Galerie Annexe presents to you our newest exhibition in collaboration with OBAK, Inviting the Conflict. On view from August 31 to October 20, 2024.

Inviting the Conflict presents artistic confrontations with these darker emotional states, positioning art as a cathartic process, exploring how creative expression can navigate and potentially reconcile our pain. Featured works delve into sadness, loss, grief, insecurity, anxiety, vulnerability, and mortality, offering visual manifestations of the artists’ inner turmoil. As such, these works are emotional diaries,1 and raw expressions of hardship.

This exhibition was realized with the support and partnership of the Ottawa Black Art Kollective (OBAK).
Invitation au conflit présente une confrontation, par l’art, d’états émotionnels troubles, le processus créatif servant ici de catharsis.L’exposition explore l’expression créative comme moyen de faire reconnaître sa douleur, et parfois même de l’apaiser. Les œuvres à dans la tristesse, la peine, l’insécurité, l’anxiété, la vulnérabilité et la mortalité. Elles sont des manifestations visuelles du profond désarroi des artistes. Il s’agit de journaux d’émotions,1 d’un récit à vif des difficultés vécues.

“Claudia Gutierrez is an artist, culture worker and arts advocate whose practice has been deeply informed by residencies in Canada and Mexico. Her multidisciplinary practice has in recent years engaged with textiles, utilizing her training in embroidery, hand dying and sewing. Claudia’s work explores embroidery as a tool for abstraction to create a code switch in the role of her materials and her art form.”

I may not consciously incorporate these into my work, however, it surprises and uplifts me when an inspiration shows up in the form, composition and colour of each unique cuff."

Chantal's photo and video works deal with representation, identity, human condition and the relationship between the body and technology. Born in Val d’Or, Quebec, Canada. She currently lives and works in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Apart from her personal artistic journey, Chantal has been teaching at the University of Ottawa since 2005, where she received a BFA in Photography along with an MA in Art and Media Practice form the University of Westminster in London, U.K.”

Discover Susan Hodgson:

Susan Hodgson, owner and principal at design studio HODGSON, has been an artist of varying media since a young age. Having had instruction at Etobicoke School of the Arts, the AGO and from many of Toronto's talented artists, Susan has turned to pastel and printmaking as her two media's of choice.

"Susan's work has been selected for multiple juried exhibitions in Ottawa and her works hang in private homes in Ottawa and the surrounding region, Toronto and Montreal."

"Siobhan Arnott is a visual artist living in Ottawa, Canada. Her artworks are deeply personal and explore family narratives, travel and adventure, mental health, and the strenght of the human spirit with just a touch of whimsy along the way. Creating a new body of work for Siobhan is an evolutionary and iterative process. She collects ideas over time, often sketching or writing about them in an art journal. When one captures her imagination, she conducts background research on techniques, processes, and delves into art history, poetry, philosophy, inspirational works of other artists, and even the dictionary to find ways to bring a new concept to life."

"A full time artist and art instructor, Kate Green holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Toronto and an Art Certificate from Sheridan College.
