Corney & Barrow Ayr Wine Shop

Corney & Barrow Ayr Wine Shop In 1994, Corney & Barrow’s Scottish operation merged with Whighams of Ayr, one of the longest-established wine merchants in the UK.

Set up by a group of prominent Ayrshire merchants and landowners in 1766, Whighams traditionally supplied fine wines and spirits to many of the great houses and estates in southern Scotland. Whighams has occupied the current residence in Academy Street in Ayr, for much of the 243 years of its existence. Robert Burns is thought to have visited the cellars in his role as excise man for the area in t

he late 1780s. The 1766-built cellars were constructed for the sole purpose of storing imported wines, ports and sherries shipped on the company-built vessels, which plied their trade around Europe. These cellars are very much still in use today for long-term customer reserve storage.

mcgregor + reid's Cheese of the Month for July is Smoked Gubbeen. From Schull in West Cork, Smoked Gubbeen is a washed rind cheese with a delicate smoky flavour, combined with characteristic notes of mushroom and nuts, with a creamy and buttery texture.

To match this delicious cheese, we have selected Gewurztraminer Beblenheim Domaine Trapet. This wine comes from Alsace, a beautiful region sandwiched between the Vosges mountains and the River Rhine. It is made from 100% Gewürztraminer, an aromatic grape variety with pink skins. The grape’s name is derived from the German word “Gewürz,” which means “spice,” reflecting its exotic character. Aromas of roses, apricots and Turkish Delight – distinctively Gewurztraminer, rendered elegantly. The palate is fleshy, with almost chewable stone-fruit, followed by a firm acid backbone and stony minerality.

As always, you can find the wine here at Corney & Barrow Ayr Wine Shop, and head to Mcgregor + Reid on Newmarket Street to grab the cheese!

mcgregor + reid's Cheese of the Month for June is Baron Bigod. This cheese is made in Bungay, Suffolk, by third-generation farmers Jonny and Dulcie Crickmore and is the only traditional Brie de Meaux style cheese produced in the UK. The result is a rich and earthy cheese with notes of citrus and truffle.

To match this delicious cheese, we have selected Giulia Negri Langhe Nebbiolo, which hails from the Piedmont region in Northern Italy and is made from 100% Nebbiolo. This is an elegant red, with lifted red cherry and wild strawberry notes and just a touch of dried fruit on the nose. The palate manages to perfectly balance soft tannins with a fresh line of acidity.

As always, you can find the wine here at Corney & Barrow Ayr Wine Shop. And head to Mcgregor + Reid on Newmarket Street to grab the cheese!

mcgregor + reid's Cheese of the Month for May is Grand Noir. Produced in Laube Allgau (Bavaria) by the Kaserei Champignon company, Grand Noir is an exceptional blue cheese known for its distinct appearance and refined flavour profile. Each cheese is hand-dipped, encased in black wax and aged for a minimum of 8 weeks, developing a creamy texture and rich, intense flavours. Beautifully marbled with blue and green veins, offering a harmonious blend of sharp, tangy notes, a subtle sweetness and a buttery finish that lingers on the palate.

To match this delicious cheese, we have selected Nelson Vineyards Rosé, which hails from the Paarl region of South Africa and is made from 100% Petit Verdot. Soft, baby pink in colour with a pretty, perfumed nose showing notes of red berries and cream. The palate is well balanced with fresh ripe fruit, a creamy texture and good structure.

As always, you can find the wine here at Corney & Barrow Ayr Wine Shop. And head to Mcgregor + Reid on Newmarket Street to grab the cheese!

mcgregor + reid's Cheese of the Month for April is Montgomery's Cheddar, which has been made by the Montgomery family in South Somerset for three generations. Set using 'pint starters' rather than powders, which creates variations in flavour from one day to the next, giving the cheese its individual character and complexity. This cloth-bound cheddar is then allowed to mature for a minimum of 14 months. The resulting cheese has a supreme depth of flavour, rich, nutty, savoury and gloriously golden.

To match this delicious cheese, we have selected 'Soraie', an innovative project, aiming to put a new spin on the traditional winemaking technique called 'appassimento', which is used to make the famous Amarone wines of Italy's Veneto region. Rich, velvety and round on the palate, with flavours of black plums, black cherry, vanilla and a moreish chocolatey finish (£14.50).

As always, you can find the wine here at Corney & Barrow Ayr Wine Shop. And head to Mcgregor + Reid on Newmarket Street to grab the cheese!
