Memories of The Jigger 🐟
For Evelyn Tilley – a former “Irving girl” and daughter of a long-serving Irving Oil employee – the Irving connections run deep in Clarenville, NL.
There, she grew up next to our Clarenville heating oil depot and service office, as her late father, Jack Moores, traversed the east coast of Newfoundland as an area retail supervisor for more than 30 years.
She also eventually had a summer job fuelling customers at what would become our Clarenville Big Stop – then known as The Jigger, which her father helped develop in 1971.
"I liked meeting the different people and learning about providing great customer service," says Evelyn, who recently retired as a social worker and still lives in Clarenville. "If you were an Irving girl, it meant something."
The history of our Clarenville Big Stop and its community is now part of a new mural inside the restaurant – similar to displays across our network of Big Stop locations, where we welcome Professional Drivers, travellers and the local community with a taste of home on the road.
"We have a lot of loyalty among our customers and our new mural demonstrates our commitment to our community," says Dean Madden, who operates the Clarenville and Goobies locations. "It's a bit of nostalgia for those who stop in."

Holding on to August 🌅
As we prepare to say goodbye to 127 summer students – our largest group to date – we were thrilled to surprise 10 randomly selected students with $1,000 bursaries at a summer celebration last week.
"My summer with Irving Oil has been incredible," says Sydney Power, a Brand Ambassador and member of our summer crew, who was one of the lucky bursary winners. "I learned from my peers, mentors and even from myself about how I can connect my interests with my work."

On this day, August 17, in 1984, we celebrated the grand opening of our first Big Stop, located in Aulds Cove, NS. The celebrations included a performance by country music legend Hank Snow, hot air balloon rides and festivities with the community. It would mark the start of the tradition of serving a taste of home on the road for Professional Drivers, locals and travellers across our region – with 22 Big Stop restaurants now serving customers throughout Eastern Canada and Maine.
"What I value most is the longstanding dedication of our employees," says Arnold Hurley, the current operator of our Aulds Cove Big Stop. "Our servers provide remarkable service. They feel worthy, recognized and seen – not just as a business, but as the backbone of our success."

Welcome to the Flyway 🐦
Next time you're travelling between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, be sure to visit our Aulac Big Stop – located close to the migratory route of sandpipers who stop at the Bay of Fundy on their journey from the Arctic to South America.
We named this restaurant the Flyway in honour of its location at the heart of an amazing recurring story. Every summer, hundreds of thousands of these shorebirds stop in this area as they feed on mud shrimp. The birds stay here for several weeks, many of them doubling in size, before they embark on their arduous, nonstop flight of 4,300 kilometres.
You can come visit our six-foot-tall sculptures by chainsaw carver Monty MacMillan just outside our Aulac Big Stop, or two smaller birds by carver Hugh Parks inside the restaurant.

For Alicia Omar, a Talent Acquisition summer student with our HR team and fourth-year Business student at the University of New Brunswick, her co-op term with Irving Oil has been full of development opportunities, providing new and exciting experiences to hone her skills.
“There can be so much learning done outside the classroom, especially when you have supportive mentors,” she says.
This summer, Alicia has been working directly with a mentor who has helped her understand new perspectives and to feel empowered to share her ideas.
Alicia, along with many of our students, recently participated in a hackathon – an event where students work together to streamline parts of our business. Presenting on a range of topics, Alicia and her team spoke on digitizing our supply chain using data-driven decision-making.
“One thing I will take away from this experience is improving my communications skills,” says Alicia. “I’ve gained the confidence to speak up in group projects and share my thoughts and opinions.”

these cherished dairy cow landmarks were originally situated just outside our former Sussex Bulk Plant along Highway 1? When our plant closed in 1997, the community rallied to save these beloved sculptures. Our Irving team answered the call, relocating them to their current home at our Four Corners retail location, near Sussex, NB.
Today, Daisy and Buttercup still stand tall, serving as a nostalgic welcome to travellers stopping to fuel up and capture a photo – creating lasting memories for families on their journey.

As the 2024 Paris Olympics begin, we're wishing the best of luck to track and field athlete Craig Thorne, son of our employee Brian Thorne and his wife Christina, of Quispamsis, NB. Craig will make his Olympic debut with the Athletics team in the 110 Metres Hurdles.

we have partnered with the New England Aquarium for 26 years to support efforts to protect the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale?
In addition to fieldwork including photo identification and health monitoring, our support has helped researchers from the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at NEAQ to expand their work to include the use of drones.
Earlier this spring in Cape Cod Bay, MA, researchers collected blow samples with drones for hormone analysis. The blow collection will continue into the summer in the Gulf of St. Lawrence where they will also collect photographic measurements with a drone. These new methods will expand existing health monitoring abilities in a minimally invasive way.

Today we honour the legacy of Arthur L. Irving, our former President and Chairman Emeritus, who was born on this day 94 years ago, in Saint John, NB.
He dedicated his life to our company, and we miss him greatly. He continues to inspire us, every day.
Bobby Breau remembers the days when our company’s founder, K.C. Irving, would come to shake the hands of Irving Oil employees each holiday season.
Bobby – who started working with our company as a stove oil helper on a truck at the age of 17 – has worked with our company for 53 years.
“There’s a lot of good memories,” says Bobby, who now drives a fuel truck based in Saint John, NB.
“I’m glad to be here. It’s an honour to continue serving our customers after all these years.”
