A major contributing factor to the production of rakija in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the diversity and availability of fruit at the river Drina. Nature is untouched and very often wild around and in the mountains.

Even though the country suffered greatly from the war in the 90s, the traditional, old craft of producing rakija has managed to long survive throughout time and it is still widely practised. This is why we look forward to sharing our spirits with you. ☺️

Did you know the word "rakija" actually originated from "al-rak" which in Arabic means sweat? 🤓 Later in history, it translated into arak drink, which was produced in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Eastern countries where the first version of the recipe was spread. The Balkan region took the recipe and improved the spirit naming it "Rakija". This became their signature alcoholic beverage in the 15th century. The trend of producing national spirits followed in other countries: gin in England, schnapps in Germany, aquavit in Scandinavia, vodka in Russia and Poland.

Did you know that rakija is deeply integrated into the culture of the Balkan area? 🤓 For example, back in the day when young men came to seek a girl's hand in her house, they would carry rakija with them. The custom was to bring as much as possible in case it ran out.

Once both parties agreed to the marriage, a celebration would begin that could not pass without a toast. After that, the bride's father would offer the "bride's rakija" to his son-in-law and his relatives as a present. 🥃🥃

Usually made from grapes left over from winemaking, or orchard fruits like plums or apricots, the body- and soul-warming drink is an inescapable part of the nation’s social glue. Rakija can be a sweet appetizer or used instead of dessert wine after a nice meal. But it can also feel like you’ve just swallowed fire. Naturally, the flavour you choose will define the aftertaste. 🥃
