Easily one of the best value wines available right now. I honestly can’t think of a better wine for £26. If you follow the stories there has been a catalogue of library releases of the reserve Cabernet from various back vintages. Also back vintages of the Vergelegen GVB and flagship V. Abundance of cassis and stewed plum, menthol and toasty smoke. Check it out.

Vintage rose champagne with this age doesn’t come around often so get involved. As with all vintage champagne I like to take it out of the fridge leave on the side for half an hour and then keep it out. Absolutely essential here as it kept improving as it warmed up. There was a 37% proportion of Chardonnay in the blend here also which kept things even more interesting. Toasty brioche, citrus peel and peach melba. Lingering finish with toasty red berry fruit. 🤩😍. Limited stock. Check out the website for more information

I had an extremely privileged experience of a vertical tasting spanning 2022 to 2008 of Malvasia Istria style at Matosevic in Croatia. Described by the late Steven Spurrier as "Croatia’s best winemaker", Ivica Matošević has established himself as a force of nature in the country’s burgeoning wine industry. Most consumers as with many wines like to consume fresh from release. It takes time and patience cellaring but the rewards are worth the wait. Cellaring also doesn’t need to be constrained to high end wines as this wine I am selling at £15.95.

The tasting! Off the bat 2022 you have stone peach, citrus peel, floral bouquet backed up by fresh acidity. The development through ages you taste the honeyed fruit, almond notes, saline notes and floral exuberance coming through and mellowing of the acidity. It was interesting to taste how the acidity prevailed in the wetter vintage years which resulted in them almost defying their age.

The Antiqua is barrel fermented with extra ageing only in exceptional years that adds spice notes that makes it extremely friendly for food pairing. Tasted both the 2016 & 2018. Adds complexity in a unique way.

The 2019 ‘Grimalda’ Red is the first organic certified vintage of this Teran, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon blend from a terraced, sunny, single vineyard in Central Istria, near the village of Grimalda. This wine has elegance and balance with the international grape varieties complementing the local Teran.

Highly recommended wines to get a taste of Istria!

New listing and great value still red Douro Portuguese wine from Ramos Pinto. £15.95 bottle price and in my mind a price point where Portuguese wines really rise above the crowd in terms of quality. Lots of blackberry, plum, dried strawberry, followed by toasted spices and subtle smoke. Good strong finish. Lots more in the Portuguese category like this to check out on the website.

Probably not what most people are thinking about right now but the 2022 rose wines are starting to arrive. This is fantastic and in stock now. It will definitely be a mainstay this summer. The rosé, made solely from estate-grown fruit, is a blend of Grenache, Tibouren, Cinsault and Carignan. Pale pink salmon colour, plenty of wild strawberry, raspberry with citrus lift and subtle herbal notes. Perfect.

Incredible and rare 2012 old vine Hunter Valley chardonnay from Tyrrell’s. It’s made from the original block planted by Murray Tyrrell in 1968. Only two barriques were bottled. Lovely light golden colour. Honeyed stone fruits, lemon & orange peel, toasted cashew, hints of struck match, crisp acidity and great length. Love this. New arrival in stock so please check out the website for more information.

Epic wine tasting this week with Marc Kent from Boekenhootskloof. Launch on the 2020 vintage with library tasting of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon & Semillon from the 2001, 2002 , 2009 and 2010.

It was interesting to see how the wines have evolved. Not only in the bottle but also in the vineyards used and grape blends.

The 01s had great maturity but still well alive and very enjoyable. In contrast the 02’s from a bad vintage year which were so much more developed and for me over the hill.

The 09s and 10s were singing and my favourites (library stock coming soon!) I personally like this spot where early tertiary development is balanced with good fruit

2020s are tasting great but obviously very youthful. The Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon displayed more elegance than the Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon. Plenty to enjoy but as always cellaring will be rewarded.

Mince pie & port review. ALDI specially selected all butter mince pie. The filling was great in flavour but the ratio of the mince was not balanced to the heavily weighted buttery pastry. The Fonseca port was great and was a heavenly match. This made up for the mince pies shortfalls.

New arrival Domaine de Montille, Bourgogne Blanc, 2019.

The fruit is sourced from a five-hectare plot, 'Le Clos du Château', situated on the border of the Puligny-Montrachet vineyards. The soils consist of silt and clay, which imparts a richness and texture to the wine. The Domaine has practised organic viticulture since 1995 and was certified organic in 2012. Since 2005, it has also converted to biodynamic viticulture.

Back in stock with the 2016 vintage. If you want to understand what Bandol red wine is all about then trying Tempier is a must!

The Estate’s prominent cuvée blends the discrete strength of Bandol with the elegance and finesse which characterize Tempier. This complexity is a result of different terroirs of the estate and the variety of its clay-limestone soil located around the Estate but also in La Cadière, Sainte Anne d’Evenos, and Ollioules. There are sandy marls, limestone greseux from santonien, rudist limestone and recent barely deep horizons of colluvions. Plus, there are various sun or wind exposures.

I think I would say Mullineux are my favourite South African wine producer. This fantastic great value old vine chenin blanc is a must try.

This wine is made from three sustainably farmed vineyard parcels from different parts of the Swartland. One parcel is sourced from 40-year-old old vine Chenin Blanc grown on the stony shale and schist-based soils of Kasteelberg, which retains heat well, ensuring even ripening and adds a mineral freshness to the wine. The other two parcels are from old, dry-farmed bush vine Chenin Blanc planted on the decomposed granite soils of the Paardeberg. The age of the vines, along with the dry conditions gives complex fruit with concentration of aroma and flavour.

The wines are named after the street where Chris and Andrea lived in Riebeek-Kasteel when they first started making their own wine. Originally renting vineyards and cellar space, they registered their Liquor Licence to their home address, or as Chris puts it – “effectively semi-legally bootlegging out of our garage”. They now make some of the most lauded wines in South Africa, with Kloof Street serving as a reminder of their modest beginnings.

If you are looking for a wine to pair with classic New York hot dog then look no further! Lots of factors to consider in this wine pairing due to the smokiness of the sausage, acidity of the condiments and sweetness of the fried onions. The Antonella Corda, Cannonau di Sardegna, 2020 is a perfect match. Cannonau is the Sardinian name for Grenache. Why it works! Tannin is low enough not to clash with the acidity of the condiments. Smokey spice notes compliment the sausage. The ripe red fruits compliment the sweetness of the fried onions. 😊😋. Please check out the website for more information on the wine. Thanks to for the hot dog recommendation

A couple of new Amarone wines in stock from Guerrieri Rizzardi.

Amarone Classico 3CRU is made from hand-picked grapes from our three Cru vineyards of Calcarole, Pojega & Rovereti. After the grape drying period the wine undergoes a long fermentation followed by three years matured in oak and is normally released in the 4th year following harvest. In only its 2nd vintage (2012) 3CRU won Best Amarone at the Decanter World Wine Awards and vintages since have received multiple accolades from the international press.

Villa Rizzardi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva 2015. The grapes for this Amarone are from the Pojega vineyard where the average vine age is at least 30 years. It's bottled 4 years after the harvest having spent at least 36 months in mostly French oak barrels. Villa Rizzardi Amarone Riserva is only produced in the best vintages.

New arrival and new vintage. Allocations have now been lifted on the new vintage and healthy stock have landed in the UK. A pleasingly rich Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with vibrant aromatics and a fine balance of acidity. Complex and elegant, the nose opens with classic characters of blackcurrant bud and freshly cut thyme. Underlying mineral, saline nuances from the grapes grown in the Blind River sub-region combine well with the tropical notes of passion fruit and melon from the Wairau Valley vineyards. Please caheck the website for more information.

New arrivals from Boekenhoutskloof and newly released for the UK. Both the Syrah and the Chenin Blanc come from Swartland 💪. The property is situated on the Riebeeksrivier Road, between Riebeek-Kasteel and Malmesbury and sits on the south-western slopes of the Kasteelberg. This pocket of the Swartland undoubtedly produces some of the finest grapes in the appellation. The soil types on Goldmine include Brown Schist, Blue Schist, Quartz along with deposits of Table Mountain Sandstone (weathered and washed from the Kasteelberg). The bedrock is deep Schist. The experience of Goldmine and its soils results in concentrated, yet finessed, textured and well-structured wines. The name Patina is derived from its source. Relating gold prospectors with their mining pans and the patina that developed on their equipment over time. Please check out the website for more information.

New stock arrival. Tapanappa, Foggy Hill Pinot Noir, 2014. The colour is dense by Pinot Noir standards reflecting the sunny vintage effect on berry pigmentation and the effect of plucking the leaves from around bunches before veraison. The fruit aroma is of spicy, ripe cherries with the floral notes that contribute to Pinot’s “peacock’s tail”. 2014 has to be one of the most aromatic Foggy Hill Pinot Noirs made. Please check out the website for more information.

New stock arrival. Casa Castillo is the leading producer of southeastern Spain, and their pure, un-grafted Monastrell Pie Franco is one of the greatest wines from Spain. The Pie Franco comes from the oldest vineyard (about 75 years old) on the property, La Solana. Solana is noted for its sandy soils that are phylloxera resistant but not completely immune and each year a few vines succomb to the disease which combined with the low yields means that there is very little Pie Franco to go around. Please check out the website for more information.

I thought I would introduce this newly listed wine for international Shiraz day. Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Shiraz, 2017 from Stellenbosch, South Africa. I sampled this at the London Wine Fair and was excited that it was 🥊 above its price and presents excellent value. Retail price is £15.50. The excellent value also applies to the Vineyard Selection range as a whole and I already stocked the Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Check out the website for more information.

A few highlights from Sardinia. Vermentino is the main white grape variety and much appreciated in the high July temperatures! Make sure you also check out the small production Torbato from Sella & Mosca. The blush style rose from Capichera stood out. Onto the reds the elegant Korem is made from the bobal grape. The Pala S'Arai 2010 was an absolute stunner and also at perfect maturity. The Giuseppe Sedilesu Grassia Riserva Cannonau di Sardegna 2017 was an absolutely massive 16.5% Grenache 💪. Main producers to look out for are Argiolas, Sella & Mosca, Pala and Capichera but loads of great wines to explore.

M Chapoutier, Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, 2018. A sweet fortified Muscat wine from the Rhone valley. The wines are created through the traditional process of mutage, to produce a vin doux naturel. Essentially alcohol is added to stop fermentation and preserve the natural sugars. Lots of peach, apricot, candied orange peel, honeysuckle and floral blossom. Try it with fruit or chocolate based desserts.
