The spring sun is shining and the bluebells are out. What a perfect day to celebrate Bluebell Vineyards’ ‘Ashdown’ range of English still wines 🌞🍇

Ideal for a special occasion, or for refreshing early summer drinking. The wines below are in stock and chilling in our fridges.

✨Bluebell Vineyards, ‘Ashdown’ Chassalas 2020

An English still white wine crafted from 100% Chassalas grapes, the only plantings of the variety in the UK.

Aromatic composition of delicate white flowers, ripe citrus, stone fruits, lime zest, peach blossom and subtle smokiness.

Well balanced, crisp and refreshing.

✨Bluebell Vineyards, ‘Ashdown’ Valley View 2020

An English still white wine grown from a single Chardonnay clone (clone 75) on a single plot (Valley View).

The grapes are crushed & de-stemmed before being barrel fermented in old French oak barrels and undergo partial malolactic fermentation.

The wine has a lovely creamy character with great acidity and a mild oaky finish.

Elegant and balanced the wine continues to develop fuller, deeper & rounder fruit and vanilla notes with bottle age.

✨Bluebell Vineyards, ‘Ashdown’ Ortega 2020

A rare chance to try an English still wine crafted from 100% Ortega grapes.

Not usually sold to trade we begged and pleaded until we managed to prize away a small number of bottles from the Bluebell cellar.

Half the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks. The other half in old French oak barrels.

The assembled wine is aged for 4 months in old French oak resulting in a bold and complex wine.

Golden in colour with bold aromas of apricot and hazelnut leading to flavours of ripe peach.

A complex wine with a rich mouth feel and oily viscosity. Subtle rubber and gun smoke aromas play a long beguiling finish 🍇🍇🍇

The full-bodied aromas & creamy texture of the winery’s flagship Barrel Aged Blanc de Blancs.

The fruity palate of ‘Ruby’ a Sussex sparkling red made from the only commercial plantings of Merlot in the UK.

Classic Cuvée 2011, a late disgorged Sussex sparkler. Aged 10 years on fine lees providing heightened complexity, a full body, creamy texture and ripe, bright citrus fruit aromas 🥂🍾

A big thank you to Cathy at Bluebell Vineyards and winemaker Kevin Sutherland for being so generous with their time last week! 🍾🥂

A breakfast tasting of 10 wines, 3 stills & 7 sparklers ranging from pure & delicate, to fragrant & aromatic, to bold & complex!

The wines were showing sensationally well so much so we began to wonder was it a fruit day? 🍇🍇🍇

The biodynamic calendar specified a root day but the wines were singing to a chorus of blaring trumpets!!! ✨

🚨New wine alert!

Two new wines just in from our favourite Italian wine region, Langhe in Piedmont.

🍇Franco Conterno, Langhe Chardonny DOC ‘Bujet’ 2021, organic

Franco’s Langhe Chardonnay DOC was born from the Bujet vineyard in Monforte d’Alba.

Aged 4 months in stainless steel vats the wine is fruity and aromatic with hints of tropical fruit.

🍇Franco Conterno, Langhe Freisa ‘Cascina Sciulun’ 2022, organic

Langhe Freisa DOC ‘Cascina Sciulun’ was born from native Freisa grapes grown in Castiglione Falletto.

Garnet red with purple highlights. Intense nose, very floral with fresh fruit aromas, strawberries, raspberries and red cherries.

On the palate, fresh, tannic and savoury. A classic Italian gastro wine!

✨Notes on the grower…

In the heart of the Langhe, in the hamlet of Bussia di Monforte d’Alba is Cascina Sciulun, a typical historic Piedmontese farmhouse.

Built in the mid-nineteenth century the house has always belonged to the Conterno family.

The company Franco Conterno has deep roots, grandfather Pietro first allocated 18 hectares of land to Nebbiolo vineyards, initially to sell to other wineries for vinification, later destined for the creation of prestigious wines vinified and bottled at the estate.

Grandson Franco took the helm in 1995 with his wife Vilma, in recent years Franco’s two sons - Daniele and Andrea have joined the company.

Domaine Haute Févrie, Muscadet sur lie _Clos de la Févrie_ 2021, Loire, organic & vegan ✨

The Haute Févrie estate is located in the heart of the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation, east of Nantes.

The premier region of the Pays Nantais located at the mouth of the Loire River, Neptune’s own vineyard and home of Muscadet.

The ‘Clos de la Fevrie’ vintage is from very old vines planted on the best terroirs of the estate.

The shallow soils force the vine to draw its resources from deeper down, near the bedrock, making a wine rich in minerals.

This is a Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur lie with a powerful body and generous, extroverted flavours 🍇🍇🍇

Placed beside a plate of shrimps, oysters or mussels is perhaps one of gastronomy’s most convincing clichés. But Muscadet in its maritime context is still big hit with us! 😍🥂🍷🍾

✨New Winery Alert!!!✨

Secreto Patagónico - Argentina - Patagonia

A sustainable and environment focused winery in San Patricio del Chañar valley in Neuquém.

Started in 2003 by Carlos and Cristina Groppo Parisi and now run by their son Tomas and daughter Sofia, who will oversee the transition to full organic status in the vineyard by 2025.

The sand and gravel soils in San Patricio del Chañar as well as the clear distinct seasons in Patagonia provide ideal conditions for creating balanced elegant wines that perfectly reflect the terroir.

🍇Pinot Noir is the focus for the reds with old vine Pinot indicating exceptionally high potential.

🍇There is also Malbec that shows more balance than those from Mendoza while good Burgundy-style Chardonnay is another local speciality.

Bright, distinctively sculpted wines, strong on structure and character. Argentina keeps on surprising us!🍷🍾🥂

✨Small Grower Champagne: Goutorbe-Bouillot✨

The entire 8 hectares of Goutorbe-Bouillot family vineyard is in Damery, a picturesque wine village within the Marne Valley.

The Bouillot family alongside the Goutorbe and Papleux families have been producing Champagnes here since 1911.

Since 1989 the Domaine has embraced the ‘soléra’ or ‘perpetual reserves’ method which consists of stacking the barrels on top of each other.

The oldest wine is located at the bottom, while the higher up the cask floors the younger the wines.

At each racking the wines go down one level and mix with the previous residual wine.

Champagnes made from soléra are generally fleshy, greedy and deep wines.

This month we are delighted to announce that Sussex grower Stopham Vineyard will be joining the tasting at Country Wines to show their range of fabulous Sussex wines. We will also delve into the Country Wines cellar and bring up a special red wine that we have given an extended period of bottle refinement at the suggestion of winemaker Peggy Rambault of Domaine La Florane.

This will be our last event of the year, join us on the night and let's make it special 🥂
