***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

Let's talk Christmas trees!

Are you team real tree or team artificial?!

Christmas trees were first seen in 16th Century Germany where, at Christmas time, people decorated fir trees with fruit and nuts and later on sweets, paper shapes, and candles.

Historians think the origins of this festive tradition may date back to the Romans and Ancient Egyptians, who used evergreen plants and garland as symbols of everlasting life!

At my house, we have an artificial tree, although growing up, I always had a real tree!

This is our tree filled with love - I would love to see yours!

SHOW US YOUR TREE!!!

🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

And drop us a vote for a real tree or artificial!

Tell us you're from a small town without telling us you're from a small town...

"The Store" - where you find all the essentials and candy, of course!

Our market stop in New Sarepta today took me down memory lane. The village where I went to school had a store, the one (and only) real "stop." But I loved going there, and my kids now have an affection for that cozy one room shop that has a little bit of everything!

Who's been enjoying an advent calendar at home?! 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️

***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

Have you ever wondered how the tradition of opening a little door to reveal a Christmas shaped chocolate to count down the days to Christmas Eve started?!

The advent calendar tradition dates back to the mid-19th century when German Protestants made chalkmarks or lit candles to count the days leading up to Christmas.

Some state the tradition was originally started by the Swedish and Norwegians, and given the fact that many of them would be in darkness at this time of year, it is easy to understand why they would start the tradition.

The first known calendars in 1851 were handmade and wooden.

Gerhard Lang is behind adding small doors in the 1920's, and said to be the creator of the modern calendar, having mass-produced the cardboard calendars.

It wasn’t until the late 1950s that Advent Calendars included chocolate.

Now, though? You can get them with just about anything - Lego, makeup, Alcohol, beer, makeup, coffee, Hot Wheels, and SO much more!

What is in YOUR Advent Calendar this year?! 👇

***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

On this PINK FRIDAY dedicated to celebrating small and local businesses, encouraging you to support small retailers FIRST this holiday season, we thought we would take a little stroll down memory lane while learning a bit about how small businesses contribute to the Alberta economy.

Did you know Alberta has over 160,000 small businesses and boasts a significant number of self-employed individuals?!

Small businesses make up 95.4% of businesses in the province and employ a significant portion of our labour force. At 35.2 small businesses per 1,000 people, Alberta's number of small businesses per capita is strong compared to the Canadian average of 31.7. Alberta is the 3rd largest of all the provinces when looking at small businesses per capita. Small businesses per capita in the Red Deer region aligns closely with the provincial average of 36.8, with the Red Deer region average at 36.4.

We've been part of the small business landscape here in central Alberta for more than a decade, starting in the catering business, moving on to a restaurant first in Ponoka, moving that venture to Lacombe, taking on a Pizza Shop, opening a gift shop, getting into the market scene....it's been and continues to be a wild ride! But despite having to buckle up many times, it's the people and communities we serve that make it all worthwhile.

As you head out to shop this holiday season, try and keep that mantra in mind of supporting small retailers first. We have a healthy, small business driven economy here in central Alberta, but small businesses need your continued support more than ever before amongst the conveniences some of the major retailers are able to offer you.

***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

As some parts of the province are dealing with slick highways and a wintery blast, thought it might be interesting to look at some winter crash stats.

Did you know that about 30% of all motor vehicle collisions in Canada occur on snowy or icy roads and 1/3 of all collisions happen between November through February?

Single vehicle crashes are most common from October through December. Is that because that's how long it takes all of us to adjust to driving in winter driving conditions?! 🤔

Weather conditions are a factor in nearly 5% of all fatal accidents.

Insurance companies report a 49% increase in collision-related claims in December and January.

76% of Canadians use winter tires.

Take your time, get the winter tires, be prepared, and stay safe friends!

***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

Did you know in July of 1941, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) became the first branch of the Canadian Armed Forces to begin actively recruiting women? This led to the creation of the Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Force (CWAAF), which was later renamed to the Royal Canadian Air Force, Women’s Division (RCAF/WD).

Norva Hutton, from Bentley, was one of the many women who joined the RCAF/WD. Here is her story shared from the Bentley Museum:

Norva enlisted in the military on November 16, 1943. This was just seven days after her 20th birthday. Following basic training, Norva was assigned to the “Test and Development” unit of the RCAF in Rockcliffe, Ontario. Her job dealt with the ordering and obtaining of parts and equipment for military projects. Joining the military and moving to Ontario was quite an adventure for someone that had spent their entire life growing up on the family farm just east of Bentley. Norva enjoyed her service life - especially the access to organized sports. Her military friends couldn’t believe she had never played inside a gym. The old red schoolhouse in Bentley never had a gymnasium, so all sports were played outside.

Although Norva and her unit were safe in Rockcliffe, they did feel sadness for the tragic loss of many friends, school mates and relatives. Norva’s cousin, Vernon Miles, who was four years older than her, was also in the RCAF. Vernon was killed on January 28, 1944 while on a mission over Denmark.

Corporal Norva Hutton was discharged on December 17, 1946. After her discharge, Norva took a business course at a veteran’s school in Edmonton. She then went to the Yukon and worked for the military’s Highway Maintenance Branch. While working in the Yukon Norva met and married Joe Landry. Joe was a soldier and was stationed in the Yukon. At the time of their meeting Joe was driving the Alaskan Highway hauling supplies and equipment for the military.

Today, and all days, we acknowledge and thank the men and women who have served our Country.
