Did you know the word "rakija" actually originated from "al-rak" which in Arabic means sweat? ๐ค Later in history, it translated into arak drink, which was produced in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Eastern countries where the first version of the recipe was spread. The Balkan region took the recipe and improved the spirit naming it "Rakija". This became their signature alcoholic beverage in the 15th century. The trend of producing national spirits followed in other countries: gin in England, schnapps in Germany, aquavit in Scandinavia, vodka in Russia and Poland.
