WINERY OF THE WEEK - SARDEGNA

This months we received 3 new wines from Sardinia from a small family in north west of the island. Chessa wines are the best expression of the terroir in the corner of Sardinia where the famous and indigenous varieties are planted like their Cagnulari.
All wine are available to buy in our shop.
2021 Chessa, Mattariga, Vermentino di Sardegna DOC $55
Mattariga is a Vermentino di Sardegna DOC obtained from 100% Vermentino grapes cultivated on calcareous soil, on hills at 250 m asl, with good temperature excursion, which helps to preserve aroma. Low yields per hectare and careful winemaking produce good concentration. It has a fine and delicate scent, and a well-balanced and intense taste.

2019 Chessa, Gemmanera, Cannonau di Sardegna DOC $60
Territorial interpretation of the cannonau which finds its origin in clayey limestone soils rich in skeleton. I live the ruby red color, fresh and fruity aromas reminiscent of morello cherry and blackberry enriched with precious notes of Mediterranean scrub. Vibrant entry in the mouth characterized by a fresh acidity and good volume.

2021 Chessa, Cagnulari IGT $60
It is a red wine made from Cagnulari grapes. Intense ruby red with violet shades. Intense aromas of red fruit, to***co and spices. Rich and enveloping to taste, always a spouse of traditional Sardinian cuisine.

BOBAR - YARRA VALLEY

Tom and Sally Belford met while studying viticulture in the late ‘90s. While arts students down at the pub may have been name-dropping Sartre, Tom and Sally Belford were bonding over the idea of making wine without the intensive energy inputs and additions that had become the norm in wine production. In 2010 they started Bobar, to get away from “all the bullsh*t” that came with making wine in their part of the Yarra Valley.
Today all their wines are made sustainably – they are not heated or cooled at any stage, nor are they fined or filtered. With the exception of minimal sulphur at bottling, all wines are made without additions

ALTO PIEMONTE - NEBBIOLO
In it’s simplicity it is an explosion of Alpine freshness. This Nebbiolo from the terraced vineyard in the province of Sondrio is a medium bodied red with soft tanning , elegant and long finish.

WINE OF CENTRAL ITALY
Cesanese is one of the oldest varieties in Italy, manly planted in Lazio (Rome), is a medium body red wine with lots of characters perfect in winter with slow cooked food. Available in our store and in our wine tasting today from 5pm. Come and discuss with Fabio the other wines from the other regions around the central of Italy.

DOMAINE LAURA LARDY

Laura’s first vintage was in 2017, but as a 4th generation winemaker she was born with it in her blood. After taking over a small group of plots totalling 5.5ha from the family farm she converted to organics - “I knew that if i was to make wine, it would have to be this way, no matter how hard it is in the beginning.”
Mostly old vines - her youngest vineyard is 40 years old - her wines are perfumed, fresh, and very easy to drink. Semi-carbonic maceration of whole grapes in concrete, then pressed to either old barrels or foudres for elevage. These are beautiful wines from excellent terroirs farmed with care and deserve a place in any wine programme.
