Memories from The Big Apple Blossomtime a year ago.
🍎
This year's event was cancelled but you can create your own proxy experience by visiting https://www.bigapple.org.uk/blossomtime-2020/ to see how to buy some great local ciders. All the cider makers listed are people I know and I can recommend their authenticity! There are also some lovely pictures showcasing the emerging blossom from a range of different apple varietals.

Great to hear Simon Day of fame, current chairman of the Three Counties Cider and Perry Association trumpeting the cause of local cider with Andrew Easton on the radio this morning .

Words do not do this Dabinett - HMJ Pet Nat 2018 from justice, but our continual purring & rapturous groans of euphoria just might. Outstanding and available 🥂 Quantities are limited!

Enjoying roast lamb at this time of year is an ancient tradition. But why not set new standards by pairing it with a traditional cider like this beauty from ?
🍎
Light tannins, soft acidity, dry but easygoing, this is one of my all time favourite ciders because it is such a great alternative to a red burgundy. Tom Oliver has captured the spiritual terroir of Herefordshire Dabinett.

Travel definitely broadens the mind. But in lockdown, unable to leave town, we can unlock our imaginations and head for new culinary destinations.
🍎
It's not karei raisu, it's not massaman curry, it's not beef rendang. But it's a bit of all of these. Fragrant spices, coconut milk and just enough chili set us up perfectly for this luscious, fruity, yet bone dry pet nat cider from

Younger people may not remember the 'good old days' when we had this curious custom called 'social proximity'. We did strange things such as gathering in large groups like this cider share at CraftCon 2019 a year ago. How many famous cider makers can you spot?
🍎
As a general rule, what happens at CraftCon stays at CraftCon but I can reveal here that one the highlights for me was spending an evening becoming rather well acquainted with eleven girl perry from Bartestree. (Swipe right to see.)

Wow, what a difference a year makes! A year ago today we were just wrapping up Hong Kong's first ever cider festival, a week of cider events across the territory.
🍎
Now the whole world is in lockdown. But we still have our memories, we still have our dreams and there is still great cider to look forward to.

This 'Cidre Brut aux pommes de Savoie' is made with fruit grown in the lower valleys of the Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France.
🍎🍐
I don't have much information other than that it is a blend of apple and pear (100% juice). It has a cidery nose and is lovely and zingingly refreshing with a lot of the pear shining through. 2.5% abv.

I haven't kept track of all the perries I've sampled this year but there have been many and most have been good. One maker I keep coming back to is Bartestree Cider. Dave and Fiona have been winning awards for their cider and perry for almost 20 years and Dave, a Welshman, has done much to track down and identify perry varietals unique to Monmouthshire. Dave once told me he prefers sweeter cider and perry so he ferments using either keeving or cold racking to arrest the fermentation thereby preserving the natural sweetness from the juice. I've never had a perry from Bartestree that I didn't love so they are my top perry maker for 2019.
🍐
Pictured is their Oldfield single varietal from the 2018 harvest. Oldfield is sometimes called the queen of perry pears and is said to have originated in Gloucestershire hundreds of years ago. This Bartestree Oldfield is bottle conditioned, pale gold, medium sweet and has the softness I've come to love from Bartestree. Yum!

In a year of outstandingly good ciders it has been difficult for me to choose my #1 for 2019. But this Dabinett / Harry Masters Jersey from tops it for me.
🍎
It's a totally natural cider that captures the fruit and the Broome Farm terroir. Fruit pressed at the peak of ripeness, wild yeast ferment, pet nat* and importantly, absolutely yummy! 😋 Well done guys, you've set the bar even higher! 😅
🍏
PS It's no wonder they won the BBC's Food & Farming award for *Best Drinks* Producer 2019.
🏅
*Pétillant-naturel a.k.a. méthode ancestrale means the cider was bottled before primary fermentation had finished, without the addition of sugar (unlike champagne) so the sparkle is totally natural.

What a blast! The Three Counties Cider and Perry Association bar at the Ciderlands event in the Hereford Cider Museum this evening. 40 ciders and perries from 20 makers served by many of the makers themselves. Just a couple of days to the 30th annual Big Apple Harvestime event on 12-13 Oct. Come and see some guardians of traditional cider and perry making in and around Much Marcle, near Ledbury in Herefordshire.
🍎
I'm honoured to have been invited to conduct tutored tastings of cider and perry at three small producers. One of these is Lyne Down Organics 11am on Sun 13 Oct.
🍐
Big themes for Lyne Down are the sense of responsibility for the orchard they took over from the late Jean Nowell (a legend in the cider community) combined with their minimalist intervention approach. You may even get a chance to press some apples too! Don't miss it! More details of the whole weekend at www.BigApple.org.uk 🍏

If you are travelling by train via Birmingham to the cidery celebrations this month at and Harvestime, or if you ever have a little time to kill between trains at Birmingham New Street railway station, be sure to check out the Birmingham Stable. It's just five minutes walk from the station and sports a great selection of ciders and perries.
🍏🍎🍐
Passing through today, I particularly enjoyed the draft perry. Lightly chilled, zingingly refreshing and deceptively easygoing (5.8% abv).

L👀K at this cider pairing menu! In two weeks Herefordshire is hosting visitors from all over the world for the first meet up of the International Ciderlands. This top notch cider banquet in Hereford is the flagship event designed to showcase some of the finest ciders from this region.
🍎
For my Hong Kong 🇭🇰 cider friends who can't attend, don't despair because ciders from FIVE of the makers featured in the banquet are available in Hong Kong via my online store CIDER.COM.HK (clickable link in my bio).
🍐
Do you know which five of these makers' ciders are in Hong Kong? If you know the answer you can show off by telling us all in the comments 😆🍾🥂
