Baslow Village Shop & Post Office

Baslow Village Shop & Post Office Village shopping is often regarded as lost forever. but curiously in Baslow it still thrives. Find out why. NOTE.

If you refer to the map to locate our shop - the map is wrong but cannot be altered. The shop is situated at the junction of Over Lane (not Over Road) with School Lane. This profile will show you all about Baslow village shop and Post Office. The shop trades under the SPAR brand but is entirely owned and run by the Upton family - husband and wife Christine & David and their son David and daughter

Emily. Other staff* work alongside the family who have owned the business since 2003.

*(Note added January 2021).
2020 proved to be a very difficult year for us as a business. In 2003 when we took the business on, it was the only shop serving quite a wide area but by 2020, with increased competition, trade had really slumped to the point where by early 2020 we realised we could not go on any longer and with much regret, we announced to the community that we would be selling-up. Our wonderful staff were let go, and as a family of four, we proposed to keep the shop and Post Office going until such time as the business/site sold - we assumed by the summer. Then something totally unexpected happened and Coronavirus arrived in the UK. We were then asked if we could provide a delivery service to all the residents who would soon be self isolating? How could we with just four left to run the business? The solution was very swiftly found in a small army of local volunteers who came forward and began taking orders out on our behalf. We went from calling it a day to working flat-out virtually overnight. Almost exactly 12 months later (late Jan 2021), things are much calmer now. We deliver still to several customers, but can manage to do so ourselves and do so in our own distinctive delivery van. We will however be eternally grateful to all those who volunteered to help when the need arose and to all those who have continued to use the shop and thus make it viable for us to continue for the foreseeable future. Here is some of the shop's history:
The shop business started life in the late 1930s in the kitchen of the cottage beside the shop. That business grew to a point where it became necessary to take over the front room in which a counter was built just inside the front door. Any more than three customers, and others had to queue on the garden path. As the business continued to grow, it was eventually decided a purpose-built shop was the answer and so in the late 1950s the cottage garden was cleared and an outbuilding demolished to make room for the new building. This went up in the very early 1960s but was almost immediately recognised as being too small and so 2/3 years later the building was doubled in size to what we have today. The shop served the community well and survived while others - curiously situated on the main road through the village passed away. By 2002 the elderly lady owner knew it was time to step down and so the business was put on the market at which point Christine and David showed an interest and eventually went on to purchase the business and site which includes the cottage in which the business was first started. Today this cottage is a very popular two bedroomed holiday cottage.

Here is the latest update on the Severn Trent Water works on Eaton Hill. It's obvious something has slowed the work down and it would now appear they will be in place until the 27th of the month.

It's a rather special day for us here at the shop. 21 years ago today we reopened the shop, completely refurbished and restocked.
Look at the no-expense-spared advert Spar supplied for the window!
Looking through our memorabilia file, see also a similar advert used by the Hawley's, when they too first opened the shop in the 1960s.
When youu consider that back in June our situation was once again very serious indeed, it's a thrill to know we have somehow come through the storm again.
This has been largely due to the tremendous efforts of customers who have rallied round and like us, refused to let the business die. Thankyou one and all. Let's see if we can make it into 2025?

I gather both School Lane and Eaton Hill have been blocked off with cones because the pothole repair team are working near the shop. Pretty outrageous and unthinking.
The cones can be ignored on School Lane and you can still get to the shop which is open - just.

Look what we have managed to get in again...get your butter knife out!

Perfect day for wrapping up, having a walk and topping off with a great hot chocolate on the shop front.

A message for the local Holiday Cottage Owners, who have been purchasing vouchers from us at the shop, to put in their cottage Welcome packs-

These have been coming back to us and have been very well recieved.
It is also a great way for people to choose their own items, especially if they have any intolerance etc, that you wouldn't be aware of.

We have plenty of vouchers available if you need to re stock, or if you're new to hearing about this idea and want to join many of the other local holiday cottages in supporting us here at Baslow Village Shop & Post Office.
😁🏑

Many Thanks for the support!

The other week we were approached by Steve Caddy, editor of PURE Peak magazine. He had become aware of our appeal for more custom within the shop and wondered if we would like to be featured in the magazine. It was a kind offer we could not turn-down.
The magazine is now out and if you would like to read Steve's article, we have a number of the magazines in the shop.

Thousands of fans turned out eagerly yesterday to watch Oasis play live, only to be left shocked and furious to discover what they had just spent their Β£200 ticket money on!

The 'gig' involved a meet and greet with the duo and an opportunity to take a selfie with them.

One Angry fan who was left reeling, said
'I am just totally gobsmacked by the whole thing!
I am still recovering from the horrific shock we had, when we went to the the W***y Wonka Experience! I just can't believe I have been so mislead...again!'

Another man was left broken, after he'd spent the same amount of money on a ticket that was intended to be used for his kids Christmas presents!
'I just feel totally and utterly duped! I thought I was paying to see Liam and Noel play live. How am I going to explain this to my wife!'

No luck has been had yet trying to contact the ticket company.
The number only takes you through to what sounds like someone having a nice long refreshing drink at the end of the line!..More on this story later.

Please be aware that the phones and Internet are all over the place (in parts of Baslow at least). We currently have no phones in the shop, even if it rings and sounds normal at your end. If you need to call, try 0790 1626944.

New developments.

We now have handouts which aim to introduce the shop and Post Office. We are looking into getting them distributed around the village but meantime, you can pick up a copy in the shop. When read, please consider passing it on to someone who might like a copy.

The other development is based on a suggestion we have been given. If you have a local holiday property, we know that several of you make mention of the shop in your information folders, and we do appreciate this. We now have Β£5 vouchers which can be purchased and left with your welcome pack, so that your guests can then spend them in the shop.
The vouchers are also available to anyone who might wish to purchase one.
