We have been trying to organise a dinner with Pfalz producer Weingut Knipser for years but last night was finally it! Tom Benns was on sparkling form as he presented these superb German wines to a sell out at the excellent Clayton's Kitchen in Bath.
Some epic food and wine matches included Marsannier with local cheeses, and the Mandelpfad Riesling with an excellent duck dish.

We've been enjoying getting to know some of our South African producers and opening the wines to taste in our shop. Today (Friday 20th) and tomorrow (Sat 21st) it's the turn of the excellent wines from Thelema in Stellenbosch. Long term favourites of the team here, these wines are brilliantly made by Thomas Webb and his Team. Thomas is pictured here with his dad, Gyles Webb who founded Thelema. Drop into the shop and taste the wines, and hopefully see why we love them so much.

New Wine for us - A working farm in the heart of South Africa’s Cape Winelands, Babylonstoren embodies a unhurried lifestyle and keep things as simple as possible. Quality and craftsmanship are at the heart of everything they do. Every item they create is a labour of love straight from the farm.
Across their 122 hectares of vineyard are various soil types and altitudes, the different terroirs lending their unique character to the 13 grape varietals. We're thrilled to stock four of these farm favourites, bringing the refined taste of the Franschhoek wine valley straight to your door.
~~~We have these excellent wines open in our Bath shop this Friday 6th and Saturday 7th Sept, pop in and have a taste~~~
Tom King didn't take much persuading to attend a recent tasting lunch with Jean Trimbach. A chance to try Jean's sublime wines, to spend time conversing with Jean, or to dine at Henry's would all be reasons for a very positive RSVP. Read Tom's blog 'stories' piece on these wines with this man at that restaurant! See link in bio
A little history
"Great Western Wine" was founded in 1983 by Philip Addis, primarily to sell wines to the local Bath on trade, before enquiries from his friends encouraged the opening of a shop selling the small wine producers imported, alongside increasingly bigger and more international wineries.
Following positive growth, both Fine Wine and Private Customer teams developed, consolidating a strong and loyal customer base across the South West and beyond. The sale of Great Western Wine in 2010 to Enotria Winecellars (later Enotria&Coe) saw Great Western Wine become a 100% business-to-consumer retailer.
In June 2020, we renamed ourselves The Great Wine Co. to reflect how we have grown beyond our traditional West Country base. Although Bath is our home, we sell more wine online than any other way, with customers up and down the UK.
This new name emphasises our greatest asset: the wineries that we represent all around the world. Our core brand values remain rooted in the quality of our portfolio of wines; in celebrating the personalities that sit behind them; and in reflecting everyone's individual tastes to recommend the right wine for each customer.
