There are countless outstanding whisky distilleries in the world, but one that truly stands out is Amrut Single Malt. Despite winning accolade after accolade, it remains somewhat under the radar — and that’s a good thing for those of us in the know!
Norfolk Wine and Spirits has a special connection with Amrut. In fact, we had the distinction of being the first store in the United States to bring in a single cask of Amrut — the unforgettable Amrut Norfolk Wine & Spirits Single Cask Single Malt (Cask #662), bottled at an impressive 60%. This outstanding whisky was an instant hit. Over the years, this partnership has grown into an incredible program featuring over seven different single casks of Amrut, each one unique and remarkable in its own right.

Raj Sabharwal is the Founding Partner of Glass Revolution Imports. In addition Raj is a WSET Level 3 Certified Spirits Educator, Advanced Whisky Ambassador Tutor and has participated in numerous Spirits judging and speaking engagements around the world. Raj was awarded Icon's of Whisky America's World Whisky Ambassador.
Raj was the first to import Single Malts from India, England, Australia and Czechia. Raj has been credited we being a leader in the World Single Malt category.

A Closer Look at Indian Whisky and Amrut
Six of the top 10 whiskies in the world are Indian, according to the Malt Whisky Yearbook.
India has 113 grain distilleries and an annual grain-based production capacity of 2.6 billion liters (as of 2021).
While there are roughly 30 distilleries producing single malts in India, Amrut leads the pack.
Launched in Scotland in 2004, Amrut established Indian single malts as world-class contenders. Much of its success can be credited to Ashok Chokalingam, who was named “Icon of Whisky” Ambassador of the Year in 2012 and 2016 by Whisky Magazine. With Ashok now serving as Master Distiller, Amrut continues to break boundaries.
Although Amrut may not have been the very first Indian distillery to produce single malts, it has undoubtedly done the most to create and elevate the Indian Single Malt category on the global stage. While other notable names like Paul John, Rampur, Solan, Indri, and Godawan have followed suit with impressive expressions, Amrut remains a pioneering force.
A World of Variety and Innovation
Few distilleries in the world can match the range and creativity that Amrut brings to its whisky-making. From experimenting with different cask finishes to blending malts from diverse origins, Amrut is a hotbed of innovation. They have consistently pushed the envelope, producing whiskies that are not only extraordinary but also groundbreaking in their techniques. Below are just a few examples of how Amrut has redefined whisky-making:
Amrut Spectrum: This one-of-a-kind whisky is matured in a unique cask made from four to five different types of wood (usually American Oak, French Oak, Spanish Oak, and Sherry casks). It’s the world’s first whisky matured in a "multi-wood" cask, a revolutionary concept in whisky-making. Each version of Spectrum offers a mesmerizing balance of flavors, with multiple layers of complexity from the different woods.
Amrut Naarangi: The first whisky in the world to be aged in casks seasoned with both sherry and orange peels. The seasoning process is an intricate three-year affair, which infuses the whisky with a subtle citrus note while maintaining the rich depth from the sherry. This bold innovation showcases Amrut's ability to think outside the box and deliver something completely unique to the whisky world.
Amrut Triparva: The first-ever triple-distilled Indian single malt. Traditionally, whisky from India and Scotland is double-distilled, but Amrut has broken convention with Triparva, offering a smoother and more refined spirit while retaining the distinctive Amrut signature flavors. This is a bold step into uncharted territory for Indian whiskies.
Amrut Fusion: A marriage of Indian and Scottish malts, matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. Fusion showcases the best of both worlds — the earthy, rich flavors of Indian barley and the smoky, peaty characteristics of Scottish barley. The result is a whisky that has garnered rave reviews worldwide for its balance, depth, and complexity.
Amrut Intermediate Sherry: This whisky bridges the gap between bourbon and sherry maturation. It is initially matured in bourbon casks before being transferred to sherry casks for a second aging period, and finally returned to bourbon casks to complete its maturation. The result is an extraordinarily complex whisky that offers a harmony of spice, fruit, and oak, making it one of the most sought-after releases.
Amrut Two Continents: A whisky aged across two continents — initially matured in India’s hot, tropical climate before being shipped to Europe for further aging. This dual maturation adds a unique dimension to the whisky, combining the intensity of Indian maturation with the slow, deliberate aging of a cooler European climate.
Amrut Peated Single Malts: In addition to their unpeated whiskies, Amrut has developed a superb range of peated single malts. The Amrut Peated Single Malt uses peat imported from Scotland, and is distilled and matured in India. The result is a smoky, yet tropical, whisky that’s entirely distinct from its Scottish counterparts. Amrut Peated in India takes this a step further, using Indian malt that is peated in India, creating a completely indigenous smoky profile.
Rum Innovations: Amrut has ventured into the world of rum with remarkable creativity. Their Two Indies Rum, a blend of rums from India and the West Indies, offers a rich, tropical flavor profile with a smooth, balanced finish. Unlike most rum producers who focus on a single style, Amrut has crafted an impressive range. From molasses-based rums to those made from jaggery (unrefined cane sugar), and even an agricole-style rum distilled from fresh sugarcane juice, Amrut demonstrates its expertise in creating diverse, high-quality rums. This variety offers rum lovers a chance to explore a wide spectrum of flavors, showcasing Amrut's innovative spirit.

Independent Bottlings: Beyond its renowned range of whiskies, Amrut has ventured into independent bottlings of Indian single malts, further showcasing the depth and diversity of Indian whisky craftsmanship. Their first release, Neidhal, was followed by Kurinji, with the highly anticipated Marudham on the horizon. These single malts, sourced from undisclosed distilleries across India and matured and finished at Amrut, highlight the brand's commitment to exploring and presenting the rich whisky landscapes of India.
The Single Malts of India series reflects the compelling variety and quality of Indian single malts, offering a glimpse into the unique characteristics of different regions, while maintaining Amrut’s signature excellence. This initiative underscores Amrut's dedication to pushing boundaries and elevating Indian whisky on the global stage.
In addition to its own whiskies, Amrut has expanded into independent bottlings of Indian single malts. Their first release, Neidhal, distilled in Tamil Nadu, and matured and finished at Amrut, represents their commitment to showcasing the diverse whisky landscapes of India. Following up on that success is the soon-to-be-released Kurinji, another landmark single malt sourced from mountainous regions.

The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States which sits next to the iconic Ellis Island, fittingly another gift has landed from France. This time the gift is in the form of some exquisitely curated Single Malt Scotch presented in beautiful bottles. Artist #11: A piece of art indeed.

This new kid on the Independent Whisky Bottler block, but this is no ordinary kid. This is Artist #11, Single Malt Scotches bottled by La Maison du Whisky- one of the premier whisky and spirits stores in the world. The tasting and presentation was hosted at the hallowed premises of Brandy Library. Along with incredible Single Malts Scotches, there was a cornucopia of fine spirits carefully curated from the world over, including Single Malts from France, Armagnacs and Cognacs, Rums from the Caribbean and far flung Australia, and so much more. There was also a unicorn whisky table, showcasing some previous gems which included a 25 years old Clynelish, 24 years old Bushmills, a sublime Ben Nevis, a Canadian Rye whiskey among others.

The labels of the Artist range of whiskies reflect the synergy between whisky and art. Each bottle features graphic interpretation by a talented artist, each Artist collection is created during the first semester of each year. For this series, the artist is Catherine Ludeau. So what does this look like- an amazing lineup of whiskies. All are bottled at Cask Strength, All are non-Chill filtered, all are bottled in their Natural Color in 700 ml bottles.

The problem: there is just not enough to go around. Alas quantities are limited, the entire bottling of 5 cases yielded less than 900 bottles

MACALLAN 1993 - AGED 27 YEARS, 46.8% Distilled in 1993 – Bottled in 202, Aged in Ex-Bourbon Cask Single Cask, 124 Bottles

BENRIACH 1997 - AGED 24 YEARS , 63.5% Distilled in 1997 – Bottled in 2021, Aged in Hogshead Single Cask, 188 Bottles

LAPHROAIG 2004 - AGED 16 YEARS 55.1% Distilled in 2004 – Bottled in 2021 Aged in Refill Hogshead, 293 Bottles

More on La Maison du Whisky
Founded in 1956, La Maison du Whisky is one of the leading independent specialists in the distribution of rare whiskies in France and overseas. Selecting spirits has been a fundamental part of La Maison du Whisky’s work, a relentless quest for rare casks that has driven our everyday activities. In 2011, our cask selection mission took on a new dimension when we decided to create our own range of independent bottlings: the ARTIST range was born. For the very first time in its history, a special ARTIST range has been developed exclusively for the American market, with 5 exclusive single cask Single Malt Scotch whiskies, bottled at cask strength in very limited quantities. Featuring some of Scotland's most revered and sought- after names, these casks represent the best whiskies our expert selection team has tasted over the last year.

About the Artist: Catherine Ludeau
Catherine Ludeau is a French artist born in Paris in 1956. Catherine works with tinted epoxy and resin, sometimes mixing in oil paint and acrylic. She plays with contrasts - gloss and matte, color and absence of color. The reflections in the resin that come to life when the viewer passes the canvas are an integral part of her compositions.

Catherine is inspired by Zen philosophy: balance, serenity, well being, clarity of mind.

“It is clear that my inspiration is first of all in nature, I need to give a metaphysical and spiritual dimension to my paintings.
What is beauty? It is simplicity, a simple thing said simply.”
ARTIST RANGE #11 showcases Catherine’s work: Fusion Métal No 3, 7, 9, 13, and 14.

Yesterday's Irish whiskey tasting brought forth the wide variety of Irish Whiskeys available. Many of the distilleries are young, and whether one likes it or not they are trying to and doing things differently to stand out. When that happens the Flavor profiles sometimes don't fall along the "Accepted" lines. The ratings sometimes can be harsh. Whiskey takes time to develop, but I think the palate also sometimes takes time to develop and mature.

It was quite a nice tasting as Allan Dwyer, President of Irish Whiskey Society of America joined us along with our very own Nick Nastassi to really take a look into the provenance and background of each of the bottles presented.
It is possible I might have missed a bottle of two.

Keeper's Heart is technically not an Irish whisky, it is sort of like High West's Campfire, but with Irish sensibilities. it is a blend of sourced MGP Rye, Irish Grain Whiskey and Irish Pot Still whiskey. Interesting and the man behind the blend is no stranger to making whiskey and creating blends. He is none other than Brian Nation, former Master Distiller for Irish Distillers — aka the group behind Jameson, Redbreast, Powers and Midleton whiskeys. I think this will be an exciting journey.

Brilliant Torabhaig, Mossburn independent Bottler and Caisteal Chamuis tasting last night. Thanks to all to braved the snowy weather and snarky traffic yesterday.
We had known that a little bit of sherry goes a long way- but never realized how dramatically. Yesterday this was a dramatic revelation.
Bruce Perry brought a cask sample bottle of Torabhaig, matured for ~44 months in an ex-bourbon barrel. This whisky or more accurately 2.5 barrels of the 44 month ex-bourbon was transferred to a FF Sherry cask. The sample bottle was drawn after 6 months of secondary maturating. We all sampled the Torabhaig Allt Gleann (which is ex-bourbon) , a light delicate flavorful and delicious whisky. To this we added using a pipette a drop or two of sherried Torabhaig. The transformation was dramatic...it seemed that at the 3+ drops level Torabhaig morphed into a generic Sherried whisky. Still tasty, but the Torabhaig DNA had been obliterated. Wow. This was quite a revelation for the folks participating in this experiment yesterday.
Thank you Bruce for this hands on behind the curtain look.

A fleeting visit by a dear friend Robin Robinson, a colorful personality and a delightful human being. Robin was visiting the area training the team at the Bully Boy Distillery. It was great to catch up in person albeit fleetingly, we will be plotting a tasting seminar with Robin soon. Perhaps even a delayed Robert Burns event, who knows- but there will be something in the near future.

Whether you are a novice or a connoisseur you must look into procuring The Complete Whiskey Course, Robin Robinson.

A must for any whisky library. Thoroughly researched, wonderfully illustrated with pictures and drawings, very well laid out and covers the entire spectrum of whisky layering in historical contexts of whisky development. Not a dull moment when reading this book. A must have.
