China's coffee industry is experiencing rapid growth. During the 12 months of 2023, the number of branded coffee increased by as much as 58 percent, according to the latest report published by the British organization Allegra World Coffee Portal.
In the development of this business, which expects to collect 369,300 million yuan by 2025, the Colombian coffee industry, which has been one of the driving forces in the production for Chinese companies, has been involved.

In January 2024, coffee production in Colombia had a growth of 11% compared to the same month of 2023, reaching 959,000 bags, which meant an improvement of 91,000 bags.

This was announced in the latest report of the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia (FNC) corresponding to the first month of this year.

The coffee association highlighted that the accumulated production for the 12 months -between February 2023 and January 2024- was of 11.43 million 60 Kg bags, which represented a growth of 3%, with a result that improved by 355,000 bags.

We visited Rwanda.
Rwanda is a fairly small country with a population of 11 million and most of them are employed in agriculture.
Coffee is an important cash crop here and the fertile soil, terraced hills and temperate climate are conducive to coffee growing.
We were able to observe the differences and similarities between their processes and ours, which will allow us to improve our processes and encourage improvements in our allies farms.

Despite its smaller market size, specialty coffee consumption is gaining ground in many countries.
According to data from the ICO, global consumption is expected to grow by 1.7% to reach 178.5 million 60kg bags in 2022/23.
Although the global specialty coffee market is much smaller in comparison, data shows that its consumption is growing at a faster rate than that of conventional coffee.
The North American specialty coffee market is expected to grow 20% annually through 2030.
Europe currently has the largest share of the global specialty coffee market at around 46.2%. It is expected to grow 9% by 2026.
The Asia-Pacific market, for its part, is growing rapidly. According to Research and Markets, the region's specialty coffee sector will experience an annual growth rate of 15.3% between now and 2030.

The World Barista Championship has long been a platform to showcase some of the world’s most interesting and unique coffees. Looking at these coffees in particular, one of the most noticeable trends is that many are sourced from Colombia. As well as producing high-quality varieties, a growing number of Colombian coffee farmers have started to use more experimental processing methods to enhance sensory profiles even further.
Looking at World Barista Championships over the past few years, there have been many notable competitors who used Colombian coffees.

The El Diviso farm is a farm with an area of 4 hectares in which I decided to plant different specialty varieties to find differentiated coffees for the world market.
I aspire to be able to promote coffee growing in my region, creating a differential coffee for the international market, and together with allies and family, we have decided to create a place of rest and knowledge of the Colombian coffee culture on the El Diviso farm.

Latin Coffee was present at the seventh edition of the Producer & Roaster Forum held between the 14th and 15th of this month in Medellín (Co).
An event where Roasters, Exhibitors, Speakers, and the general public met to exchange knowledge, learn about new trends in production and innovation, and create new business relationships.
All of the above with the aim of continuing to grow the coffee industry.

Fermentation processes and their application to benefit the grain have been a focus of work in coffee research in recent decades. In this way, it has been possible to develop processes such as carbonic maceration, culturing, thermal shock, grain freezing, and prolonged or multiple fermentations.
One of the methods that has earned a place among the processes most used by specialty coffee producers is prolonged fermentation.
Controlled fermentation carried out over long periods of time has become, like other biotransformation processes, one of the possibilities that coffee growers have found in their objective of adding value to their crops and generating differentiated coffees.

I am the third generation of a coffee family. My upbringing has been a coffee maker all my life. I thank my dad for teaching me the value of life and the effort for the countryside, our land, and the coffee.
With my wife, I bought 3 hectares of forest, We were decided to call this land Kaizen because of its meaning, which in Asian culture is CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT.
In 2018, the planting of 2 varieties began, the Geisha variety and the Colombia Tambo variety, thanks to an aunt who gave me the Geisha variety seed.
When the land was purchased, it did not have water sources, however, over time, a small spring was discovered inside the farm. We decided to protect it, take care of it, and plant trees for its care. Today that small spring is our water source.
And so, we continue in our continuous improvement, always highlighting the great work of the collectors, who have great importance in the quality of our coffee.
With Kaizen, we hope to be recognized for the hard dedication and effort invested in having the best quality cup of Colombian coffee.

The Café Show China 2023 fair held in Shanghai this weekend ended with great success.
Our coffees from origins such as Huila, Cauca and Nariño were widely accepted by the public, around 40,000 people throughout the event.

Henry is natives of the place known as Emaus in Palestina, Huila.
He has always been surrounded by coffee in that area. Coffee is his main economic entry.
The farm that he owns, one part is inherited from his parents and the other was buy with a lot of family effort.
In 2018, Henry's grandfather asked to him, for manage the farm, He looked for ways to improve it and start growing new varieties such as Maracaturra and pink bourbon as coffee growers in the area recommended them to, he due to their good acceptance in the international market.
His dream is that the end customer can feel in each bean all the coffeegrowing in our region, the hard work he does, and the love he feels for coffee.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) decreed in the first days of July 2023 the beginning of the El Niño phenomenon.
Thus, it confirmed the predictions that gave a high probability, almost 60%, of the appearance of this phenomenon in the second half of the year.
The coffee industry is waiting for the impact that El Niño brings for the current production and the following harvests.
The impact of this type of phenomenon is increasingly complex and is intertwined with the particular characteristics of coffee production areas.
Beyond the difficulty or usefulness of predicting them, the need to develop strategies to deal with their effects is recognized.
We must bet on production systems that allow ecosystems to have tools to recover.
In this context, tools such as regenerative agriculture or organic coffee farming are configured as some of the most effective possibilities.

Las Palmas Farm is an inheritance that Mrs. Adriana received in 2002.
At that time, the farm had coffees planted with the Colombia, Típicas, and Caturro varieties.
Over time, they were transforming the crop, changing traditional coffees for varietal and high-quality coffees. They standardized the farm's coffees, and in 2013 they formed an associative group to develop the entire coffee production chain in the area, from harvest to the review of the quality of each grain and its subsequent commercialization.
The group's objective was to make coffee profitable, implement new forms of production, equipment for the benefit and quality control of coffee, and create a high quality coffee with a better price in the market.
Mrs. Adriana's goal is to participate in international competitions and for her coffee to position itself at the top of differentiated or specialty coffees, creating a lasting relationship with her allies and clients.

Forty-five years ago, Alonso inherited the land from his father, and he likes it.

Olsenel is the second generation of a coffee-growing family. He bought the farm in 2017 and he found Castillo and Colombia coffee varieties in that. He decided to eradicate those varieties and plant a differentiated coffee.
At the moment, he have 16,000 trees of Geisha and 10,000 of Pink Bourbon, all are new and producing the quality he wanted.
He is organizing the dryer and the processing plant to make his coffees of great pleasure and good quality for the clients. His goal is that his consumers recognize the work that he does daily and that they can receive excellent coffee in their cups.

n 2014, Jaiver bought a hectare of land in the municipality of Pitalito Huila, a village in Brussels, known as Finca el Cedro at an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level.
The first thing he did was clean it up and leave the land suitable for cultivation.
With information from people in the area, he learned about the Geisha variety that could be grown in the climate where the land was located.
Behind a cup of Geisha coffee from the El Cedro farm, there are years of hard work and dedication.
Through the excellent quality harvesting, fermentation and processing processes that they carry out, Javier aspires to be recognized worldwide for the great flavor and the quality of his coffee.

Alexander is the second generation coffee maker in his family. He was a coffee picker on different farms in the region and thanks to perseverance and effort he bought 2 hectares of coffee over the course of 12 years he managed to form the 10-hectare La Piragua farm.
His greatest desire is to be able to transmit to his two children the importance of coffee growing and the care and dedication to produce an excellent cup of coffee.

Wilmer is the first coffee grower in the family. The wish to produce coffee with differentiated flavors that people can appreciate is one of his greatest goals.
Fifteen years ago he bought the coffee farm, to establish himself in the area and learn about coffee growing, better equipment was implemented for the coffee processing.
To position Tabí coffee abroad, where the attributes can be appreciated, and to obtain better prices is one of his greatest objectives, and with dedication and effort in each stage of the processing of the coffee he has been achieving it. In the coffee industry, creating and maintaining relationships between producers and roasters will always be a demanding path with many complications to overcome; however, it is a path that, if followed on the basis of mutual trust and honesty, can be rewarding and beneficial for both links in the production chain.
Just as a roaster or importer can help the coffee grower better understand the needs of the international market, innovate and improve their income, a producer is capable of teaching them all about the coffee culture that is hidden behind the production processes on the farm and that needs to be understood to develop more prosperous businesses.
Building long-term relationships benefits both growers and roasters as each can learn from and understand the other's work.
