New Zealand experience of Rostov Sommeliers.
On the 6th of May 2013 a meeting of Rostov sommelier union took place at the restaurant Pierce on the river Don. Such meeting could be called regular when young but well experienced specialists of the wine market gather to evaluate wines and other noble drinks in one of Rostov restaurants. The tasting is to compare drinks according to a chosen subject.
The first Monday of May was dedicated to an expert evaluation of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, Martinborough and Hawkes Bay regions. There were 15 samples from different importers of Russia of price level not higher that 1500 rubles (50$). The sommeliers used a 5-points evaluation system. Below we present the wines, getting the highest rate from Alexey Skidan leading expert of East European Sommeliers and Experts Association:
1. Villa Maria Cellar Selection, 2009 Marlborough – 4,5. Aroma has vegetables notes, sweet pepper, a bit creamy. The taste is strong and oily, with a long aftertaste. A remarkable mineral wine.
2. Saint Clair, 2011 Marlborough – 4,4. The nose is intensive with white flowers, tropical fruit, citrus and apples. The taste is bright and intensive, peach notes and citrus. Aftertaste is long.
3. Metis Pascal Jolivet & Trinity, 2009 Hawkes Bay – 4,4. There is a significant tone of vanilla, red currant, pepper notes, slight creamy, a very complex aroma. There exotic fruit in the taste, the acidity is well integrated, a full-bodied wine with a good aftertaste.
4. Dog Point Section 94, 2010, Marlborough – 4.8. A complex aroma with strong oak tone, smoky and mushrooms nuances. A bright taste, the acidity is well balanced, there vegetable notes like tomato and pepper. Aftertaste is very long.
