A delightfully New Zealandish Sauvignon but from South Africa, Brampton is a wine we used to sell many years ago. We have now purchased a parcel of about 500 bottles from the 2020 vintage at a bin end price and are delighted to offer it to you here. Really nice wine at a keen price too.

We have snapped up some bin end bargains from one of our regular suppliers which we thought might interest you.

The first of these to arrive from the bo***ge warehouse is a Shiraz Mourvedre blend with a full 8 years of maturity. This kind of wine is South Africa’s answer to reds from the Rhone Valley in France and they do it really well. Soft, tawny-coloured and really smooth as it goes in leaving the discerning client with no lingering pain whatsoever.

Not a huge parcel of just 150 bottles and not really available elsewhere, we estimate the going rate for such a bottle at retail to be around £15.

We have it for just £9 while the stock lasts so whip over to the website and order some.

White Bordeaux isn’t something we see all the time in the British market place. It may be found on a French Restaurant list from time to time but it is certainly not guaranteed to be even then.For many, Bordeaux is red. And indeed 93% of production is red just leaving four million cases of white.

That’s right, four MILLION cases. Bordeaux is a big producer…..

And of course a lot of it is cheap industrial splosh for blending, bag-in-boxing, local bulk selling, etc.But some isn’t and while the really stupid money is “invested” in reds (£5,249 for a single bottle of too-young-to-drink 2020 100% Merlot* anyone?) the whites can still don the Emperor’s suit when they want. Take for example the spectacularly rare 2020 Château Haut-Brion Blanc - a mere splash of 7,200 bottles were made and currently retail at £600 per bottle.
Too rich for you? Then can I suggest their ”second” wine; Château la Mission Haut-Brion; the little brother. £480 to you. For four glasses of a self-proclaiming second-rate wine.
Mmmm.
Or perhaps you’re still bouncing back from Covid? Then perhaps £96 for a bottle of neighbour-impressing Château Smith Haut Lafitte. Go on, they deserve it.

Meanwhile, back here in what passes for a kind of reality, our Bordeaux chums at Château Maledan who have heroically supplied us with beautiful Merlot-based Maledan Rouge for decades, seven years ago quietly planted an acre of Sauvignon Blanc vines on their estate. No fuss; Robert Parker wasn’t involved in the digging nor anyone from Hollywood as far as we know.
And since it takes vines a while to work up to producing actual fruit, only in 2019 was wine first wine produced.

And what a wine.

A relatively low 60 hectolitres per hectare yield was achieved through green harvesting which involves cutting fruit before ripeness and letting it rot in the ground thereby increasing the concentration of the remaining fruit. Less nutrient dilution you see. It’s a kind of contention ratio thing which you do when quality is your singular goal.So here we have that rare thing, a genuinely brand new product available in the minute quantity of exactly 3,299 bottles, a wine with no history, no customers, no volume and no marketing budget.

Knowing Vincent and Jean-Baptiste like we do we were happy to take a punt blind (no sample) and were very pleased we did. We enjoyed it a lot and it all sold through and we went on to buy 2020 too, the second ever vintage. Mostly gone but I managed to rescue a single bottle from the first allocation and retasted recently. And the development of this wine seemed to me especially fascinating and very promising particularly considering the newness of the vines.
A second parcel was made available to us and it has now arrived in the UK.
I rate this wine up there with some really impressive labels.

So what’s it like?

Firstly (and this is a UK market thing) we need to exorcise the grape - this wine should not be described as “Sauvignon Blanc” since it does it such a disservice. Oldy worldy producers don't generally talk about varieties so much as soils,etc. Let’s forget the variety and focus instead on terroir - this is Bordeaux Blanc first, a wine of the soil, the aspect, the winemaking and shares far more of it’s flavour and character DNA with other famous French references like Chablis, Beaune, Rhone Valley than it does with anything New World bearing the Sauvignon name. There is a complete lack of the shrillness that I associate with the grape replaced instead with a rich fullness, an almost oily texture, a real feeling of luxury.
And it will keep and improve for a bit longer although with so few bottles available I can’t see that happening.
In the end we were able to buy nearly 20% of the production and there remains a rapidly closing window for you to be a part of this story.

The 2021 has now been released interestingly now labeled “Entre deux Mers” instead of Bordeaux Blanc and I will be attempting to get some very shortly. Fingers crossed there’ll be some left when I can order….

Oh I almost forgot; the elephant in the room if you like. And this is more about our increasingly challenged business model of selling at a price based on cost plus margin than what we might be able to squeeze out of you for a special rarity.
