***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

As some parts of the province are dealing with slick highways and a wintery blast, thought it might be interesting to look at some winter crash stats.

Did you know that about 30% of all motor vehicle collisions in Canada occur on snowy or icy roads and 1/3 of all collisions happen between November through February?

Single vehicle crashes are most common from October through December. Is that because that's how long it takes all of us to adjust to driving in winter driving conditions?! 🤔

Weather conditions are a factor in nearly 5% of all fatal accidents.

Insurance companies report a 49% increase in collision-related claims in December and January.

76% of Canadians use winter tires.

Take your time, get the winter tires, be prepared, and stay safe friends!

***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

Did you know in July of 1941, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) became the first branch of the Canadian Armed Forces to begin actively recruiting women? This led to the creation of the Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Force (CWAAF), which was later renamed to the Royal Canadian Air Force, Women’s Division (RCAF/WD).

Norva Hutton, from Bentley, was one of the many women who joined the RCAF/WD. Here is her story shared from the Bentley Museum:

Norva enlisted in the military on November 16, 1943. This was just seven days after her 20th birthday. Following basic training, Norva was assigned to the “Test and Development” unit of the RCAF in Rockcliffe, Ontario. Her job dealt with the ordering and obtaining of parts and equipment for military projects. Joining the military and moving to Ontario was quite an adventure for someone that had spent their entire life growing up on the family farm just east of Bentley. Norva enjoyed her service life - especially the access to organized sports. Her military friends couldn’t believe she had never played inside a gym. The old red schoolhouse in Bentley never had a gymnasium, so all sports were played outside.

Although Norva and her unit were safe in Rockcliffe, they did feel sadness for the tragic loss of many friends, school mates and relatives. Norva’s cousin, Vernon Miles, who was four years older than her, was also in the RCAF. Vernon was killed on January 28, 1944 while on a mission over Denmark.

Corporal Norva Hutton was discharged on December 17, 1946. After her discharge, Norva took a business course at a veteran’s school in Edmonton. She then went to the Yukon and worked for the military’s Highway Maintenance Branch. While working in the Yukon Norva met and married Joe Landry. Joe was a soldier and was stationed in the Yukon. At the time of their meeting Joe was driving the Alaskan Highway hauling supplies and equipment for the military.

Today, and all days, we acknowledge and thank the men and women who have served our Country.

***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

Did you overindulge yesterday? Feeling the effects?

If the parent tax caught up with you, some gastreoenterologist and gut microbiome researchers say you should reach for some sauerkraut today! It can help replenish the good bacteria your gut needs to keep you healthy.

These researchers also rated Halloween treats for their nutritional value and effects on gut health. The best ones to reach for?! Sugar-coated nuts and fruits. The worst?! Chewy treats like Skittles, Starburst, and Twizzlers. Chocolate based treats are a more microbiome friendly option, especially dark chocolate, while chocolates with whole nuts are a healthier choice, with dark chocolate with nuts the best.

To restore gut health after Halloween, they recommend focusing on fiber, phytochemicals, unsaturated fats, and fermented foods. So whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, dark chocolate, berries, green tea, avocados, fatty fish, sauerkraut and yogurt, to name a few.

Now, if only there weren't bags of candy left to stare us in the face for the unforeseeable future!!

***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

With Lacombe set to host the Pan Continental Curling Championship next week, let's look at some Canadian curling history.

Did you know the first curling stones in Canada were made of iron?!

They weighed between 60 and 80 pounds and were shaped like tea kettles!

Today's curling stones are made of granite sourced exclusively from two locations, the Scottish island of Alisa Craig, and a quarry in Wales.

The Pan Continental Curling Championships are for men’s and women’s teams from World Curling’s Americas and Pacific-Asia zones and is used as a qualification event for the World Men’s and World Women’s championships.

The reigning women’s champions are Korea and the reigning men’s champions are Canada.

Best of luck to all of the teams and organizers, hopefully you have a chance to take in some of this world class curling action being held right here in Lacombe!

Did you know pumpkin spice has nothing to do with pumpkins?! 🤯

Pumpkin spice is actually the spice mix used for pumpkin pies.

It is made from ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground nutmeg, ground allspice and ground cloves.

Yay or nay for you on the pumpkin spice?!

If you were going to treat yourself to a PS, which local coffee shop are you hitting up?! 👇

***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

Let's talk cold hockey rinks!

If you're a hockey parent, you've got a list of rinks where you put on an extra layer or two!

In 2018, the rink in Foxwarren, Manitoba, was named the Coldest Rink in North America! They say if it's -20 outside, it's -20 inside.

Foxwarren is a community of just 90 people, but a wintertime gathering place for the region.

That barn was originally opened in 1949, with a price tag of $30,000.

Despite the old, cold barn, it boasts playing a role in many NHLers starts, including Ron Low, Pat Falloon, Mark Wotton, Cody McLeod, and Dawson Barteaux.

Unfortunately, a storm producing high winds in late August tore a large strip off of the roof, causing significant damages.

If we were to run a coldest rink in the province contest, who would be in the running?! 👇

***FUN FACT FRIDAY***

As I start to see holiday catalogs arrive in the mail geared for kids, it always takes me back to the Sears Wish Book and the hours I spent circling my wishlist!

Did you know it was originally the Sears Christmas Book, which was first released in 1933! It was just 78 pages.

It was renamed the Sears Wish Book in 1968, having ballooned to 608 pages!

In 1992, it hit an all-time high of 834 pages of gift giving options for all ages, interests, and budgets.

During its final years, it dropped to 150 pages.

The publication ceased in 2011. Sears brought it back for one year in 2017.

It truly was a book of joy!
