Because the dreaded time change takes place Sunday Nov 3...

Did you know that Daylight Savings Time Change can affect Wildlife?

Wild animals set their routine to sunlight... not to a clock. Some wildlife rise with the sun, and prepare to sleep when the sun sets. Humans, however, plan activities by the clock on the wall.

Twice a year, our level of activity changes, literally overnight, while the wildlife around us continues their regular 24-hour schedule.

CREPUSCULAR animals (those most active at dawn and dusk), are gearing up for the end of day dashing through the woods and across the roads looking for food just as we are heading home from work.

Opossums are both Nocturnal and Crepuscular. This is a dangerous time of the year for opossums. The juveniles are on their own for the first time. They wander, often aimlessly, looking for food and dash out into the road with little warning when they spot roadkill.

(This is a good time to remind you NOT to throw garbage/fruit/veggies/food out of your car window ... it could cost a wild animal its life.)

The white-tailed deer is an animal most affected by our clock change.

November is mating season for deer. November is also the start of hunting season in many states and the deer leave their resting place during sunrise and sunset to avoid hunters. Deer have become accustomed during warm months to darting across the road during the lightly trafficked hour of 7 p.m. When the human clock suddenly turns back to Standard Time, the deer find themselves crossing the road at the very height of our busiest travel time. That’s when the potential for catastrophic consequences is high.

November is when many animals are hit by cars .. especially at dusk. Daylight savings time pushes rush hour into dusk, when many animals, especially deer, opossums and raccoons, are most active ... and it is harder for drivers to see them.

PLEASE drive slowly and be alert. Give wildlife a "brake."

β—οΈπŸš¨ SCAM ALERT - "THE GRANDPARENT SCAM" πŸš¨β—οΈ

We have had recent reports of the β€œgrandparent scam” in our community and ask that residents be aware of these situations.

These scams are a type of telephone or online fraud where scammers target elderly individuals by pretending to be their grandchild or another relative in distress.

The following steps are normally taken:

Initial Contact: The scammer calls, texts, or sends an email to the elderly victim, and usually pretends to be a grandchild or other close family member. The scammer may actually know some information about the person they are calling to legitimize the scam.

Impersonation: The scammer starts the conversation by saying something like "Hi, Grandma" or "It's me, Grandpa" to start the conversation. They might claim they are in trouble, often using excuses like:

-They have been arrested.
-They were in a car accident.
-They are stranded in a foreign country.
-They need money for medical treatment or bail.

Urgency and Secrecy: The scammer emphasizes the urgency of the situation and often begs them not to tell anyone, especially their parents or other family members.

Money Transfer: The scammer then asks for money, either through wire transfers, prepaid gift cards, or other hard-to-trace payment methods. In some cases, they might ask for personal information or credit card details.

Emotional Manipulation: The scammer uses fear and guilt, making the victim believe that the grandchild is in immediate danger or facing severe consequences if help is not provided quickly.

Follow-up Scams: Sometimes, after the initial payment is made, the scammer will contact the victim again, claiming more money is needed due to additional complications.

Please alert elderly family members of this scam, to ensure they do not fall victim to it.
