Corney & Barrow Ayr Wine Shop

Corney & Barrow Ayr Wine Shop In 1994, Corney & Barrow’s Scottish operation merged with Whighams of Ayr, one of the longest-established wine merchants in the UK.

Set up by a group of prominent Ayrshire merchants and landowners in 1766, Whighams traditionally supplied fine wines and spirits to many of the great houses and estates in southern Scotland. Whighams has occupied the current residence in Academy Street in Ayr, for much of the 243 years of its existence. Robert Burns is thought to have visited the cellars in his role as excise man for the area in t

he late 1780s. The 1766-built cellars were constructed for the sole purpose of storing imported wines, ports and sherries shipped on the company-built vessels, which plied their trade around Europe. These cellars are very much still in use today for long-term customer reserve storage.

mcgregor + reid's third tasty Scottish Cheese of the Month is Traditional Ayrshire Dunlop. Each cheese is wrapped in cloth, allowing it to mature slowly for a minimum of 6 months. With every mouthful of Dunlop you'll discover buttery, tangy and earthy flavours complemented by it's creamy texture. Traditional Ayrshire Dunlop was awarded PGI status in 2015, firmly cementing it's place as a fixture in Scottish cheese making history.

And to match this cheese, we have picked Flor de Cardon Malbec (£16.50). The grapes are grown 1,800 meters above sea level in the remote wine region of Salta, a mountainous desert in north-west Argentina. With a year in old French oak, Flor de Cardón is a dark and silky Malbec, with smooth tannins, boasting pureed blackberries, an olive note and mineral length.

mcgregor + reid's second tasty Scottish Cheese of the Month is Connage Organic Clava, which originates from the Connage Highland Dairy, Ardersier, Inverness. A hand ladled and handcrafted Scottish Brie, it is named after pre- historic burial cairns just a few miles from the farm. Clava has a silky, smooth texture which only becomes more soft and luscious as it ripens. With its robust and earthy flavours, Clava is a must for any cheeseboard this Burns night. Pair simply with a little drizzle of honey, accompanied by peaches, figs or plums.

And to match this cheese, we have picked Saint-Veran ‘Les Chatenays (£19.95). This wine is made from 100% Chardonnay and hails from the southern part of Burgundy. Flavours of citrus fruits, ripe apples and white flowers, with fresh acidity, and a creamy texture from lees aging.

Stay tuned for another cheese and wine recommendation next week!

Is there a better start to the New Year than with wine and cheese? Of course not!

mcgregor + reid are highlighting Scottish cheese throughout January, starting off with Arran Blue. This cheese is made using the milk of the islands dairy herd. Semi soft in texture, the flavours can vary depending on the age of the cheese, from creamy and slightly salty when young to 'tangy' as it matures. Delicious served with apple or pear on an oatcake.

And as we are not quite ready to say goodbye to sherry season just yet, we have picked Lustau San Emilio Pedro Ximenez to accompany this delicious Scottish cheese. This sweet sherry is a perfect match for the tangy saltiness of blue cheese. To make this wine, grapes are laid out in the sun after picking until they raisin.
Enormously sweet, velvety and soft on the palate, well balanced, with flavours of figs, raisins and dates. Available in full and half bottles.

Stay tuned for more cheese and wine recommendations throughout the month of January!
