The iconic, ivy-covered Château Lascombes is one of the most recognizable structures in all of Margaux. One would never expect this picturesque and secluded estate to have one of the largest vineyards in the Médoc. The vineyard is an astounding 120 hectares primarily located in Margaux; with 10 hectares in the Haut-Médoc appellation. With a staff of 36, one can imagine the harvest period on such a vast estate would be difficult to manage. Because of their access to state-of-the-art technology and some of the most desirable plots in Margaux, the viticultural team of Château Lascombes produces wines that continue to impress and receive critical acclaim.

Château Lascombes earned its namesake after its owner, Antoine Chevalier de Lascombes in 1625. The estate was inherited from the Durfort de Duras family who also owned Château Durfort – later known as the famed Second Growth property, Château Durfort-Vivens. Château Lascombes was classified as a Second Growth estate in 1855, but its history really began when it was purchased almost a hundred years later.

Accurate selection of the grapes both in the field, during harvest, and upon arrival in the cellar on the sorting table. Soft crushing-destemming and introduction of the musts into the stainless steel tanks.
Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of around 26°/27°C (without the addition of any yeast). Maceration in this vintage was prolonged for about 13-15 days for the Cabernet Franc and 15-17 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Frequent pumping of oxygen and délestages repeated daily during primary fermentation resulted in musts of great elegance and marked acidity. Malolactic fermentation took place in steel vats starting in the first ten days of November and was completed at the end of the month, allowing the musts to be introduced into wood from the first ten days of December 2018.

Once malolactic fermentation was complete, the wine was placed in French oak barriques, and a small part in American oak, where it was aged for a period between the 20 and 25 months. The duration of the ageing is technically decided on the basis of the seasonal trend of the vintage. The 2018 vintage has been in barriques for 24 months.

The second growth of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the Réserve de la Comtesse, was created and sold for the first time in 1973. Second growths represent between 20 percent and 50 percent of the total production of the Chateau. From the same soil, the second growth benefits from the technology and reputation of the great wine. The archives kept at Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande mention the existence of a second wine as early as the 19th century.

Despite all of the surprises, fears and doubts, 2015 turned out to be a remarkable vintage. The growing cycle took place in perfect conditions up until some extremely dry weather in July, leading to worries over low yields. The rain and associated fungal diseases that we usually fear turned out to work for us from mid-July to mid-September, enabling the vine to reach optimum ripeness levels. The wines are distinctive and exceptionally precise yet also dense and restrained. They remind us of the extremely dense yet ethereal Bordeaux’s of the 1980s, with an excellent aging potential yet able to be enjoyed in their youth.

Colore is the highest expression of Bibi Graetz dream, from very old vineyards of Sangiovese. Poor soils mixed with sand and stone and high altitude create the perfect terroir for a wine that tells a lot about Tuscany and its ancient taste. Only the best few barrels of the whole production will become Colore.

Three new elements characterize the 2020 vintage. One is the climate. Our best vineyards have never expressed their self so well as in 2020. The new vineyard in Olmo, which brought an incredible freshness to the wines. It has a magic terroir at 420m high. The third element is the new winery in Fiesole in which we managed to work in more evolved and comfortable way. We have now all the tools we need for creating the Testamatta and Colore that we want. In 2020 the growing season was generally warm. After a mild winter, spring started with rains just before the flowering allowing the water supply of the plants. Summer came quickly with high temperatures and drought but fortunately cool nights brought refreshing breezes which helped to preserve both the grapes acidity and aromatic character. Some rainy days before the harvest allowed to reach the ripening of the grapes. The harvest started on September 24th and finished October 15th.

Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest properties in Bordeaux. The vineyard was first planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, the youngest son of a noble family from Bordeaux. The vineyard was run by the Bordeaux Archbishopry until the French Revolution. The estate can take pride in the production of wine in the same vineyards for over 7 centuries.

The Angélus style results from the combination of bold decisions on vine varieties and an outstanding terroir. The wine has been a labor of love by chief winemaker Michel Friou, a Chilean industry veteran and native Frenchman who joined the single-wine estate in 2007. For his 2017 vintage, Friou selected an elegant yet robust combination anchored by 65 percent cabernet sauvignon, which is softened with 23 percent carmenere (Chile’s emblematic grape), 5 percent cabernet franc, 5 percent petit verdot and 2 percent merlot. After barrel-aging the blend in new French oak for 19 months, the resulting vintage boasts a soft mouthfeel with fresh, ripe fruits, velvety tannins and notable depth.

The intensity and structure of Almaviva 2017 come as a particularly pleasant surprise given the hot and dry weather conditions during the growing season. Yet, the winemakers overcame the dramatically lower yields and an early harvest, taking place three weeks ahead of schedule. Even with the odds against them, Friou and his team produced yet another superb vintage that embodies the estate’s first-growth expertise from Bordeaux and exceptional New World terroir – the best of both worlds.

Although conditions in the first half of the year did not herald a great harvest, the record-breaking temperatures, low rainfall and relative drought that followed in the summer months rectified the situation. The grapes were small but outstandingly rich in sugar and tannins.

The advance in the vine cycle and the hot, dry summer meant that the harvest began in late August for the white grapes and early September for the red grapes.

At Château Mouton Rothschild, picking started with the Aile 'Argent parcels from 30 August to 5 September and continued with the red grapes from 10 September to 3 October.

The wines are intensely coloured and have excellent tannic structures. They are remarkably dense and smooth, with a rare concentration of aroma and flavour.
Yields were smaller because of the drought, but the vintage can already be reckoned one of the great success.

The wine has a purplish colour shading to carmine at the rim.
The ample and expressive nose reveals aromas of ripe raspberry, cherry and redcurrant, complemented with airing by notes of white pepper and liquorice.
The ample, full-bodied and rich attack is underpinned by substantial, grippy tannins, while the dense and smoothly textured mid-palate pleasingly combines vanilla flavours with a crisp and succulent fruitiness, leading into a full and generous finish.

Launched with the 1990 vintage in 1993, Bin 407 was developed in response to the increasing availability of high-quality cabernet sauvignon fruit. Inspired by Bin 707, Bin 407 offers varietal definition and approachability, yet still with structure and depth of flavour. Textbook cabernet sauvignon, the varietally expressive Bin 407 highlights the rewards of Penfolds multi-region, multivineyard blending, with a core of ripe fruit supported by sensitive use of French and American oak.

𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒
South Australia experienced the second consecutive year of winter drought. Spring was cool and dry, conditions that continued well into November delaying flowering and fruit-set. With root-zone moisture levels well below average, irrigation was vital. Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Padthaway and the Barossa Valley experienced frosts in September that affected yields. The 2019 calendar year was the driest on record in the Barossa Valley. The beginning of December was marked by a state-wide heatwave. In all, the Barossa Valley had 26 summer days recorded over 35°C. Well managed irrigation was crucial to managing the summer heat stress. Conditions in January and February provided some welcome relief. McLaren Vale had above average rainfall in February, which ensured the vines were able to finish the remainder of the season in good shape. While bunch weights and berry numbers were generally low across the regions, the harvest produced some outstanding parcels of cabernet sauvignon.

The wine-growing year started with a virtually summery climate, the months of April and May being a lot hotter and drier than normal. The start-up and growth of the vines was, therefore, very quick and flowering was particularly early. Following that, the months of June, July and August were rather cool, but not wet enough, especially at Margaux, to really change the drought status of the vineyard, a characteristic of the vintage. The 26th and 27th of June were hotter than we had ever seen: numerous bunches of grapes, ready to ripen, taking into account the precocity of the vintage, were subjected to intense heat which caused some damage, particularly in the not very vigorous cabernet sauvignon parcels. The dryness of the vineyard after three months of drought probably amplified this phenomenon, of which the consequences remain generally limited. The harvest, which started on the 25th August for the whites, and the 5th September for the reds, benefited from generally hot and dry weather, which allowed plenty of time for the various sorting operations made necessary by the problems of intense heat. Our only disappointment is the quantity: with a yield of 29hl/ha, the 2011 vintage is the smallest harvest for 20 years!

The 2019 wines have good, strong colours, well-defined, fresh fruit, and a more moderate alcohol content than the previous vintage; their tannic structures reveal impressive elegance and depth. The volumes harvested enabled a very rigorous selection - around 55% - to produce a grand vin in the tradition of its predecessors.
Philippe Blanc, who celebrated his twenty-fifth vintage at Château Beychevelle this year, is very confident that 2019 will continue a high-quality series never previously encountered in Bordeaux and specifically at Château Beychevelle.

The vintage got off to a fine start with a mild and dry winter. The good weather continued through to the beginning of spring, leading to an early start to the growing cycle.
In April and May, the unusually cold and above all dry weather slowed down growth, and the head start was quickly lost. The first flowers appeared in our Pauillac vineyards on 28 May. This key stage of the cycle saw rather capricious weather, with rainy episodes in the second part of flowering leading to some poor fruit set
and uneven ripening.
June saw a change of direction after a rainy and cool start, with the onset of a heatwave in early summer such as we had not seen since 2003.
Fortunately, it was only short-lived and the vines quickly caught up, seeming better armed than in previous years to withstand this heat. Rain came miraculously on 26 July: 45 millimetres fell in Pauillac, perfect for triggering véraison. August temperatures then remained very moderate, without any peaks but with a few scattered showers, making us briefly fear the arrival of botrytis. But the drier weather at the end of the month, which continued until mid-September, allowed us to start the harvest under calm conditions.

𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞s
Attractive colour, dark and deep. The nose is characteristic of this vintage, ripe and fresh at the same time, with notes of blackcurrant and black fruit. The attack is straightforward on the palate, then the wine unfolds to express all its volume. The tannins are fine and precise. The high percentage of Cabernet, both Cabernet Sauvignon (68%) and Cabernet Franc (5%), provides a lot of tension all through the finish. It is a rich Carruades with very good ageing potential, which will certainly open within 6 to 8 years.

Selection of the grapes using a sorting table, soft pressing and gentle destemming of the grapes using suitable machinery so as not to break the integrity of the berries. Alcoholic fermentation (entirely spontaneous and without the addition of external yeasts) was completed in mid-October and took place regularly at a maximum temperature of 26-27 °C. The malolactic fermentations carried out in stainless steel vats were completed with regularity at the end of November thanks to the reduced external temperatures. In early December wine was placed in barrels from the first ten days of December 2019.

Once malolactic fermentation was complete, the wine was placed in French oak barriques, and a small part in American oak, where it was aged for a period between the 20 and 25 months. The duration of the ageing is technically decided on the basis of the seasonal trend of the vintage.

"The purity of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is exceptional here, with character and sensibility that’s reminiscent of some of the great Sassicaias from the 1980s, such as 1982 or 1988. But this is much more precise and clean. Aromas and flavors of currants and berries with cedar and earth. Sage and minty character, too. It’s full-bodied yet there’s so much polish and balance, together with structure, elegance, and refinement. Hard not to drink at this stage, yet give it time and respect. This will be a classic Sass and reminds me why I love this wine."
