The Orange Shirt Day movement began in British Columbia in the early 2010s with a Survivor story where they recount being stripped of their brand new orange shirt on the first day at the residential school. Since then, Orange Shirt Day has opened the path to have meaningful conversations about the lasting effects of residential schools.

The day also works to reaffirm that Every Child Matters, even if they are adults now. Orange Shirt Day became the first real step towards reconciliation with regards to the legacy of residential schools.
