Thank’s Martin! Althaia it’s a good one Spanish beer!
Althaia Mediterranean IPA Sin Alcool 0.6%
This is a beer from brewed close to Alicante in Spain. I sourced it from the good people at . On the label, this beer is marked as containing less than one percent alcohol ABV, and a wider Internet searching reveals this to be 0.6 % alcohol ABV. This is higher than my self imposed 0.5% drinking limit, so this one is a taste and spit for me. As an aside this highlights how labelling rules for alcohol free beer differ even within the EU, with France and Spain being outliers on how strong “alcohol free” can be. Fortunately the 0.5% is so widely applied and accepted for export, that this is becoming the de facto standard even before local legislation eventually catches up.
This was one of the trickier beers to pour I have ever encountered. The foamy glass of beer you see was the result of at least 10 minutes of pouring and settling, such was the extreme fizz of this one.
This pours a hazy, slightly orange, mid gold colour, with an astringent slightly citrusy nose. That initial dollop of thick foamy head does eventually subside to a more standard collar which laces the glass nicely.
This has a pronounced bitterness first of all which has some real grip to it and this is enough bitterness to support an ambitious flavour profile on the body, however, that ambition is never fulfilled. The lightly fruity, dry marmalade note of the body doesn’t impose itself for very long before an astringent slightly soapy finish takes over.
This for me is close to a West Coast IPA in style, I haven’t had enough Mediterranean IPAs to consider that a reference point. This is an OK if unremarkable beer, especially when compared to a beer style, which is now incredibly well represented with IPAs from all over the world. If i found this to drink locally to Alicante (and it were just a touch lower in abv) I am sure I would be delighted. It has a lot more character than most local alcohol free brews, but taken out of its home environment the competition is a different thing entirely.
