In 1994, Corney & Barrow’s Scottish operation merged with Whighams of Ayr, one of the longest-established wine merchants in the UK.

Set up by a group of prominent Ayrshire merchants and landowners in 1766, Whighams traditionally supplied fine wines and spirits to many of the great houses and estates in southern Scotland. Whighams has occupied the current residence in Academy Street in Ayr, for much of the 243 years of its existence. Robert Burns is thought to have visited the cellars in his role as excise man for the area in t

he late 1780s. The 1766-built cellars were constructed for the sole purpose of storing imported wines, ports and sherries shipped on the company-built vessels, which plied their trade around Europe. These cellars are very much still in use today for long-term customer reserve storage.

Hello everyone, we are so sorry, but we will be unable to open the shop today at 10am. The roads in and around Glasgow are unsafe due to heavy snow so Barry and Katie cannot make it to Ayr. If the weather improves, we will try and open later this afternoon. Bubbles & Bees - A Very Special Tasting with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and Charles & Wendy Outhwaite of Ambriel Sparkling.

We are delighted share the details of an exclusive wine tasting in our historic Ayr cellars in support of The Bumblebee Conservation Trust, an organisation we are proud to be a business member of.

This special evening will be hosted by renowned English sparkling winemakers Charles & Wendy Outhwaite, alongside Gill Perkins, CEO of The Bumblebee Conservation Trust.

You will taste the amazing sparkling wines from the Ambriel range; a selection curated to support the Trust's important work and celebrate the beginning of the festive season. We will also have some "bee friendly" grazing boards for you to nibble!

By attending, you’ll also be directly contributing to the work of The Bumblebee Conservation Trust while enjoying some of the delicious wines we offer.

mcgregor + reid's Cheese of the Month for November is Appenzeller. Hailing from the Appenzell region of Switzerland, this cheese is aged for a minimum of 6 months. During this time it is washed with a mysterious brine made from a mix of locally sourced herbs. This process imparts the cheese with an extra spicy and robust flavour and a very distinctive full aroma.

To match this delicious cheese, we have selected Lonely Vineyard Riesling from Australia (£19.50). While you might not associate this grape with Australia, the Eden Valley if famous for it's bone dry, zingy Rieslings. This one is tight, with concentrated floral and mineral characters and a powerful acid backbone.

Wine and Cheese of the Month - October.

mcgregor + reid's Cheese of the Month for October is Murcia al Vino. Hailing from the Murcia region in South East Spain, this artisanal cheese is made from pasteurised goats milk immersed in red wine. The wine imparts a rich colour and fruity flavour to the rind of the cheese, while the the semi-firm interior holds onto it's creamy white appearance.

To match this delicious cheese, we have selected Salterio Mencia DO Bierzo (£11.95), from the heart of the Bierzo region, a lush and fertile enclave of Castilla y León. Dense with a rounded texture, Salterio displays concentrated flavours of sweet and savoury cherry, complimented by light floral notes and lingering freshness. And if you are feeling adventurous, you can even serve this wine slightly chilled!

Wine and Cheese of the Month - September.

mcgregor + reid Cheese of the Month for September is Valdeon Picos Blue. Hailing from the Europa Mountains of Spain, this cheese boasts a collaboration of cow's and goat's milk. Cured in the caves and wrapped in maple leaves, it is a strong, spicy blue that's full of character

To match this delicious cheese, we felt something sweet would compliment that spicy character perfectly, so we have gone for Joostenberg Estate Noble Late Harvest Chenin Blanc (South Africa). Beautiful golden straw in colour, the nose and palate are characterised by caramelised apple, pineappple and honeycomb - the sweetness balanced by a lingering fresh acidity.

And the good news is we have both the cheese and wine available to sample in our shop! See you soon 😉

Wine and Cheese of the Month - August.

mcgregor + reid's Cheese of the Month for August is Prima Donna, a sweet and nutty cheese with crystal crunches hailing from the Netherlands. In style, it is like a cross between Gouda and Parmesan.

To match this delicious cheese, we have picked Lucas Cabernet Sauvignon (£15.95) from Valle de Colchagua in Chile. Rich and intensely fruity, with crunchy tannins, this wine is matured in French oak for 10 months. It is rich and intensely fruity, with a long, smoky finish.

On Tuesday night we were at Wellingtonhouseonthesquare sharing our incredible new Argentinian range with a group of eager tasters. As well as sampling the wines, guests also enjoyed a Smokehouse Argentine BBQ, despite the truly torrential rain!

Thank you so much to the producers for coming to Scotland, and sharing their amazing wines with us. It was fascinating to see the variety and quality of the wines coming out of Argentina.

Wine and Cheese of the Month, featuring a very hopeful spaniel!

mcgregor + reid's Cheese of the Month for July is Ossau Iraty, a semi-hard sheep's cheese from the south-west of France, near the Spanish border. Sweet, nutty, and slightly tangy.

To match this delicious cheese, we have picked a wine that is also from south-west France, L'Empreinte de Saint Mont Blanc (£15.95). It is made from the local grape varieties Gros Manseng, Petit Courbu and Arrufiac. Displaying honeysuckle on the nose, the wine is rich in the mouth with ripe tropical fruit, a honeyed touch and refreshing lime zest on the finish. A versatile wine with a great depth.

Last Saturday we had the honour of attending an exceptional Champagne dinner at Cail Bruich. Guests were treated to a Caviar Sturia tasting, followed by a beautiful multi course menu created by Head Chef Lorna McNee. Each course was matched to the wines of Maison Champagne Salon and Maison Champagne Delamotte. Salon and Delamotte export director Cristian Rimoldi was also in attendance to share his extensive knowledge and passion with guests. Thank you to everyone involved, it was a truly exceptional evening.

REAWAKENING ARGENTINA: An exclusive Argentinian tasting and barbecue at Wellington House on Tuesday 9th July 2024.

The vast and varied landscape of Argentina is the backdrop to a new wave of winemakers on a mission to push the limits of their country’s viticultural potential.

In light of this, our buying team set out to find producers in the vanguard of this movement – those exploring extreme terroirs, resurrecting abandoned vineyards, reinterpreting classic styles, challenging preconceptions.

Having signed four leading wineries, we are thrilled to have all founder-winemakers with us for this one-off event. A rare opportunity to meet:

Manuel Ferrer – ‘Finca Medialuna’
Andrea Marchiori – ‘Marchiori & Barraud’
Manuel Michelini – ‘Michelini i Mufatto’
Alejandro Sejanovich – ‘Milsuelos’

All of their wines will be served alongside a traditional ‘asado’ (Argentine BBQ), created by Smokehouse.
