In Spain there is a tradition for ageing wines in oak barrels and sometimes in-bottle prior to release. Four labelling terms are used to reflect the style and quality of the wine - Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. 🍇🍷
Joven- Typically young, fruity wines which are not subjected to minimum ageing.
Crianza- Must be aged in oak barrels prior to release. During this time they can develop vanilla, smoke and cedar flavours alongside their primary red fruit flavours.
Reserva- These wines must age for extended time before release, in both oak barrels and in-bottle prior. This produces softer tannins and the fresh red fruit flavours become cooked or dried in character.
Gran Reserva- These wines are subject to the highest minimum ageing requirements and typically have the most complex, pronounced flavours from the ageing process including dried fruit, oak, cedar, smoke, leather and mushroom.
