The Spirit of Alba Festival’s aims are to bring Spirit back to Kirkintilloch and reinvigorate local Japanese ties. Kirkintilloch and East Dunbartonshire has a proud distilling past:-
Gallowhill (Gadloch) James McFarlane and Elizabeth Harvie 1798-99
Tambowie distillery (Milngavie East Dunbartonshire) Alexander Graham 1825-1860 the distillery went through a few changes of ownership before the Tambowie Distillery co. took control in 1910 and a fire in 1914 destroyed much of the distillery. The distillery finally closed in 1920 and the distillery was cannibalised to provide material for a road nearby.

Ownership changed in 1897 to the Bellefield Distillery co.
Holm Distillery Founded 1828-1840 David Findlay John Matthias Kopper went bankrupt closed 1848

The Father of Japanese whisky Masataka Taketsuru lived in Kirkintilloch and married a local lady Rita Cowan after taking up lodgings at her family home in the winter of 1918. Masataka studied organic chemistry at Glasgow University studying under Thomas Stewart Patterson the Gardiner Chair of Chemistry.
In April 1919, Taketsuru began his apprenticeship at Longmorn Distillery in Speyside (Strathspey), and in July 1919 at James Calder & Co.'s Bo'ness distillery in the Lowlands region which is now closed. On 8 January 1920, he married Jessie Roberta "Rita" Cowan of Middlecroft in Kirkintilloch despite opposition from both families. Rita and Masataka intially lived in Campbeltown and his last apprenticeship began in May 1920 at Hazelburn distillery (Purchased by Mackie and co 1920 owners of Springbank). Rita and Masataka m
