Consumer Co-operative based in Essex Welcome to Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society based in Essex with an annual turnover of over £103 million.

We trade in food, departmental stores, travel and funerals across Braintree, Chelmsford, Ingatestone, Danbury, Writtle, Hockley, Canvey Island, South Benfleet, Tilbury and Shoeburyness. Our Society is run like any other retail business, but with a difference - we follow a co-operative set of values and principles, and we are owned and controlled by our members (shareholders). Co-operatives have al

ways believed in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. That’s just as true today as it was way back in 1844 when the Rochdale Pioneers launched the first successful retail co-operative. The aim then was to supply goods to the general public via a membership scheme which cost £1 to join – a large sum in those days and yet today it still only costs £1 to join most retail societies including ours. Members were also entitled to receive a proportion of the profit from their purchases, which was returned to them in the form of a dividend, and this is still the case.

This Christmas, we are working with the Lennox Children's Cancer Fund and we are on a mission to spread joy to children with cancer and their siblings.

We need your help to make the festive season extra special! 💛✨

Here's how you can get involved:

• Visit one of our Giving Trees: Pick a gift tag from one of our Christmas Giving Trees - located in our Quadrant Department Stores - Chelmsford & Braintree.

• Drop Off a Gift: Bring your new, unwrapped gift back to the store with the tag you chose.

We’re looking for gifts for all ages, from new borns, to 18-year-olds. Items like toys, arts & crafts, LEGO, games, and fluffy blankets are always welcome.
Let’s make this holiday season brighter for these brave families!

With the Christmas season fast approaching, we are all too keenly aware of the absence of loved ones in our lives. With this in mind, we’d like to invite you to our Christmas Remembrance Service on Friday 13th December.

This year the service will be held at Old Park Meadow Natural Burial Ground, Coppice Lane, North End, Dunmow. CM6 3PL.

Please start to arrive from 6pm for a 6.30pm start.

This Fairtrade Fortnight, join us in urging everyone to 'Be the Change', by picking up Fairtrade products and speaking up for fairer trade. Fairtrade cocoa simply wasn’t widely available before 2000 and it’s been a story of continual progress, supporting smallholder farmers in Peru, The Dominican Republic, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. In May 2017, The Co-op became the first UK retailer to source cocoa on Fairtrade terms. Every spoonful of cocoa we use, from the chocolate sprinkles on our doughnuts through to the chocolate chips in our Irresistible cookies, is benefitting Fairtrade cocoa farmers. The Co-op's commitment contributes around £500,000 per year in Fairtrade Premium to farmers across West Africa and Central America.

Our Story

Welcome to the page for Chelmsford Star Co-op!

We’re an independent co-operative society based in Essex with an annual turnover of over £110 million, and we have 40 convenience food stores, two Quadrant department stores, two travel agents and eight funeral homes across central and southern Essex.

We’re a bit like any other retailer, but as a co-op we’ve been set up specifically to benefit our members and the community. In fact, we’ve worked out that 30p in every £1 spent in our stores stays in Essex and benefits the region in some way. It’s one of the reasons we have been voted BEST IN THE UK for the positive Community Impact we have, and we’re really proud of that!
