Hey, it’s Melissa again. I wanted to be sure our former customers knew Doug’s brother, Joel, died unexpectedly from a heart attack yesterday, the 13th. So many were with our family from the beginning. In late 2006, it was all hands on deck, pushing to get the new building’s interior completed to open in March 2007. Joel, friend Rob, my brother, Doug’s siblings and all four of our kids worked crazy hours on everything from cabinet fabrication, laying tile, painting - you name it. It got done with a big savings from everyone pitching in! Here’s a look back…
We will miss Joel’s straightforward attitude, humor, fierce family loyalty and helpful spirit. It’s heartbreaking to lose him!

Hey! It’s Melissa
So many of our MUGS customers have reached out and yes, the news is true. Reverend Don Gordon, my dad, who so many of you knew from his years of volunteering to do odd jobs around the store, died on November 5th. He was an amazing human who is missed already! His obituary was in the Sunday Grand Rapids Press if you would like details. ❤️

Meet Carla, a chicken who wandered into our lives a few months ago. She looked like she had escaped from a fight, was timid and had no tail feathers. All summer, Doug has been out back of the strip mall 7 days a week working on catering trailers. So Carla soon knew the sound of Doug’s truck and would run out of the woods to greet him every morning. Bartenders found Carla roosting on the wheel well of the trailers or in the garbage can that Doug filled with bags creating a cozy nest. He researched the best food for her and fed her daily…actually spoiled her with strawberries and ice. Carla came when called and eventually ate feed out of Doug’s hand. She let one of our (brave) grandsons hold her. Carla grew back her feathers, gained weight and became something of Mugs mascot. Insert scary music
18 hours after this post, Carla was, we assume, birdnapped… just 3 hours before we were taking Carla to her forever home where she would have continued to live a safe and loved life. We are saddened by this turn of events and hope whomever has her does right by her. Carla is an awesome chicken who provided Doug (and many others who work at the strip mall businesses) hours of fun and laughs! 🐓❤️ Melissa
