Eleni and Edouard Vocoret really are among the brightest talents that exist in Chablis today. Every year our team eagerly awaits the new shipment from Chez Vocoret, as it usually means the bar is set even higher than the always outstanding preceding vintage.

The 2022 growing season in Chablis saw a welcome return of drier conditions with no disease pressure, resulting in wines that are overall clasically-styled. As Neal Martin points out ‘these are often very nuanced Chablis, whose virtues are not immediately apparent. I often find you have to sit with them and watch them as they unfold in the glass. Their ‘Bas de Chapelot’ is a knockout this vintage’.

Spanish Wine Nights

Over two sold out nights last week store manager Graham led guests through the diversity of wine available from this most fascinating of countries.

From the extraordinary Bimbache, an incredibly complex white crafted on El Hierro, the most remote of the Canary Islands, to the genre-redefining mountain Grenache of Madrid's Comando G, there were new discoveries made and favorites decided upon.

In the end, it was the wine so traditional that it has almost become a novelty which seemed to catch the most hearts.
The 2011 Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia, a Rioja released at 12 years of age, and a wine whose making has changed little since the winery's founding in 1877 showed Rioja in an entirely new light for everyone involved.

A pair of fabulous nights, filled with fantastic wines and guests.

Saturday Tasting - The Warmth of the Rhone - 2-5pm

Come in this afternoon and taste three exceptional wines from the Rhone Valley in Southern France. Today we'll be tasting the newly released 2021 Inopia's from Clos Saouma. These extraordinary wines, sourced from the town of Orange in Chateauneuf country match Rhone richness with the finesse of a producer who made his reputation making some of Burgundy's finest wines.

In addition we'll be trying the organically-grown Syrah from Clos de la Bonnette, a riot of ripe red fruit and white pepper, sourced a stone's throw (literally) from Cote Rotie.

Established in 1959 by patriarch and namesake Bernard Defaix, this domaine – as illustrated by Allen Meadows – has quietly risen to be one of the top vignerons in Chablis. Operated today by Bernard’s two sons Sylvain and Didier, along with Didiers wife Hélène, Domaine Bernard Defiax has become synonymous with the premier cru Côte de Léchet, a wonderful crystalline wine of great intensity. Along with their great quality, all the wines in the Defaix portfolio are well known for their modest pricing and exceptional value compared to their peers.

SATURDAY TASTING: The Heroic Soaves of Le Battistelle

Clearly one of Soave Classico’s best producers, Le Battistelle hand-tend steep terraced vineyards featuring vines that are up to 130 years old. The take the care of their volcanic terroir so seriously that they have been certified 'Viticoltura Eroica' for the 'heroic' viticulture used for the production of their vines. All of their cuvees are made from 100% Garganega (ugly name, beautiful wine), the hero grape of the Soave region.

The Wines of Domaine Thierry Mortet "...there is no doubting either their finesse or persistence"

It's exciting to be able to offer this exclusive parcel of wine from Domaine Thierry Mortet, brother of Denis Mortet. Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, this is still very much a domaine (unusually for this village and Burgundy in general) that remains under the radar.

While the wines are regularly praised by the French wine press for their purity, elegance and comparatively excellent value compared to their peers, perhaps the lack of fancy appellations or a significant Grand Cru in the portfolio means that the wines remain in the shadows and the pricing remains very modest.

Burgundy is knee-deep in a golden age of quality and popularity. Wines that were drunk regularly by enthusiasts not that long ago are now collectables, reserved only for the very well heeled. For long time lovers of the region and its wines happily all is not lost!

The surge in interest and demand for the finest wines has in turn had a flow on effect for many smaller vignerons and those especially that source and craft their wines in the outer-lying, less well known villages. We have hand selected a range of these to show that although the apex of the burgundy pyramid may be unobtainable to most of us today, there are still utterly superb, complex and affordable wines if you know where to look.

Join us for an amazing masterclass! Feel like you have a handle on German wines? Think again! Join Graham and Nevada Jones from importer Cellarhand Wine Company for an evening of German delights, both familiar and not.

Cellarhand, who turned 25 this year, were responsible for putting the spotlight on the famed vineyards and wineries of Germany by bringing the likes of Dr Loosen, Dönnhoff, Wittmann, etc into the country. We will deep dive into some famous producers and explore some lesser known German wine styles such as Spatburgunder, Weisser Burgunder and even a little Sparkling from the Loose Doctor! But of course, there will also be riesling.

THE WONDERS OF THE NORTHERN RHONE

A recent flick through the Rhone section of our well-thumbed copy of Raj Parr's 'Sommelier's Atlas of Taste' reminded us of just how wonderful these wines can be.

Here at Le Pont we are lucky enough to have many of Raj's favourite producers available instore.

From Jean-Louis Chave's Hermitage "for Hermitage, nothing else comes close", to the Rosine Syrah from Stephane Ogier, a maker Raj calls "the most ambitious young producer in Cote-Rotie" to the floral low-sulfur wines of Herve Souhaut, we have all you need for an exploration of the birthplace of Syrah.
