Quaff Fine Wine Merchant

Quaff Fine Wine Merchant Our two shops offer an excellent range of fine wines, craft beers and tasting events. We don’t have a regional speciality. Come and try us out.

Quaff Fine Wine Merchant was founded in 2005 as the brainchild of Toby Peirce. Toby's early adulthood was spent playing professional cricket, and this took him to Stellenbosch in South Africa in the English winters. Here he played cricket, coached schoolchildren, met his wife, and drank an intemperate amount of wine with the sporting sons of local producers and growers. This inevitably led to a ca

reer in wine when cricket finished, and Toby worked for a UK-based agent for a leading Champagne house, selling to the likes of everyone from Gordon Ramsay to Tesco. Having gleaned enough from this experience to set out on his own, he opened the first Quaff in Portland Road, Hove in 2005. The second shop was opened in early 2010 in partnership with Ronnie Janssen who has been immersed in the wine trade since he turned 18, having worked for the likes of Moet et Chandon, Lanson, Penfolds, and Lapostolle where he currently works. Nowadays we supply our customers with wines, mostly from small producers, that they won’t find in other shops. We don’t try to be overtly organic or biodynamic, although we find that a lot of our wines by coincidence tend to be made with less intervention in the winemaking process, and are thus more ‘natural’. Our aim is that regardless of style, region, colour or price point, we are offering you the best product available. We taste hard and often to ensure this is so. Each wine should be an archetype of that style; typical of the region, the vintage and showing the passion of the producer. We offer what we consider to be benchmark examples so that you are safe in the knowledge that what you are drinking is as it should be. The vast majority of our work is done by listening carefully to you, the customer, and making a recommendation accordingly, and we take this skill as seriously as selecting the wines themselves.

It’s that time! We are taking the hassle out of buying your Christmas wine (because that’s the stressful part…but anyway…) by offering a choice of three mixed six bottle cases to allow you to pass the festivities smoothly. The cases tend towards old school wines – Chablis, Rhone Valley, Champagne and so on – and are all a mix of fizz, light white, rose, and lighter and fuller reds, to match up to anything you care to throw at them! All you have to do is pick a number you’re happy spending - £75, £100 or £150– and we’ll do the rest.

Ever heard of heroic wine making? This region is a great contender in terms of ‘Crikey are you sure you want to plant anything on these slopes, how the heck are we going to pick it?’ conversations. Mencia flourishes here by the river and on slate soils, producing wines of softness but with a bright balancing acidity. Finca Millara are a wonderful small winery that have been reviving lost vineyards and producing small amounts of wines really well.

Customers often ask us what we’re drinking at the moment. At the weekend we cracked open this. A stunning German Pinot from one of our favourite producers, Jean Stodden. Situated in Ahr, a small village about two hours northeast of Frankfurt. Alexander took over this renowned vineyard from his late father Gerd, and together they have singled handily put this small village on the winemaking map. Only producing Pinot Noir, Alexander uses a combination of large oak foudre and new French oak barrels to give a rich, spicy Pinot with lashes of red fruits and oak notes.

One of suppliers at the end of a meeting showed us this, and quite frankly, it blew us away. So much so we’ve now delisted our Spanish equivalent Albarino as a result. Based in Pregreso, 25km inland from the sea in what is rated to be Uruguay’s best winegrowing region. Rich, peach and stone fruits open up into a textured a creamy palate. At £16.99, it’s a corker.

America! Land of the free. Having seen the election flood our news the past week, we’ve been moved to go for a US producer for this week’s offer. Our latest shipment from Avalon has just landed, and what better way to celebrate this than with a heftily discounted case?

We’ve shipped Avalon for a couple of years now. Based in the famous Lodi region of California, their Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are soft, juicy reds which pair perfectly with a hearty stew for the chilly evenings. The Chardonnay is a classic luscious US-styled oaked white, with lashes of vanilla, apples and rich, full body. The white is one of our best sellers.

New Port Claxon!!! We’ve just started stocking Quinta de la Rosa and we think they are going to fly out. La Rosa is known for its premium wines and ‘drier style’ ports. The estate is located in the heart of the Douro’s dramatic Cima Corgo region, with its steep vines, schist soils, and dramatic views. Prep the cheese board, stoke the fire and settle down for a relaxing evening with a delicious glass of Port.

Sherry! Amontillado is a brilliant wine to open an appetite or accompany a meal. The region has been cultivating grapes and making wines since the Phoenicians, with each successive civilisation imprinting their mark on the winemaking process. Amontillado is a very special style of wine which marries savoury salty notes with layers of walnut, salted caramel, and a touch of to***co. It’s always dry in style.

A light and elegant sparkler from one of our closest wine producers. We’re big fans of the small but lovely Court Garden winery. Howard and Hugo (father and son) first started Court Garden as a working sheep farm and expanded into winemaking during the most recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the 90’s. Made from the traditional Champagne grape varieties. It’s our best selling English fizz and it’s not hard to see why…

We hosted a delightful Ancient Worlds tasting a couple of weeks ago and opened up Rustavelli Kisi Qvevri from Georgia.

Georgia is recognised as the cradle of wine making using the Qvevri to produce fascinating and delicious wines for over 6,000 years. The Shilda winery is located in Khaketi, within the key growing regions of Georgia. Set at the foot of the great Caucasus Mountain range the vineyards are relatively warm and humid but cooled by the mountain winds.

It went down a treat and is perfect for a hearty autumnal stew.
