Very sad news and a true community champion.

The Death of Simon Welfare
It is with great sadness that Cromar Community Council informs you of the death of its Chairman, Simon Welfare this morning, the 12th December.

Simon was taken ill suddenly on Monday of this week and was admitted by emergency ambulance from his home in Tarland to hospital in Aberdeen. He suffered internal bleeding and upon investigation was diagnosed with an advanced and untreatable cancer.

Simon Welfare had been Chairman of Cromar Community Council for seventeen years. Throughout his years of association with the Community Council, and as its Chairman, he was a most committed servant of our community.

He diligently represented the views of Cromar residents to Aberdeenshire Council on issues as diverse as a path for the school children at Logie Coldstone, the repair of the tarmac in Tarland Square, and most recently the Cromar Resilience Plan.

He organised the local Diamond and Platinum Royal Jubilee Celebrations in 2012 and 2022 and during the covid crisis, was instrumental in the setting up and running of Cromar Community Help.

Following a long career as a television producer and author, Simon became an accomplished researcher on local history. He contributed to many of the local groups and societies with entertaining talks often featuring the history of our area.

We express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Mary, his wife and all the family at this time of loss and sorrow.

David Ellis,
Secretary Cromar Community Council
