Telling the bees is a Western European tradition in which bees are told of important events, including deaths, births, marriages and departures and returns in the keeper's household. If the custom was omitted or forgotten and the bees were not "put into mourning" then it was believed a penalty would be paid, such as the bees leaving their hive, stopping the production of honey or dying.

The custom of "telling the bees" is a charming and ancient tradition where beekeepers inform their bees about significant events in their lives, such as deaths, births, marriages, and other major occurrences. This practice is believed to have its roots in Celtic mythology, where bees were seen as messengers between the human world and the spirit world. The presence of a bee after a death was thought to signify the soul leaving the body. The tradition became particularly prominent in the 18th and 19th centuries in Western Europe and the United States.
To tell the bees, the head of the household or the "goodwife" would approach the hives, gently knock to get the bees' attention, and then softly murmur the news in a solemn tone. This ritual was believed to keep the bees informed and prevent them from leaving the hive or dying. The custom underscores the deep connection and respect that people historically had for bees, viewing them as integral members of the household and community.

Here's a good solution to treat for Varroa Mites if you're using the HiveIQ Bee hive which is polystyrene. I'm using the Mite-e-Vape oxalic acid vaporizer which heats up and would melt the bottom board. I drilled a hole through the underside of the bottomboard and ran a bamboo straw. It fits snug and insulates much of the heat coming off the wand.

This is Japanese Knotweed just starting to bloom which is pretty early.

Our Darkest Honey is Knotweed which is an invasive plant you'll see around the state and beyond that is really tough to eradicate. It provides a great nectar source for honey bees and other pollinators when there is a dearth of other nectar not available.

For a dark honey it's quite mild but you can definitely taste notes of caramel and plum.

Varroa Mites are a constant threat to our bees. Every year I treat my hives multiple times with oxalic acid which is less harsh if a chemical and it does the trick in controlling mite populations.

For yours have been losing my colonies to and over to abundance of mites going into winter. This year all of mine look healthy.

Hi Neighbors,

It's your neighborhood beekeeper checking in. I just finished harvesting about 100 lbs of Knotweed Honey in addition to seasonal blackberry/wildflower honey.

If you've never had knotweed honey, you're in for a treat. It's rich, dark, sweet and multi with notes of fig and toffee.

All of our honey is raw/unheated and only strained of wax before going into the jar. All those good benefits of honey are naturally preserved.

Try some of our delicious honey spooned over a good piece of cheese or try making a batch of fermented garlic honey to help your immune system.

Local pickup at our house by Prichard Beach. Cash or Venmo. bradleyhole at gmail.com or Venmo is -hole

Knotweed is an invasive bamboo looking plant found all over Seattle. It's root structure can span four feet underground. Like it or not, the bees love pulling nectar off the small white flowers - especially now when the blackberry nectar has all but ended.

It produces a dark honey that resembles motor oil in color but has an amazing smooth taste with notes of plum.
