schools initiative is making to kids across the country. It’s such an honour to visit Dunbar Primary School to see the impact that their donation is going to have. It was great to see so many enthusiastic and excited children today – that’s what it’s all about.”

Annette, our Dunbar store's community and customer champion, said: "It’s been fantastic to have the opportunity to connect with the teachers and pupils. Seeing their excitement and hearing about their plans to upgrade their playgrounds and see the joy on the children’s faces was truly warming. It’s great to see our partnership making a real difference."

The school's deputy head teacher Emma said: "When Annette informed us of Joe’s visit, we were all so excited. It’s been hard to keep it a secret for the children, but it’s been an honour to be able to host Joe at our school. On behalf of the children and other teachers, I can't express how thrilled we are to have received this funding."

When an eight-year-old boy with cerebral palsy wasn’t sure if he had enough money to buy a big cuddly toy from our Stockton store, checkouts colleague Paul stepped in to help pay for it.

Paul, who has cerebral palsy himself, said: "I told the boy it was a magical dog and that it came alive when he went to sleep, and he got really excited. He said 'I hope I can get it, my mum said I can if I have enough money'. I then said to him that I'd go halves with him. He was really happy. I try to do something kind for someone once a month, even if it's just buying a cup of coffee."

The boy's mum was so touched by Paul's kindness that she wrote to the store to thank him, saying: "What a wonderful man he is. He made a young boy very happy."

When a customer was beginning to get upset that she couldn't find her car in our Carterton store's car park our colleagues Amy and Susan stepped in to help.

Seeing that she was getting overwhelmed, they stayed by her side before Amy started searching the car park and found it at the opposite end to where the customer usually parks. She was so grateful for they way Amy and Susan helped that she posted on the Carterton Community Facebook group to say thank you for their "customer service to the extreme." The post inspired comments like "Hooray for Amy. We all have bad days and need people like you to sort us out. I hope someone does something extra kind for you, soon", "The staff at Asda are all round amazing 🙌" and "Lovely to hear there are some lovely people around. Are you ok such a worry for you ###".

Store manager Aarron, who has nominated the colleagues for Asda service superstar awards, said: "I couldn't be more proud. It just shows how integral we are to the community helping customers with all aspects of their lives."

Candy had the purr-fect solution when severe flooding meant one of her older customers couldn't get into our Melksham store to buy her cat's favourite food.

The lady, who's 83, is recovering from a broken back and cares for her husband, who has Alzheimer's. When she phoned the store to share her predicament, Candy said she'd drop off the cat food pouches to her home after she'd finished her shift as she lives nearby. Candy said: "She phoned to see if we had any of the cat food in stock, and we did. She said she would try to come in to collect it, but I told her 'no way' was she coming in, as a lot of the roads were flooded. It was no problem for me to drop off three boxes of cat food for her on my way home. She was extremely grateful, bless her ... and so was her cat!"
