📍Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. Chateau Musar is quite possibly the only winery in Asia that is a household name. It was in 1930 that Gaston Hochar planted his first vineyards, after returning from Bordeaux. Its calling card is how extraordinarily well the wines from this winery can age and as equally impressive is how the winery managed to turn out wines of quality during 15 years of civil war in Lebanon, which finally ended in 1992. The vineyards are located in the Bekaa Valley, which is actually more of a plateau than a valley, but its elevated position, reaching 1,000 metres in some places means that the heat is not nearly as oppressive as you would initially imagine. The soils here are deeper, over limestone, and the age of the vines is about 35 years. 🌳🍇🍷 This vintage Chateau Musar 2016 will be a keeper for the medium to long term. Cabernet dominates the nose with its blackcurrant, plums and chocolate notes. 📍🇪🇸 Basque Country Wine Region is synonymous with amazing architecture, delicious food and some of the finest beaches. The region is famous for the beautiful coastal areas like San Sebastián, Zarautz and Getxo, as well as inland destinations such as Bilbao and Vitoria. Txakoli (pronounced “chah-kuh-lee") is the traditional wine of the Basque region in northern Spain. It is a cool, chilly region characterised by mists, rain, and verdant green hillside vineyards. Aside from the pronunciation of its exotic name, Txakoli is unique in the way it is served. By Basque tradition, the wine is poured into tall, flat-bottomed glasses from 8 to 10 inches in the air, which agitates the wine. This enhances Txakoli’s youthful effervescence and also makes for a great story. Astobiza creates this wine from 100% indigenous grapes grown and ripened in a unique microclimate bounded by the Cantabrian Sea, Mahastondo River and Mount Ganekogort. Terroir and fruit combined, produce a zippy bracing blast of tangy sour green apple and salty lemons. The Txakoli Pil Pil is the emblematic wine of the Basque country coastline. Perfect for pairing with light rice dishes and char-grilled fish, as well as sushi and smoked salmon.
