We're not closing!

There have been news stories in the press in the last couple of days about post offices closing, and we've understandably had worried customers asking us about it.

We'd like to set everyone's mind at ease and let you know we're going nowhere.

The story has come about because the majority of postmasters earn less than minimum wage in payment from the post office for providing the service that we do. It's why the majority of post offices are combined with a retail offering, the post office simply does not pay the rent!

Earlier this year the government (who still owns the post office), sacked the chairman of the PO and the new one instigated a strategic review of the organisation, the result of this was announced yesterday.

The media jumped on the fact that some post offices may close. These are all what are known as DMBs, or directly managed branches. These are branches that have no retail offering to offset the cost of the post office, so often operate at a loss. There are around 11500 post offices in the country, only 115 of these are DMBs.

The other takeaway from the review is that in the next 5 years they want to pay us more. This is great news, especially with business rates, national insurance and minimum wage increases all coming next year.

But in the meantime we like other small businesses need your support. Royal Mail don't want you to use us as it costs them money. If you buy your postage online you save a few pennies. If you come into store to post you are ensuring that your post office will be there tomorrow, and next year, and the year after.

We've noticed quite a few customers buying from Amazon Marketplace having to pay for postage back to countries like China when they need to return an item. These are usually low cost items where it doesn't always make sense to pay the high postage cost, which I suspect is the idea.

Whilst we make money from sending these parcels, this cost should be paid by the seller. The screen shot is from Amazon's policy, and I think it's pretty clear!

Remember anything going abroad will need a customs label attaching with contents, weight and value listed. We can print it out for you or you can go to the post office website, do it in advance and simply show us the barcode when you come in.
