It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my Father, Kevin. Kevin worked side by side with my Mum Shirley for over 25 years making Calders General Store what it is today. I am proud to continue that legacy.
Mum, a domestic engineer and Dad, a crane driver with the Waterboard, with no business experience, took a risk, purchasing a run down corner store. As a family we spent a weekend scrubbing floors and restocking shelves and the customers returned. Mum and Dad worked tirelessly for many years running an extremely successful business to give my brother and I opportunities in life that they never had.
My Dad, Kevin, spent his formative years in the Warrawong area, moving to Albion Park in the late 1970s. He saw many changes to Albion Park over the years! A lover of cars, in particular his love of FJ Holden’s, which I was able to help restore with him.
Leaving school at 14 years old he was never without employment, and it was one of these jobs that would ultimately give him industrial lung disease that would raise its head and take his life some 55 years later.
Dad was dedicated to Mum, Shirley. Married for 54 years, I will always remember, with pride, his dedication and devotion to Mum’s care over the past few years.
Dad enjoyed coffee, a sweet treat and driving adventures to different parts of Australia. A quiet man, as a family we will miss his moments of wisdom and witty comments.
As a family we are grateful that Dad’s passing was peaceful and express our deepest thanks to the palliative care nurses for their care in the past week.
The business has had many staff over the years but none more important than Brigitta, who started with Mum and Dad way back around the last century and continues with me to this day, also Nathalie, who has now been with me for the better part of a decade, two people who I have complete faith in and have been able to trust the business in their care to enable me to care for Mum and Dad in the past few months. I could not do it without them. Special mention to my family, Michelle and Poppy and especially my son Lincoln, who at 15 years of age, knows the business inside out and has run the store on the occasions that I have had to leave on short notice.
In memory of Kevin Calder 18/07/1949-11/05/2023.
