A.J. Fernandez’s New World brand is named in honor of the discovery of to***co by the Christopher Columbus expedition in 1492. Fernandez collaborated with his father, Ismael, on the cigar, which is comprised of a wrapper from Nicaragua that covers binder from the Jalapa Valley and a filler blend of Ometepe, Condega and Estelí to***cos. The core line debuted in 2014, which was followed by New World Connecticut in 2015 and New World Puro Especial in 2017.

This powerful Nicaraguan puro was hand crafted by the celebrated master blender Sr. Omar Ortez at Esteli’s renowned Nicaragua-American To***co factory and reflects the time-honored traditions of pre-embargo Cuban cigar making. Dressed in a toothy, dark Nicaraguan wrapper, Omar Ortez Originals Maduro combines a bold mixture of Nicaraguan ligero long-leaf to***cos with a hearty Nicaraguan binder. The result is a nice balance of flavor and strength, a robust smoke that’s rich in character with satisfying flavors. Granted the stick is a little rustic looking with lots of veins, but note it’s firm and has a nice heft in the hand. Look for a draw that’s just right, an excellent burn and a nice aroma from beginning to end. The light grey ash won’t hold long, a minor flaw. Expect notes of cocoa and nuts. Enjoy this stogie after a hearty meal with a chocolate stout or your favorite cup of coffee. The Omar Ortez Originals received a nice rating of ’90’ points by Cigar Insider which commented: “Covered in a rich, dark wrapper, this toasty cigar is full of woody, leathery flavors punctuated by nutty, earthy notes before a sweet cocoa finish. Medium to full bodied”

The Quai D’Orsay brand was established in 1973 to cater primarily to the burgeoning French market. French consumers favored a lighter taste with a lighter wrapper, prompting Quai D’Orsay to introduce their Corona sticks with a Claro Claro wrapper. By the late 1980s, as trends shifted, the Corona Claro Claro was phased out in favor of the Corona Claro. All sizes of Quai D’Orsay sticks are meticulously hand-rolled in Cuba using a blend of leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region.

There are several speculations about the origin of the name Quai D’Orsay. One theory suggests it derives from the famous Parisian avenue of the same name, while another proposes it’s linked to the French Foreign Ministry situated on that avenue. The final theory connects the name to the headquarters of SEITA (La Societe Nationale d’Exploitation Industriel de Tabac et Allumettes), which is also on the same avenue.
