Situated in the heart of Alston, we are a Workers’ Co-operative dedicated to supplying quality products at reasonable prices. Our aims are to support local producers, reduce food miles and support Fair Trade. We are always happy to source hard-to-get ingredients, and as we order on a weekly basis, we can usually supply you within

a week of your order. We can make up hampers to your requirements, and also sell gift vouchers. We stock a wide range of wholefoods – organic and fairly traded wherever possible – over 40 varieties of local cheese, delicatessen items and our range of items for special diets includes gluten free breakfast cereals, biscuits, crackers, pasta, ice creams, chocolate, snacks, sauces and jams. Local products include Cumberland Mustard and Moorlands Candles – both made in Alston; bacon and Cumberland sausage from Slacks; jams and pickles from The Cane Workshop (Alston), Wild and Fruitful, Claire’s Handmade and Friendly Food and Drink; soaps and lotions from Alnwick Apothecary and Chain Bridge Honey Farm; Indian sauces and chutneys from Mr. Vikki's; ice creams and sorbets from Cream o’ Galloway and Doddington Farm; flours from The Watermill, Warwick Mill and Gilchester Farm; oils and condiments from Uncle Roys; soft drinks from Fentimans; fruit cordials from Thorncroft; honey from Chain Bridge, Northumbrian Honey and South Durham Honey. Our local cow, goat and sheep cheeses come from Thornby Moor Dairy, Appleby Creamery, Doddington Dairy, Birdoswald, Northumberland Cheese Company, Weardale Cheese Company and Cotherstone Dairy. We also stock a variety of premium cheddars, Stilton, Wensleydale, Cheshire, Parmesan, Manchego, Swiss Gruyère, Jarlsberg, buffalo mozzarella, feta and haloumi. Other products include organic yoghurt from Slack House Farm, goats’ milk, cream and butter; dried herbs and spices sold by weight; organic and herbal teas; single variety coffees; a selection of non-dairy milks and ice creams; an extensive range of Far Eastern products; chocolate and snacks; vegetarian and vegan products; fruit juices and soft drinks; and a selection of fresh seasonal herbs and spices. Our main suppliers deliver on Mondays and Thursdays, with orders taken up until 2pm on Tuesdays; other suppliers deliver fortnightly. You can order by phone, e-mail or in person at the shop, where our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be happy to help you to find an ingredient or product.

Muckle Brewing beers made in Haltwhitle are selling very well at Alston Wholefoods. We also have gift packs of three beers available.

The larch clad brewery building replaced a former garden shed and was originally planned to be a sunroom with space for Tom’s home-brew kit in the corner however, as the building progressed it became apparent from the existence of only a single window that Tom had deviated from the brief! Out went the soft furnishings to be replaced by a 1.3 barrel brew kit which was then upgraded to 2.5 barrels in 2022.

Muckle Brewing beers are bottled by hand using a gravity fed system before being conditioned in the warm brewery building for two weeks. Next is labelling using a hand wound system before boxing up in reused and recyclable cardboard with paper tape. We are proud of our low beer miles footprint with transport kept to a minimum. The Muckle Brewing campervan is loaded direct from our cold store and off to the Northumberland Farmers Markets”
