“A real surprise, great depth of flavour
A great whisky, with a slight sweet background. The aging of the whisky in the Pedro Ximenez barrels can be seen in the dark colour and the raisin back notes.”
Whisky Me Member Review of June’s dram
Peatheart is a great dram for this time of year, we’ve been enjoying ours alongside our classic British BBQ - and have been appreciating its warming qualities as it’s not exactly been scorching here!
A robust smoky flavour balanced with subtle sweetness, spice, and also a decent amount of light, fruity notes
The Lakes distillery site was formerly a collection of 160 year derelict farm buildings on the edge of the Bassenthwaite lake. Since its opening opening in 2011 it now employs over 70 people and has become a tourist attraction in its own right! It’s a must visit distillery
Peatheart showcases a heavily peated style, diverging from anCnoc’s typically light whiskies. Made from malted barley peated to 40 PPM (parts per million) it offers a robust smoky flavour balanced with subtle sweetness, spice, and also light, fruity notes
The seventh release of The Whiskymaker’s Reserve from the Lakes Distillery showcases a rich maturation process in ex-Pedro Ximenez and ex-oloroso sherry casks, along with ex-red wine casks. It’s this month’s Discovery dram and we think it’s superb!
anCnoc has become synonymous with a light whisky style, and this month’s expression is no exception. However what is unusual for this distillery is the use of peated malt. Just because a whisky is smoky it doesn’t mean it’s heavy (Ardbeg is another distillery that typifies light and smoky) and we think Peatheart nails the balance
Don’t tell anyone, but The Lakes Distillery in Cumbria has a solid claim for being our favourite English whisky distillery. This month’s Discovery dram is the Whiskymaker’s Reserve #7 and we get dried fruit sweetness, spicy oak and subtle hints of chocolate!
Not many of you will have heard of The Knock Dhu distillery, responsible for this months Traditional dram, the anCnoc Peatheart.
The distillery is located in the Highlands not far from Speyside and made the decision not to use their name on the bottle as it sounds too similar to Knockando (a Speyside distillery).
anCnoc has become synonymous with a light whisky style, and this month’s expression is no exception
This months live tasting features whiskies from anCnoc in the Scottish Highlands and The Lakes Distillery in Cumbria. Join as at the usual time, 8pm, for a conversation with both distilleries.
“Ginger, raisins and excellent in a Rob Roy cocktail” are Tristan’s tasting notes from this month for Wolfburn 10. What did you think of this month’s Scottish Single Malt?
In Rampur Asava expect to find tropical notes of lychee and kiwi, alongside floral elements, honey and to***co. This really is one of our favourite whisky producers in Asia. Let us know what you think!
A 10 year old release is a significant milestone for a new distillery, and since Wolfburn itself is only 11 years old we can be assured that this whisky contains some of the first spirit made here. A full maturation term in second-fill sherry casks has produced a delightfully fruity and elegant whisky
With a climate that can vary by 45 degrees celsius from season to season, maturation affect is a big deal in Utar Pradesh. For their Asava release, Rampur used Indian Cabernet Sauvignon casks to mature their whisky and the result is amazing
Wolfburn Distillery, located in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland, stands as the northernmost whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland.
It derives its name from the watercourse it uses, the Wolf Burn, which flows into the nearby North Sea.
This name carries historical weight, as it revives the legacy of the original Wolfburn Distillery founded in 1821, which was once a prominent local producer until its closure in the 1850s.
This month we are drinking Wolfburn 10 and Rampur Asava - join us for our usual live tasting along with Mark Westmorland from Wolfburn and Kunal Madan from Rampur
TONIGHT Join us for our monthly live tasting. We will begin the tasting with Wolfburn and then at around 8:20pm move onto Rampur. See you there! 🥃
Rampur really impressed us a couple of years ago with its Double Cask and we were intrigued to discover what else this distillery was up to. For this month’s Discovery dram we are featuring their Asava release, matured in Indian Cabernet Sauvignon casks - the result is amazing!
This month’s Traditional dram, Wolfburn 10, is matured for a full term in oloroso sherry casks. And since the distillery itself is only 11 years old we can be assured that the whisky is the some of the first to flow from the Wolfburn stills 🥃
Your Whisky Me drop is dropping! 📮🥃This month we're featuring the most northerly mainland distillery in Scotland 🏴and returning to an Indian whisky in the foothills of the Himalayas 🇮🇳
Wolfburn Whisky
Cù Bocàn Creation #5 features whisky matured in Colombian oak casks. Quercus humboldtii, commonly known as the Andean oak, Colombian oak or roble, is a species of oak found only in Colombia and Panamá.
It grows all over Colombian mountain ranges, and while it is a member of the oak family its leaves don’t resemble those of an English oak at all. This type of oak has - to the best of our knowledge - never been used to mature single malt whisky before!
A blend of malt and grain whiskeys, matured in ex-bourbon casks, sherry butts, and casks that previously held peated whiskey, Clan Colla 11 won its category at the World Whisky Awards last year. Soft, dark, fruits, chocolate & a wisp of peat smoke - we think this sets a new standard for Irish Whiskey 🥃
Although Cú Bocán Creation #5 is a NAS whisky, we can confirm that the spirit was distilled in 2011 and spent 10 years in ex-bourbon casks before a further year or so maturation in Andean oak casks for a total of 11 years 🥃
Established by Gareth and Michelle McAllister, Ahascragh Distillery is located in Galway, on the west coast of the Republic of Ireland. With a vision for sustainability, the couple has revitalised the historic Ahascragh Mill into a state-of-the-art distillery and visitor center, powered entirely by renewable energy sources, striving towards carbon neutrality ♻️🥃
This is the second whisky from Cù Bòcan - the experimental arm of the Tomatin distillery - that we have featured. Creation #5 Andean Oak combines the trademark hint of smoke with something we’ve not seen before: Andean oak casks from Colombia. The effect is a toasted quality combined with tropical fruit and herbs 🍌🌴🍍🥃
This month’s Discovery dram is from Ireland 🇮🇪 Clan Colla 11 Year Old is a blend of pot and grain whiskeys matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in a combination of peated and oloroso casks.
We think this is a cracking dram, but don’t just take our word for it! It has won gold in practically every competition it has appeared in, including the Tokyo Whisky Competition, Irish Whiskey Masters, and was the outright category winner at the World Whisky Awards last year 🥃🥇🏆

This is our second time featuring whisky under the Cù Bòcan label - that being the experimental branch of the Tomatin Distillery. The brand has added a few new expressions since October ‘22, including some new ‘Creation’ bottlings, which are fascinating explorations in cask types.
Creation #5, our April dram, features whisky matured in Colombian oak casks.
