Welcome to Cambridge Distillery: once the UK’s smallest official gin producers, located in our co-founders’ sitting room – now an internationally-recognised multi-award-winning business, named three consecutive times as the most innovative distillery in the world.
Our Distillery was founded when owners William and Lucy Lowe were walking their much-loved labrador, Darcy, in the fields surrounding their home in Cambridge – and decided to establish their own gin distillery, led by innovation and the pursuit of excellence.
From the outset, the Cambridge Distillery has always taken a different approach to the production of this historic spirit. Inspired by our semi-rural location, we create gins using fresh, locally-available botanicals, rather than simply following the same recipes as everybody else. By distilling each element individually, we are able to reach previously unattainable levels of quality.
Every single gin that we have commercially released has been awarded at least a gold medal at international competition – and we still produce every bottle by hand in our distillery just outside Cambridge.
We are also the world’s first gin tailors: we capture pure botanical distillates for blending to the individual specifications of each of our customers. Once you have determined your own precise recipe, we store it under your own file, ready to produce more for you whenever you – and only you – order it. You can read more about this process on our Gin Tailoring page.
William Lowe, AIWS, Master Distiller: co-founder of the Cambridge Distillery and host of all of our tailorings. His career in the drinks industry spans 20 years, and perfectly complements Lucy’s skills in marketing and event management. Will is a Wine and Spirit Educator to professionals in the industry, was awarded the title of International Wine and Spirits Championship Associate Judge of the Year, and is the winner of highly coveted Wines from Spain scholarship for the Master of Wine qualification. As well as featuring on judging panels for wines and spirits, he writes for various trade publications and websites as a wine, spirits and cocktail expert. William has recently been appointed as the Diploma Spirits Educator at the WSET, the world’s leading wine and spirits education centre. In his time off (!) he enjoys competing in Iron Man and other endurance events.
Will likes his gin dry, with plenty of coriander, and his martinis with a lemon twist.
Lucy Lowe, Managing Director: co-founder of the Cambridge Distillery, Lucy’s extensive experience in marketing and event management perfectly complements Will’s technical skills. Lucy’s love of gin was in no small part the inspiration for the Cambridge Distillery. Passionate to the point of obsession on the subject of purity of flavour, she is the first obstacle that any new distillate must negotiate in order to be accepted into our range. When not in the distillery, Lucy is most likely found on horseback, or walking in the fields with Darcy.
Lucy’s favourite distillate is Earl Grey, and she prefers her martini with an extra olive.
Those of you who visit our showroom and distillery may very well be lucky enough to meet Darcy, the Distillery Dog.
