25.000 Pencils
25,000 Pencils explores collaborative design through making. It will take the form of a 1:1 installation made with colour pencils connected through simple means (a toric rubber joint). 240 architecture students from Cardiff (WSA) and Barcelona (ETSAB) will be accompanied by 10 tutors in the production of the installation at the MUHBA Oliva Artés in Barcelona. Each of the 250 participants will be adding 100 pencils to the installation. There will be no masterplan in the design and only simple instructions will be given to participants in terms of how to connect one pencil to another. The emerging design will grow as a collective endeavor that will challenge our preconceptions about what it means to collaborate. Design, in this instance, will emerge through the qualities of collective action.
