Last year, the Schwarzenegger Institute teamed up with renowned single malt bottler Alexander Murray & Co to create a special edition Scotch whisky called “MacSchwarzenegger,” as part of an effort to raise funds for Arnold’s public policy institute at the University of Southern California and other philanthropic endeavors.

After the Eaton fire ravaged through Altadena, the Schwarzenegger Institute reached out to Mission to help donate the proceeds of MacSchwarzenegger directly to Eaton fire victims. We couldn’t be more excited about the partnership!

Those already aware of Arnold’s nickname - “the Austrian Oak” - will immediately understand the concept behind MacSchwarzenegger. Using custom-crafted Austrian oak barrels from the prestigious Mittelberger cooperage, Alexander Murray & Co sourced a Speyside single malt whisky (right at 10 years of age) and finished it inside of Arnold’s personalized casks, adding an entirely new twist to the classic Scottish profile. After four months in new Austrian oak, the Speyside malt took on an entirely new character with notes of marzipan, cedar, and candied nuts.

Bottled at 47% ABV, the result is a unique single malt whisky that pays homage to the Austrian oak—both literally and figuratively! Round and supple on the palate, the creaminess of the whisky is what first grabs the attention. The Austrian oak influence hits immediately after, painting the palate with exotic wood notes that are seamlessly integrated into the inherent maltiness of the whisky.

The base flavor of sweet vanilla imparted from the original casks serves as a canvas for the Austrian oak to manipulate, as it shapes the standard Scotch profile into a more chiseled and assertive finish of oak tannins covered in confectioners sugar. Ultimately, it’s a fascinating whisky that leaves you curious and longing for another sip!

There are fewer than 800 total bottles of MacSchwarzenegger - Edition 01 - Speyside Single Malt Whisky available. All profits will be donated to the Pasadena Educational Fund for Eaton fire victims, helping local families in need.

It's taken us a few weeks to pick up the pieces here at Mission. We've been checking in on our colleagues, friends, family members, and many of our own homes, scrambling to keep our doors open for the Altadena customers who depend on our business.

This week, however, we're beginning a series of different charity drives to raise money for the rebuilding of Altadena, beginning today with our new 'Altadena Strong' T-shirts. 100% of all proceeds from the sale of these shirts goes to the Pasadena Educational Fund for Eaton fire victims to help local families in need, and 100% of what we give them goes directly to those who have been displaced.

Working alongside our recently updated logo's design firm, the Thirty O'Nine branding and merchandising agency, the 'Altadena Strong' shirt pays homage to our Washington Blvd storefront as it looked in the 1970s, with the mountains rising up behind it. Mission's vintage vertical sign has been a fixture of the neighborhood for many decades and served as the inspiration for the graphic.
