Broadway Wine Review // Sea Star Vineyards Blanc de Noir //
As some of you might already know, we’ve always had a soft spot in our hearts for Pender Island. That’s where me and my wife, of the Broadway Wine Shop family—fell in love. Fast-forward 22 years, we now have a growing up way too fast son and one of our favourite BC wineries, Sea Star Estate Farm and Vineyards, from our beloved Pender Island has launched their 5th vintage!
We remember when we introduced their first vintage here at the shop. We had never seen a reception to a new winery like that before. That inaugural vintage of 2013 produced several award-winners and sold out in six months. So the next few years, Sea Star’s stellar line-up sold out again and again. They have now launched the 2017 vintage and in this video I share some of my thoughts about the Blanc de Noir.

Broadway Wine Review // Gut Oggau Love //
We love this wine! It’s the Gut Oggau Timotheus and it’s a natural orange wine made from a blend of Grüner Veltliner and Weissburgunder. Hope you enjoy the video and thank-you for watching. Please contact us to learn more or to snag one of the few remaining bottles!
Broadway Wine Review // Natural Wine Basics //
At the shop we’ve been getting more and more into Natural Wines and along with that we’ve had quite a few people ask “what’s all the fuss about?”
With this video I very quickly go over what is Natural Wine and introduce a series of videos that will go over the subject in more depth. Stay tuned for more!
Broadway Wine Review // ROSÉ! //
Phew! This week has been fun and it is a challenge to nail that one minute mark to work with IG!!! Thanks for the follows and DMs with love and encouragement. I plan to keep it up and to explore many different themes. Shoot me a DM if there is something you would like me to go over or if you have any ideas or suggestions. This is just the start!!!
With this video I quickly going over food pairing suggestions for different styles of rosé. Lighter, more medium bodied and sparkling rosé all bring different options to the table (pun intended)! With Spring upon us, this was a theme that was timely and appropriate.
Broadway Wine Review — Catherine et Pierre Breton, Grolleau 2016 — Loire, France
Here is my second review, and for this one I chose to do the Catherine et Pierre Breton, Grolleau 2016. It’s from the Loire Valley in France, from vineyards that were converted to Biodynamic back in the 1990s. This is also a natural wine that is non-intervention at any point, wild yeasts, open fermentation in neutral wood vats and no filtration when put into the bottle.
The colour is a ruby colour and it had a lot of wine crystals. The flavours reminded me of wild strawberries on a hot summer day. It has a touch of earthiness, a slight pepper note and a touch of green. This is definitely a food friendly wine. It would pair nicely with some pâté or goat cheese.
The Grolleau grape has seen not a whole lot of respect from some major wine writers, and is a difficult one to work with as it has thin skins. Historically it was used to make Rosé d’Anjou and when that fell out of popularity they suggested to rip it out and to replant those vineyards with Gamay or Cabernet Franc. Fortunately, not everyone listened to that advice so we still have a few wines being made from what is now a niche grape not planted outside of the Loire. I hope you enjoy this video, and “give Grolleau a go!”

After much prodding by friends and family, and many years of procrastination, I decided to just do it. My first wine review is up! It features the AA Alta Alella Private, 2016 Gx Garnatxa Negra (Garnache) from near Barcelona, Spain. It was filmed the day before our Spanish + Portugal wine tasting when we were making our selections. I felt a bit rusty with talking in front of a camera, but that’s OK, it’s a start. You know what they say, a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step!
My plan is to share with you my thoughts and to do quick, one minute wine reviews. They will be featuring wines that I am passionate about or even ones I am trying on a whim. I will share a bit about the makers, flavours and food pairing ideas. Now and then I’ll also talk about new finds, special events, new wine gadgets (I’m a gadget guy!), current affairs and behind-the-scenes drama!
A quick shout-out to Ben + Colleen for prodding me to finally bite the bullet, jump in and get one up! Done! 🙂

This is our ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video! Rosina Li lay down the challenge and the guys stepped up and have nominated Erin Chambers from Charton & Hobbs, Jesse Harnden from Perseus Winery, and Toni and Hayley from Hair Cats. You have 24 hours to complete the challenge or donate to www.als.ca...or do both!
We are doing this in honour of our extended Reid (Chris') family who lost their Mother/Grandmother in 2005 to ALS. It is a cause that is dear to our hearts.
It's been great to see family & friends of all ages from around the world participate in raising funds and awareness for this disease that has hit us, first hand, close to home.
This is Part 1 of completing the team challenge. The rest of us will do it on Friday. Stay tuned!
