Ardbeg Committee Exclusive Whisky 17 YO

First released over 25 years ago in 1997, Ardbeg 17 Year Old was one of the first bottles to leave the Distillery after reopening. A quarter of a century since he first created this magnificent recipe, Dr Bill Lumsden – Master Distiller - has meticulously crafted this release to mirror the original, retracing the flavour profile note by note, and choosing to bottle at 40% strength, just as it was back then. Distinctly balmy and medicinal, an enticing minerality bursts into sweet smoke and malted barley. Its peaty presence is undeniable, with hints of tar and oak.

👃: Fresh and clean, with hints of pine resin, aniseed, sea spray and lavender soap- very gentle, very restrained, and rather elegant for an Ardbeg. With water, there is a distinctive, flinty minerality, along with subtle hints of sweet peat smoke, malted barley, and a touch of toasting bread.

👅: A beautiful, creamy texture is followed by a lovely combination of flavours, with aniseed toffee, café latte, fennel and gentle antiseptic soap. The peat smoke is present, but in a very restrained manner, and leads into a lingering aftertaste with chewy oak, cocoa powder and tar.

The Craigellachie distillery lies in Banffshire in the very heart of the Speyside region of Scotland, between Rothes and Dufftown. The distillery stands alone, perched high on the rock of Craigellachie (from which it takes its name) overlooking the confluences of the Rivers Fiddich and Spey. But don’t be fooled that this is a typical Speyside dram – for it is anything but! Described as ‘A style seldom met with now’ by famed whisky writer Alfred Barnard, Craigellachie is a unique, robust and muscular whisky with a hint of pineapple running through the range.

Speyside Single Malt Whisky - 23 Year Old
------------------------------------------------
Malty sweetness and fresh tropical fruit begin a sensory journey with elements of citrus and toasted oak. Vanilla and spicy cinnamon emerge, invigorated with a zing of menthol freshness. And pineapples, this time over a campfire! Long and lingering with a sweet spicy finish

Matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks which bring vanilla, toffee and fudge notes, and first fill ex-Sherry casks providing richness and complexity.

Nose: A nice oily, slightly dirty and industrial note balanced by orchard fruits. (Almost evoking Campbeltown, until the fruit takes over.) And it’s in that baked apple, heather honey and mead zone that the dram settles. Sulphur – just a hint, just enough. Slightly soapy too, with a flash of tarragon and something meaty, like a chicken broth.

Palate: Baked apples, pears and a heft of meatiness dominate the palate. Oily, and the characterful sulphur comes to the fore. Herbal, and slightly ashy. Honey, but it’s not that sweet. Nutmeg.

Finish: There’s a lovely texture that comes through and an oaky, tannic bitterness with cloves and pepper.

Speyside Single Malt Whisky - 19 Year Old

An incredibly rare expression of Craigellachie that has more biscuit-y sweet intensity and a bolder pineapple note compared to the 17 year old. This is the bottle that Craigellachie fans seek out. After an initial maturation on a combination of cask types, half of the vatting goes into first fill sherry casks and half goes into first fill bourbon casks to give an intense and bold example of 'The Rock of Speyside'.

Intense aroma of pineapple chunks in syrup, spicy, rich and complex, fortified with an intriguing sulphured backbone. To the taste this 19 year old Craigellachie delivers a sweet biscuit-y base, with a hint of smoke.

Speyside Single Malt Whisky - 17 Year Old

Craigellachie 17 is smooth and mellow, the aroma opens with vanilla and rich, silky notes of exotic fruits, canned pineapples and a hint of smoky liquorice.

Nose: Floral with a lot of vanilla, cotton candy and marsh mallow. Lemon pound cake and fresh grapes join in. With the whisky in a covered glass for about 10 minutes, the sour nose of the 13 appeared, but dissipated almost immediately when uncovered. Cinnamon appears too as well as some star fruit.

Palate: Relatively bitter and far less sour than the 13, with spice – chili pepper, cinnamon and cardamom – with a light sweetness. For a fleeting moment the taste of IPA beer crosses the tongue.

Finish: Bitter citrus in the mouth, tangy on the sides of tongue and spicy down the gullet. This finish is close to perfection!!

Craigellachie 13 Year Old evokes Bonfire Night: aromas of oozing toasted marshmallows, fire-roasted pineapples and baked apples studded with cloves, with the tang of cordite lingering in the background.

Initially matured in a mixture of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks. 50% of the 'blend' is then finished in first-fill Sherry casks, the rest in first-fill Bourbon.

Today is Trafalgar Day, the celebration of the victory won by the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, over the combined French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.

Pusser's Rum ‘Gunpowder Proof’ is a traditional Royal Navy style rum produced at original Admiralty strength and in accordance with the Admiralty’s blending recipe last used when the Royal Navy discontinued its daily ration on 31 July 1970.

👃Pungent molasses, treacle, toffee, honey and vanilla with oak, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.

👅 Full-bodied with a more enhanced flavour profile than the lower proof Blue Label.

🏁 Long finish, and despite its strength, smooth and mellow.

Pusser’s ‘Gunpowder Proof’ is a traditional Royal Navy style rum produced at original Admiralty strength. Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the Royal Navy ship’s “Pusser” shutdown claims of watering down sailors’ daily tots by dousing a bit of gunpowder in the rum and attempting to light. If the mixture ignited, the rum was “at proof.” If it didn’t, the Pusser might find himself tossed to sea.

Pusser's Select Aged 151, or Overproof, is produced at "cask strength," as it was shipped to the Royal Navy victualling yards in Deptford, Gosport, and Devonport for blending and dilution "to Proof." This blend of rum is aged a minimum of three years, and produced in accordance with the Admiralty Regulations for rum that were in effect at the time of the custom's termination of the daily tot in 1970.
