Our founder, Kevin Mitchell, has a long-standing passion for Old Vine Grenache. 🍇

Many of the Clare Valley’s Grenache vines were removed in the 80’s as part of a government-sponsored vine pull project, but Woodvale crafts their MCD Grenache using fruit from a surviving vineyard in Leasingham, planted in 1955.

Woodvale’s Spring Gardens Shiraz is named after Kevin’s Great Grandfather, Tom Duke’s family farm on Duke Road in Penwortham. Tom Duke was a local businessman and orchardist whose own father, Alfred Duke, had arrived in Penwortham in the early 1860’s.

Other than growing and drying currants, Spring Gardens farm was typically horticultural, the rich soils and abundant rainfall of the period allowing Tom to grow world-class citrus, pears, apples, blackberries, cherries and quince while developing a large beekeeping business that continued to thrive for decades.

It was an easy decision to name one of Woodvale’s finest Shiraz after that historic farming property.

Woodvale’s 2021 MCD Grenache is crafted from two old vine Grenache vineyards in the Clare Valley. 🍇

The Clare Valley, being slightly cooler than its neighbouring wine regions tends to produce Grenache wines that are more elegant and linear in structure, wines that are perfumed, and almost Pinot-like on the nose and have silky and seductive palates.

The MCD Grenache covers off on all those bases. Flavours of dark cherries, subtle smokiness, licorice, and tar. The gentle tannins and the time spent in older large oak casks providing the final polish and precision the wine reflects.

Vintage: one of our favourite times of the year when we watch the Maestro (Kevin) weave his magic. ✨

Overall, this vintage was full of highlights; from crisp zesty Rieslings, classic black-fruited Cabernets and perfumed Shiraz and Grenache, all built for either long-term cellaring, or savoured a little younger on a rainy day.

This unique site and the cool ripening conditions of the 2017 vintage has shaped the wines zesty lemon, creamy peach and melon flavour profile, perfectly balanced by its subtle French oak chariness.

Woodvale can be found right in the heart of the Skilly Valley, near the hamlet of Penwortham. As a fourth-generation grape grower and winemaker, Kevin, ably assisted by his father Mort, has looked for inspiration for his Woodvale brand through the creation of small, discreet batches of wine, in many cases focusing on single site or sub-regional blends. Whilst his Sharegarden range looks at the uniqueness of the Clare Valley more holistically.

Either way, his philosophy seeks to keep things simple; through minimal intervention, sustainability and attention to detail, to let the fruit do most of the talking. 🍇

Wines of unique distinction

Nestled deep in the Skilly Valley of Australia’s renowned Clare wine region, you’ll find Woodvale Vintners. Here wines are crafted with care and skill – shaped by their terroir, influenced by their heritage, and embraced in the vision of their maker, Kevin Mitchell.

In 2004, after decades carving out a reputation within Australia’s wine scene for his ingenuity, skill and passion for creating wines of genuine character, Kevin Mitchell – Clare Valley’s inaugural Winemaker of the Year – decided to step back from his executive role in the acclaimed Kilikanoon label, which he’d founded a number of years earlier.

His desire to get back to grass-roots and create boutique, limited release wines himself, led Kevin and his wife Kathleen Bourne to the village of Penwortham and, in particular, ‘Woodvale’, a beautiful, 7-acre holding he’d known and loved since he was a boy.

Drawing on his extensive background, including studies at Roseworthy, early apprenticeships in vineyards around the globe, and his own deep appreciation of how to harness the very best of the Clare Valley terroir, he and Kathleen set about planting the new Woodvale vineyards in 2006 with Pinot Gris and Riesling.
