Introducing Lagavulin ‘The Ink of Legends’, a standout from the Diageo Special Releases 2023. The Islay distillery’s distinctive smokiness is amplified by a finish in Don Julio Añejo Tequila casks. It was bottled at 56.4% ABV.

Tasting Notes.

Nose Padrón pepper, spent bonfire, stone fruit, white chocolate, and charred pineapple.

Palate Herbal smoke, stewed plums, orange peel, and oaky spices.

After six months in a first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry hogshead, this light, fruity Speyside single malt has acquired a gorgeous umber colour. Scents of toffee, baked figs, rich raisins. A quick hit of sherry sweetness on the palate. Lighter fruity notes follow. Coats the mouth and throat. Finishes in warm, smooth fashion.

Colour: Natural colour, umber.

Nose: Secents of toffee, baked figs, rich raisins.

Palate: Mouth coating. A quick hit of sherry sweetness followed by stewed raisins and lighter fruity notes, with subtle woody notes.

Finish: Warm, smooth, rich fruits.

The oldest age statement to be found in Diageo's Special Releases 2023 is from Lowland distillery Glenkinchie. This 27 Year Old expression, named ‘The Floral Treasure’, was aged in a mix of refill American and European oak barrels and butts and then bottled at 58.3% ABV.

Tasting Notes:

Nose Through elegant elderflower aromas comes cookie dough, peaches in syrup, and toasted almonds.

Palate A smattering of oak spice prickles through orchard fruit and citrus notes as well as a beautiful sweet vanilla element.

Finish Gracefully long and delicately floral.

From the Diageo Special Releases 2023 comes this Mortlach expression, ‘The Katana’s Edge’, a Speyside Scotch finished in Kanosuke Japanese whisky and Pinot Noir casks. It was bottled at 58% ABV and its intriguing cask profile is matched by its blend of sweet and savoury flavours.

Nose: There’s a very elegant tropical style fruitiness that adds contrast to the cured meat, clove, red chilli earthiness, and black pepper present.

Palate: Pear drops, toffee pudding, orange peel, marzipan, and plenty of soy sauce-style umami flavours.

Finish: Rich and full-bodied, with honey and pepper.

First, in the series, this one-time release whisky has all the hallmark notes of CC Classic 12 YO elevated to 15 years with the secondary aging in Oloroso sherry casks.

Nose: Rich aromas of toffee, spice and subtle sweetness.

Palate: Warm and creamy flavours with oaky hints.

Finish: Oaky spiciness follows through on the mid palate as the taste fades.
