The first stage of the Kurri Kurri Speedway Club EmpowerRide project was to identify and prioritise the top 5 barriers for women and girls’ active participation in motorcycling especially in speedway and flat track motorcycle activity.
This was done in the form of a survey conducted on the Club’s page. The responses received were from a good cross-section of gender and age demographics.
The top 5 barriers from the survey in order of priority are:
1. Lack of media coverage on women’s and girls’ motorcycling activity
2. Women and girls don’t have the opportunities, support, or access to mentors and role models that men and boys do.
3. Gender stereotyping and traditional perceptions of sport
4. Costs (e.g. clothing, equipment, memberships, travel, courses)
5. Male-dominated environments in motorcycling activity
The Club now has meaningful and purposeful data on which to set about reaching the objectives of the EmpowerRide project which is funded by the Australian Government Play Our Way program.
The Club is required to meet the criteria of the funding agreement and has planned a range of activities for 2025 including:
• Purchase of equipment that is fit for purpose and female-specific to ensure they feel safe and valued
• Come and try days where equipment will be available for use and mentors will be on hand to assist new women and girls in motorsport
• Recreation ride days
• Education sessions to increase skills in riding for recreation, riding for competition, preparing and maintaining a motorcycle, fitness and well-being
• Assistance to attend Motorcycling NSW and Motorcycling Australia courses for officials and coaches to begin and/or develop levels of attainment
• Educate club executive and patrons on how to support women and girls in sport and how to eliminate bias, discrimination and harassment
• Deliver female-only events for new women and girls in motorsport
• Promote EmpowerRide through local schools, local clubs, social media, LGBTIQA+ community to ensure that a diverse group of women and girls can join the program
