The property covers a total of 71 hectares of which 38 hectares falls under vineyard. Situated 7km from the False Bay coast between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, a breach in the coastal ridge channels the south and south west winds towards the vineyards and these being generally cool breezes helps moderate the summer temperatures.
The site, which was originally a mix of to***co and bush wines up until the early 80’s was systematically planted to vineyard, each vineyard was selected to what was considered the best cultivar match for the terroir. The total planned vineyard will be 45 hectares. As of 2009 the vineyard comprises of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and a sprinkle of Viognier.

Vineyards grow on West- and East-facing slopes on both sides of a valley that winds its way in a North-South direction and are planted in Tafelberg sandstone soils at an altitude of 650m to 700m. The altitude, which has a tremendous impact on the cool down effect during hot summer days, coupled with the sandy loam soils, not only give our wines a sense of perfume and minerality, but also allow the grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavours. This ultimately results in the creation of wines with predominantly fresh fruit and berry flavours.

This beautiful farm on the east-facing slopes of the magnificent Constantiaberg and barely 12km from False Bay, originally formed part of the Constantia Estate, which was founded by Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the new Dutch colony at the tip of Africa.
First sold as a 200 morgen sub-division to Cornelis Brink in 1773, Buitenverwachting changed hands all too often. And yet it flourished as a wine farm, due mainly to the 90 000 vines planted in 1825 by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete, brother of the famous Hendrik Cloete of Constantia.
